So some friends and I were discussing the Gjallarhorn last night and we pretty much all pronounced it a different way. Their opinion was that the J is silent and pronounced as a soft H and I feel like they are willfully ignoring the J. When typed into Google Translate it says that Icelandic was detected and it pronounced both the G and the J. (Which I think is a point in my favor btw) However I do not profess to know the Icelandic language so I would like to see how other people pronounce it, therefore I thought I would bring it to the forums. If there is yet another way to pronounce it please feel free to post it in the comments.
=)
Edit: Thanks everyone (well almost) for posting. I don't know much about the Norse mythology being of latin descent, so I really liked hearing from those who are in the know. I also highly enjoyed most of the rest of the answers. It's interesting to see how different peoples interpret/pronounce the same word. If I were going by my own known rules for languages, the "LL" would have been the "Y(ish)" sound. So thanks again for being helpful, this community isn't as bad as a lot of people think. =)
And due to one of the early posts that made us laugh we all have decided to henceforth call it the "Yolohorn" just to be dicks. So thanks for that too. 8D
None of those are right! Correct pronunciation is: DANCER-HORN
-
10 RepliesUs Scandinavians know it is pronounced yallarhorn, it literally means yelling horn. In mythology it was a horn blown by heimdallr to signal the ragnarok, or apocalypse. :)
-
1 ReplyI've never heard anyone pronounce it yall-er-horn, and I hope I never do. In destiny dialect Gjallarhorn is usually pronounced Ga-lar-horn.
-
You've walked into a minefield my friend. Icelandics, the minority opinion that Bungie uses as a 'credible source', Scandanavians and Norse mythology/historians have differing views. Like we Americans so (in)eloquently do, I suggest branding it without regard to its lineage or culture of origin. God save the Gally!
-
YOLO-HORN (use it now before the nerf) UNOBTAINIUMHORN (for some) YO-GOTTA-HORN (when you finally get it for the first time) SWISS-MULTI-HORN (when you use it for every situation)

Yal-la-horn

I don't care exactly how it's pronounced cuz everyone's gonna say it differently but I tend to call it gya-lar-horn

According to Dictionary.com it should be pronounced yahl-lahr-hawrn. It is the horn used by Heimdall (Idris Elba) to warn the gods of Ragnarok. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/gjallarhorn

2 RepliesG is silent and the J makes a Y sound in common english. So it is pronounced Yallarhorn
-
Edited by Jazeservedyou: 8/2/2015 10:38:31 AMIt's Yarl-lar-horn. It's mentioned in Norse mythology as a horn that warns of Ragnarok, whom supposedly would signal the end of days. Norse originates in Scandanavia, Scandanavia pronounce J to sound like a Y. The G is silent.
