The Logical Failure of Rank-Based Matchmaking in Low-Population Environments

The current implementation of Rank-Based Matchmaking (RBMM) at Silver I (4,100+ points) suffers from a fundamental logical flaw: Strict rank-parity requirements are mathematically incompatible with a declining player population. By forcing the matchmaker to find six players within a narrow point 'bucket' during a period where a significant portion of the PvP population is diverted to Trials of Osiris or other titles (like Marathon), you have created a system that prioritizes 'rank integrity' over 'gameplay availability.' The logical contradiction is this: A competitive ladder cannot function if the players cannot find matches to climb. If I am stuck in orbit for 15 minutes because the system refuses to match me with adjacent ranks (Bronze or Gold), the 'rank' itself becomes a meaningless number derived from a dead playlist rather than a reflection of skill. Recommendation: Implement a dynamic 'search expansion' logic. If a match isn't found within 120 seconds, the rank-delta should automatically widen. A 'slightly' unbalanced match is logically superior to no match at all.

I've already been suggesting this is a major issue, and the ONLY solution, albeit wildly unpopular amongst casuals of PVP (myself being one), is to completely reduce the PVP playlist to just TWO gamemodes per day! 6v6 Control 3v3 Elim Nothing else. Force the entire PVP population into these two gamemodes. Would help queue times, SBMMR and give a far more competitive experience for everyone left. This would be the ideal rotation IMO- Week 1- Competitive 3v3 Elim; Casual 6v6 Control Week 2- Casual 3v3 Elim (weekdays); Casual 6v6 Control; Trials on the Weekend Week 3- Casual 3v3 Elim; Iron Banner Control Week 4. Competitive 3v3 Elim; Casual 6v6 Control; Trials on Weekend This would give Trials one major highlight per month (week 2), Iron Banner one major highlight per month (week 3) and then offer Comp 2 weeks in a row at a time (Week 1 & 4, so as the cycle resets, you get 2 in a row). While they could tweak the casual 6v6 modes weekly (or daily) and offer things like Rift, Mayhem or Supremacy, those modes would be far better served to exist in Week 2 alone. The playerbase needs strategic and skill based gamemodes moreso than casual cheesy nonsense. I'd rather see those modes disappear entirely, but a more realistic approach is to just work them into rotation daily/weekly.

  • It already does. You will match players in the next tiers, both below and above
