So some friends and I were discussing the Gjallarhorn last night and we pretty much all pronounced it a different way. Their opinion was that the J is silent and pronounced as a soft H and I feel like they are willfully ignoring the J. When typed into Google Translate it says that Icelandic was detected and it pronounced both the G and the J. (Which I think is a point in my favor btw) However I do not profess to know the Icelandic language so I would like to see how other people pronounce it, therefore I thought I would bring it to the forums. If there is yet another way to pronounce it please feel free to post it in the comments.
=)
Edit: Thanks everyone (well almost) for posting. I don't know much about the Norse mythology being of latin descent, so I really liked hearing from those who are in the know. I also highly enjoyed most of the rest of the answers. It's interesting to see how different peoples interpret/pronounce the same word. If I were going by my own known rules for languages, the "LL" would have been the "Y(ish)" sound. So thanks again for being helpful, this community isn't as bad as a lot of people think. =)
And due to one of the early posts that made us laugh we all have decided to henceforth call it the "Yolohorn" just to be dicks. So thanks for that too. 8D
I would go the Celtic/Nordic route and say it Gyall-ar-horn, with the "j" making a "Yuh" sound like a "y".

Edited by DeathByNINJA123: 11/4/2014 2:21:16 AMGYAL-AR-HORN. The J is pronounced as a Y. Play Skyrim a bit, you'll learn. Tho I'm pretty sure the G is silent too, so it SHOULD be YALL-AR-HORN.

GGhorn or Ballerhorn
-
Where is the mythos from, it looks German or Nordic

4 RepliesEdited by Smiththedude: 11/4/2014 1:47:27 AMIts none of those. It's YAW-ler-horn. Learn to German ;)

-
Its yalahorn bc of the g and j
-
6 Replies*perks a brow* I pronounce it Galla-Horn... and I don't care if it's right or not. :p
-
It's the middle one I'm not one hundred percent positive but I'm pretty sure during the trailer it was in that is the way they pronounced it
-
Gal-a-horn
-
None of the above? Others I think have it already, pronounce the 'j' as 'y' and you're good
-
Sun sing-er Or Sun singe-r
-
I always thought that it was yal-lar-horn or some variation of that. I think the "g" and "j" are silent.
-
8 RepliesThe fact that people don't realise that the Gjallarhorn is Heimdallrs horn boggles my mind (blown at the onset of Ragnarok before Loki kills Heimdallr) Pronounce the J as a Y and the rest is simple.
-
Gal-la-horn? Or atleast that's what everyone calls it on u tube
-
Yeah you don't have the right one up there. The J makes a Y sound. Like in the word Yeah.
-
Gjallahorn= gya-luh-horn. Ithe "J" makes the same sound as in fjord.
-
Ga-J-la-jorn Jesus Christ why is this so difficult.
-
Gyallarhorn. Its a Scandinavian name, and Gj is often pronounced Gy.
-
me and some of my clan members couldn't decide on one pronunciation a while ago since most of us not including me unfortunately have it so we started calling it "the holler back youngin". don't steal it

Edited by Demogrim: 11/4/2014 1:16:58 AMyallarhorn as Gyallarhorn are both correct. G CAN is silent, J is pronounced as a y like sound. Just like MC armor Mjolnir(meyolniir). Its Norse... cmon guys...
-
7 RepliesI've been calling it like "gyaller-horn". Pretty sure that's wrong though. According to Google Translate, it means "megaphone" and sounds like "gatahort".

Tomato Thomato

I've always thought of it as gyal-lar-horn
-
It's pronounced 'Boom-you-die.' Gawd, get it right.
