I feel I'm addicted to Destiny

So I was unable to play destiny yesterday since the internet at my hotel wasn't working. While I couldn't play, I felt sad and upset that I couldn't do my bounties or the daily. I felt like I missed out. After I got back home today and played destiny for a few hours, I felt really happy and satisfied. Something bugs the shit out of me though, that I missed out on one day. The one day I haven't logged in to play since launch. Its really frustrating. The world hasn't ended, nor has my life. I just feel like this game has taken the top position as my favorite pastime. Its usually some sort of video game anyway(or book, movie, TV, board game, music), its just interesting that a game designed to be so monotonous can leave me wanting to come back again and again. I think they found out a way to inject crack into my eyeballs, just from looking at my TV screen. Thoughts are welcome and thanks for reading my first post. I appologize if this ends up in the wrong category. Edit: You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the comments so far :) Edit 2: Holy shit guys we're trending the top 10. Way to go addicts lol Edit 3: When I created this post, it was mainly for my own need to address my connection to this game. I felt I needed a way to see how far down the rabbit hole I had gone, so to speak. I welcome all comments regarding others personal attachments (or detachments) from all types, not just gaming. We are all capable of indulging too much in something we enjoy. The key is to not let it consume you and find help if you feel it might. That's the hardest part for me. Identifying and admitting when I start to indulge too much. The comments posted here since this began have allowed me to see that WE are not alone. WE are united. I want to thank everyone for their support, their information, their stories and personal experiences. Its you guys that I'm addicted to. You guys make this game fun. Now get the F out of here before I roll you all up and smoke you.

  • Hi, my name is Bill, and I am addicted to Destiny. Before Destiny, the last FPS I played was Goldeneye on N64. I was hesitant to buy Destiny for that reason alone; but one of my good friends kept pushing to buy it; needless to say, peer pressure is a motha... I didnt buy the game new, picked up a used copy from Gamestop, figured if I didn't like it, I am out $15 less dollars. After about 30 minutes of playing the game, I forgot that it was a FPS and was completely intrigued by the game. My first patrol through the cosmodrome took place around 3am cst and there werent many Guardians on my map. I didnt know what I was doing, dregs and vandals running around, thinking about being alone in an environment full of enemies was intense and captivating. Each day that I play the game I fell more in love with it. I thoroughly enjoyed it, prior to Destiny, I was all about that GTAV life... to date, I havent played GTA since before the heist release.. I have never had as much fun playing a video game as I do playing Destiny. Just when I thought the game couldnt get any better; I happened upon the100.io and joined Alpha Company 85. This took my enjoyment to a new level; the group of guys/gals that are in my group/clan are truly amazing. We play regularly just about everyday and I feel like my circle of friends has expanded. We are all like minded and have terrific conversations that span beyond the world of Destiny. The Destiny community is something I never new existed but now I cannot picture playing Destiny without it. We find new ways to enjoy the game together, just recently we began holding Raid Races where you can GET PAID TO RAID. I am a Mod, and one of our other Mods suggested that we hold Raid Races. 2 or more fireteams start a raid at the same time and the first team to beat the boss wins. Then that winning teams votes on an MVP, and that MVP receives a PSN gift card code for $20 provided by one of the Mods. There is nothing to gain here but fun, nobody is trying to earn profit, just increase the amount of fun that we share together. The generosity and support among our group I feel is second to none. Our the100 group is Alpha Company 85 and our official PSN clan is Alpha 85 Reloaded. We are a close group that welcomes all who want to maximize their fun potential while playing Destiny. If this appeals to you, and you do not belong to a clan, or are not happy with your clan, visit us, you are more than welcome. I do not intend for this message to be a ruse in order to "promote" our clan, I just wanted to share our experiences as I feel they are unique and are a testimony to the great Destiny community. Just the other day I was patrolling Venus knocking out some Queens bounties when I happened upon a group of 5 that was trying to enter VOG. I noticed they were struggling to get the spire erected. I hopped off my sparrow and lent a hand in knocking out the Praetorians. Instantly I received party and game invitations, unfortunately I did not have time for a raid, but I stayed until they had the spire up. This was just a chance encounter, yet it resulted in me befriending some really good Guardians. They were very welcoming and appreciative of my assistance and expressed their gratitude. To me, this is another example of the extraordinary Destiny community. Though I love playing Destiny I feel my addiction is bittersweet in the essence that I do not play any other games. I wanted to buy Battlefield, The Witcher, Arkham Knight, but I didn't because I knew they would just be collecting dust right next to Dying Light on my shelf. I wish I had more time to play these games, but honestly, I think I would just play more Destiny. The game is great, but the community is greater. If any of you are like minded and enjoy playing this great game, feel free to add me or join our group, my tag is, LTsMIGHTYMIDGETS. Take care of each other Guardians, kill them dead!

