There needs to be a law that lets people like this get drafted into the military.

Irrelevant. I'm a pretty relaxed person, but you should show some respect for the people that have shown the courage, bravery, and selflessness to earn the actual medal. Wearing that around like a fashion statement devalues the medal and is an insult to those that have fought, died and actually earned it.
-
They volunteered. They shouldn't serve their country to feel better than others and win prizes, they should do it because they feel they can make a difference and it's the right thing to do. Maybe people will learn to not give blind praise.
-
That's not what they do it for, it's not for the medal, it's for their country that they serve that they are awarded the medal. The medal symbolizes their bravery, sacrifice, and actions. Wearing it as a fashion statement is disrespectful to those that earned it.
-
Muh patriotism It's not a fashion statement, it's for couple day convention that goes along with a character they are cosplaying as. Better petition to remove the medal from the fictional character since they didn't fight in any real wars either.

Personally, I don't really give a shit that they gave the MoH to some MLP character. There's more offensive things that have been done in cartoons and TV shows. However, in no way does that mean it's acceptable to do things you see on TV in real life. If it was I could go run people over in a tank, but I would just be cosplaying that one episode of Family Guy.
-
Did you just compare someone wearing a thumb sized piece of metal to going on a murderous rampage in a tank? Lol
-
Hey, we're just cosplaying, may as well go all the way if we're doing obviously stupid things that clearly would offend people. If there was a cartoon character that carried around a bag full of aborted fetuses, then I wanted to cosplay as that character, then I would have to be really idiotic to think that's a good idea and I won't get the shit beaten out of me.
-
Considering the majority of people accept abortion I see no reason for anyone to actually care about carrying around aborted fetuses.
-
... I.. I'm not prepared to deal with this high a volume of stupid. I'm out.

If he wants to wear a medal that signifies that you have acted with incredible courage, bravery, and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done in the face of death, then I say they should make him earn it, or learn to show respect to those that did.

Edited by Flee: 5/8/2014 9:09:56 AMSo you're advocating forcing someone who doesn't even live in the US to respect a symbol some people in some other country attach meaning to by having him forcefully drafted in the military? Do you then feel that everyone wearing a fez in the US should be punished by law? You know, because some people in Turkey consider it extremely offensive for foreigners to wear one. What about everyone wearing purple shoulder pieces, which correspond with the highest possible military award in the Indian army? Or a golden star on a green background present on any piece of clothing or apparel? It's Pakistan's version of the medal of honor and I have little doubt that any Pakistani with military ties would deem it offensive for a foreigner to just wear something resembling their medal like that. It's downright hypocritical. The only reason anyone cares is because it's the American sign of valor. Not a single person in this thread would actually change their attire for a cosplay or halloween party because "somewhere else in the world some people attach some meaning to this symbol and it would be offensive for me to wear it". A reaction like "lol, the Turkish should stop taking this so seriously. It's just a hat, who cares." would be a lot more likely to happen. The fact that there's actually people in this thread boasting about how they'd beat this kid up for as much as considering wearing a piece of apparel that holds a meaning to some people in a different country is sickening. He's not using it to mock, boast or impersonate anyone. He's wearing a fake medal that looks like the medal the character he's cosplaying as wears too. Any kind of medal, uniform or something similar will inevitably have some meaning to someone somewhere. The only reason people care now is it because it so happens to be an American symbol this time around. Would it be a medal, insignia, uniform or any piece of apparel that resembled any foreign symbol of meaning, no one would give a shit and everyone would respond with "those people should get over themselves".
