50 yrs old and waiting for Destiny!

I have just become a member of the 50's and over group (and loving it!) and after growing up in a non computer game world (loved that as well!) am amazed at the prospect of a game like Destiny being developed. Am I alone or are they any other children of the 60's eagerly awaiting this games release?

  • I am 51 will be 52 this November and will play till my dying days. You are not alone. I just wish there was a way to show that in game. A special badge or ability for us old timers. Something you can only get if you are...let say over 40? May the traveler watch over you.

A lot of times when I finish kicking ass with my clan full of grown men and we say "Good Game" in a deep voice ravaged by time and bad habits, the youngins on the other team will say "Oh my GOD! How OLD are you?" And we tell them. Them: "I'll never play video games when I'm that old?" Us: "So, when will you quit?" Them: "I don't know. When I get married." One of us who is married: "You're probably right, kid." And then we all laugh. I'll be playing video games in the retirement home. There's no stopping me.

      • It is nice to know that you are not an anomaly. I am 57 an have often described myself as a life long gamer. I pre-ordered Destiny for my Xbox One almost as soon as it was available. Keep at it and don't let anyone tell you that you are being silly. Gaming is just good, clean fun that helps keep your reflexes sharp and your imagination active. Game on!

        • Hell yea. My pops is in his 60s. While he cannot play games, he can't get the controller down, he enjoys sci-fy hard core so I invite him over to hang out with my son and watch me play. Fun family reunion.

        • I'm 45 and been playing games since pong in the 70s. I still love gaming as much as I did then. The only problem I see with gaming as I get older is failing eyesight and slower reflexes. But then I don't snowboard double diamond runs or float the class 5 rapids anymore either. Youth is truly wasted on the young. Enjoy your good health and energy while you can kids. It will start to go down hill much faster than you think. One day you will wake up, look in the mirror and realize, damn it, my looks and body will never get better than they are right now. At that point time speeds up and every single year goes by just a little bit faster than the previous one. Ugh sorry for the downer post. Deej, can you guys please invent something like in the movie Avatar? I would love to wake up in a game world with total control over a young healthy body.

        • 40 ur old gamer. Married with 3 kids who love gaming just as much as I do. Not joking when I say I've had nearly every console since very early 80's back in the day of the zx81/spectrum 16k. Back in the days of old developers like Ocean. Oh the good old days. Can't wait for destiny. Played alpha & beta and can't wait for my ghost edition to arrive

        • I'm not in my 50s but my mom is and she loves Destiny (and video games in general). She doesn't play much anymore because she has very bad carpal tunnel but she called me every day during the beta to ask me to stream it so she could watch. I've had tons of fun playing video games with my mom over the years. It's definitely something I will do with my kid if I have one in the future.

          • I'm loving this thread! 37 years old here and I first played on an Intellivision, which prompted me to beg my parents to buy an Atari 2600. We've come a long way since Joust and Galaga... I almost quit gaming around the time that the 360 slim came out because of all the annoying children swearing over the mic. But alas, I could not give up the fun that is gaming and I have learned how to mute people very quickly. I actually really enjoy the social aspect of it now that we can chat and play cooperatively with one another as long as I enjoy the company of laid back gamers who simply play for fun. I am part of an Age 30+ group on Xbox One gearing up to play Destiny (although we play other games too)... feel free to come check us out at http://www.oadgaming.com. We're a non-exclusive group of gamers (meaning we don't care if you belong to other groups or not) and we're looking for other groups of similar mindsets to form alliances with or recruit into our own groups. We have members from their 30's to 60's at the moment and we don't care about KD ratio or have a minimum time commitment to the group in order to participate. I usually play 1-2 nights per week and understand most responsible adults have very little time to commit to gaming. You can also check out my recruitment post here for a little more info: http://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/67563172/0/0

Awesome! Its kind of funny because this generation of middle aged men 40-50 don't really play video games. Which is understandable they have many forms of responsibilities to take care of but the main reason is that older people like yourself didn't grow up with video games as a young child. I mean we can honestly all say the majority of all older people we know are not in on the whole tech boom we have had in the past decade and a half. But I guarantee as we progress through the years older gamers will become a regular thing and not so much a rare type of thing. I mean primarily 80's and 90's kids were involved more so in gaming and it has become a enjoyable experience for many of them. So saying that i really expect the numbers of older gamers to increase substantially around 2020 and so forth. I mean i know I'm gonna still be playing well into my 40s and above but I am going to school for a Bachelors degree in video game design. :P

          • I'm 42 years old, il live in France. Started at 10 with an Intellivision, and never stopped playing video games. I remember the eighties when it was strange to be a video game player.. Everybody looked at us like we were fools, loosing our time in front of a screen. Now with smartphones it's a non stoping activity.. Last year i had one of the best moments of my life playing "The last of us" (i will get it on PS4 and play it again), and now in 2014 i just can't wait to play Destiny for the 10 years to come. The Alpha was a great start. The Beta will be better. And in september i'll be 43... GG to all of you.

            • Almost 40 and gaming since the Commodore 64 and Atari 2600. I always find it odd when people just stop gaming at a certain age. I may not have as much time to game as I once did, and I'm not as easily impressed by a game, but it's still one of my favorite hobbies.