    • Although everything that everyone else has said is true about the loot addiction, grinding, random drops and all the rest of it, for me the addiction to Destiny has taken on a different form - it fits my current life. As a working father of three, like many of you, time for gaming has become limited. It has gotten to the point for me that if I am not having fun within the first five minutes of a game, I walk away. It may seem harsh to decide so quickly, but my time has become so valuable that I don't want to waste it. For example, I've put a good few hours into the Witcher 3, but the systems and combat are just so dense, I don't have the inclination to spend the hours necessary to figure it all out and do all the gathering that I'd need to. At least grinding in Destiny is synonymous with simply playing the game. Time is also a factor in another way - if I only have 20 minutes to spare, that's enough time for some patrols or one of the shorter strikes. If I have an hour, I can get into something longer, or have a few games of crucible. And at night, when they are all tucked up, well that's raid time! There's an activity in Destiny to suit every timeframe. Also for me, Destiny has proven to be something of a novelty in that it's a shooter I am actually competent at, dare I say even good at. This is a new thing for me, whereas with most FPSs I've tried, I just can't get good enough (or invest enough time) to keep up. This has led me to a state of play where I feel a strong pull to refine my play and work towards a being able to complete sections with aplomb and skill - for my fireteam as well as myself. Finally, there is the community I've recently found and joined, over at the 100 site, namely, Alpha Company 85. After some hiccups with the existing clan leadership's lack of responsiveness (we had to stage a digital coup and form a new, actually active, clan https://www.bungie.net/en/Clan/Playstation/1098188 ) it has proven to be a source of hilarity and enthusiasm night after night. Finding the right community reinvigorated my love for Destiny just as it was flagging, due to many players I'd been used to playing with dropping off as the Witcher/Arkham Knight took hold. And I don't blame them, they are likely fine games! But my final point would be that where I live in Canada, new games are now $80, which is just the point where I can't just spend what I want when I want. Much has been said about the price of the Taken King, and while I do think Bungie made mis-steps and continue to bungle what all the different versions mean, the prospect of $40 for more Destiny is much more appealing than $80 for another game.

    • The grind is boring, repetitive patrols just to level up weapons and armour, does my head in! Then the elusive light that is needed to ascend items, means an even slower grind. BUT I am still here! And love this game! Finally got into raiding and reeled in once again. So now I'm on a Raid fest which is just as frustrating because I don't want to use LFG and mostly the group of friends I run with are over it. Lot's about this game sucks but I want to tick the boxes, max out ALL gear, get those missing weapons and enjoy the community! So yes addiction rule!

    • Realistically, the game is designed (much like casino games) to trigger Dopamine production in the brain with rewards (or in this case a lack thereof) that inspire you to want to play more. http://www.psychologyofgames.com/2014/10/the-psychology-of-destinys-loot-systems/ This article does a pretty good job explaining why we're all getting that itch... Sadly enough, I feel like much of this game's continued playability can be attributed to the fact that humans are such suckers for free shit - as opposed to other games that keep players interested with innovation or mentally engaging storytelling... Either way, I plowed through the Daily, Weekly and Nightfall last night so I wouldn't miss out on the week's loot haul. Damn, they got me.

        • I felt that way, but now I just find it boring. Just got so repetitive. I have all the exotics except Gjallahorn and Thunderlord, some of them multiple times. I'm waiting for HoW in the hope of new life. Do not get me wrong, I've put more hours into Destiny than any other game, but, Borderlands has me now for a while.

        • I'm addicted to its the most repetitive game I've ever played but I just can't come away from it and it sounds like they've made the game round a gambling sense. You spend time as a wager to receive a payout in an exotic so it's a gambling addiction I think

          • I went through something similar. I had to go out of town for work and the hotel I stayed at was in Nowhere, NV. I had just purchased Shadows of Mordor before leaving, as I suspected the internet situation may be bad based on the remoteness of the town I was staying in. As I suspected, no internet. I was forced to play Shadows because I couldn't log onto Destiny for a week. I now hate Shadows of Mordor.

          • Agreed, I'm started to feel addicted as well. If I'm not working, I'm playing destiny, anywhere from 4 - 12 hrs at a time. I'm kinda ok with it though! It's been it great way to meet new people an stay in touch with friends an family who play. There are aspects of the game that are losing its luster, since all of that gear we grinded for is utterly useless after the next dlc. Maybe not "useless", but if it's not the best, then you might as well not use it (in my opinion).

            • This article in Polygon explains how the loot-questing is getting even worse with the DLC and updates. It's no wonder people start to find that playing the game interferes in their life, considering the staggering amount of time you have to play just to keep up with friends. Right now, I'm working up the guts to do a full wipe of all my save data and then delete the game (as well as the two DLC's that purchased in advance, but haven't played). I've never done anything like that before, and 200 hours is a lot of time to flush down the can. But at some point, I have to recognize that Destiny wasn't something I played for fun like I do many other games. I was feeding an obsession for this "loot grind" the way a gambler chases that perfect hand. And ironically, I don't even get any financial reward the way a compulsive gambler would. I have to say, it's been almost comforting to read the other comments here, finding out that it's not just me.

                • That's the way that Destiny was designed to be. You play to unlock cool gear, you do bounties to raise that gear and factions which give you more gear, you finally get your gear the way you want it, Bungie makes your gear weaker than new gear unless you reset your gear and you grind it all over again because you just want to have that maxed gear. This concept is the most addicting for video gamers because they always feel like they are working toward something, even if they have done that before. This concept eclipses the lack of story and content this game has.

It's digital crack I had balance until the DLC hit. It will take another week then I can go back to less gaming. It's the raids and nightfalls that get me. True cooperative gaming is addictive. You want to be an asset to a team so you have to level up gear and guns. All of which suck time. When the team wins everyone feels great.
