Fleet Combat in Halo 3

I think that the books did a good job showing what the rest of the UNSC does during combat, and not just on the ground now it wont fit in the story as far as i know so itd probley be more focuses on multiplayer, but think of it something like the space battles in star wars battlefront 2, but better with better AI, moving (or live) capital ships, and larger i just thought it would be a cool idea and it would deff. bring something new to the table for halo 3 mulitplayer. i dont know if that strays to far from the minds of most halo players, but i personally can see it fitting within the game, tell me what you think [Edited on 9/4/2006]

 • yea thats right, i forgot about homeworld, that is a very well made type of game, and it builds off a rts like version that halo was built off, so i could see how it could be utilized, also, i like the way empire at war had both land and space battles, of course it wasnt a great game because they didnt try hard enough, mostly because they didnt have to because it was a star wars game...but nevertheless, it sold extremly well, thus giving motivation to bungie....

 • I'd rather they just make a game after Halo 3, that is a flight simulator. (Or something like Homeworld?) Putting Fleet Combat in Halo 3 would be too drastic a change to gameplay.. Really.

 • Actually, if we're sticking (chronological and factual) to everything we've been told about the Human-Covenant war, there is no point in discussing this. Why? The major human warship production yards were destroyed when Reach fell to the Covenant. The shipyards above Mars can be considered destroyed, unless the Covenant bypassed Mars completely (we're never told this explicitly but there is precedent to believe they bypassed Mars). The primary UNSC instruction facilities (specifically the Naval Academy on Reach) are gone, or whittled down to almost non-existence. The current officer corps of the UNSC is all they've got for the time being (almost nothing after the Second Battle for Earth), until (if the humans "win" the Human-Covenant war) they can rebuild and train new officers to fill the ranks. These new officers would be completely green; most of the veterans would be busy training new recruits and would most likely be pulled off of line duty. So, even if the humans win they'll be left with only a handful of badly damaged ships with virtually no repair/refit ability and an officer corps that will probably have very poor post-war morale and will be busy training new recruits to fill the places of the thousands of officers that have been lost over the past 25 years. In the end...whichever way Halo 3 plays out...the humans will either be dead or in a very bad position. I'm ignoring any possible Elite-Human alliance because they'd have their own problems. Any game focusing on fleet combat would have to occur during the Human-Covenant war (pre-Halo 3), the Pre-Contact era, or many years after the Human-Covenant War. On top of that…there has never been a large scale space-naval combat simulation worth its packaging cost. Star Wars: Empire at War is a poor example; the creators of that game took a very liberal approach when it came to sticking with what the Expanded Universe has established regarding starship/armament/capabilities. Star Wars Rebellion is another poor, though more realistic, example. We won’t even talk about Star Trek’s fleet simulation games.

 • I would love to see a map like boarding action but with some more closed off sides (explain the open parts as holes that the plasma blew up or something). but something like star wars battlefront 2? no, this is halo. if i wanted battlefront i would have played battlefront. but maybe an interactive element to the map? perhaps a button on the bridge of the ship that you hold down for a little while which makes the ships go into a slipspace jump (with appropriate environmental effects :-)) and any banshees or vehicles outside are destroyed? i can imagine where it would be unbalanced and bog down gameplay somewhat but still i love the concept of fighting ship to ship while a space battle is going on. the slipspace could spit you out at one of the halos or something. imagine this: pillar of autumn vs. covenant capital ship. have them fighting above earth (yeah i know it doesnt fit the storyline, but i always loved the autumn and having it fighting over earth is pretty cool imo) and the environment could show the earth out of some of the windows, other capital ships fighting, explosions, etc. every now and then have a plasma shot fire from the covie ship or a mac round from the autumn that hits the other ship and on impact shakes the ship violently (might make it difficult to place the perfect sniper shot). as you go from area to area airlocks (very quick moving ones so the gameplay doesnt slow down too much) seperate the blown open sections of the ship and the non blown open ones. then again maybe airlocks arent needed and we can just say spartans and elites are fighting over the two ships and AI are controlling the ships :-p imagine cortana or some AI voice on the autumn saying something like "brace for impact" a second or so before the plasma shot hits. I've always liked interactive and atmospheric levels. [Edited on 9/5/2006]

 • That's right. When the FPS portion ends, who knows where Bungie will take the franchise. The Haloverse possibilities are endless. Hell, they might even make a space-combat flight simulator like that of Crimson skies. Straying from thought here, it would look hellishly nice, to have two teams of fighters going at it, and all around, plasma beams, MAC rounds and archer missiles would be zooming past. And as a pilot, you'd have to shoot down each Covenant Seraph, or vice versa, and even dodge flaming cruisers. Okay, back on track.

 • first off, i said that battlefront two would just be a building block, secondly, it doesnt have to fit in with the spartans, there are other people in the game you know, which is why i first mentioned whyd it be cool to see the rest fo the unsf in action, which also counters the coment about master cheif, it doesnt have to include him at all, the halo series doesnt have to be about master cheif 24/7, as halo 2 showed us, it can showcase someone different. fourthly, the point to even having such a gametype, granted it would better as a stand alone title or such, was to give bungie more variance within the halo universe with its gameplay, and with how much flight type of games sell, not as much as fps, but significantly with a large base of fans, it would actually be, in my opinion, a worthwhile project

 • Well, at least it doesn't involve the Chief taking comand of a capital ship. First, this has been posted a million times Second, just because we saw the Chief fly a Long Sword off of Halo doesn't mean he's an ace pilot.

 • Perhaps when halo 3 is finnished completing the trilogy bungie may choose at some point to expand there universe in other directions. Don't expect a battlefront though. Bungie got where they are by being innotive not imitative

 • flamedude i was about to say that lol. i think the best possible thing would a squad first person shooter in where you are a marine (maybe ODST) and follow levels from fall of reach, maybe some battles that we didn't see in halo 1 etc etc. i somehow just don't think space battles would work.

The squad shooter might promote the possibility of this.
The RTS isn't too far away, as long as you have C&C generals. Look here

 • It's not what halo as a game is about. That's what's nice about books, they can go into more detail and it's literally all scripted, so dramatics aren't an issue. The games dont' really have the same freedom. While the books with the multiple spartans and the monologues, space battles, etc all seem really cool, they dont' translate well into gameplay. It's inherent to the medium in some ways. Games arent' allowed that much freedom without turning into interactive movies. It's the same reason games that turn into movies usually suck. Whereas movies and books can go back and forth without losing quality. [Edited on 9/5/2006]

 • i hope they make halo related games like an mmofps or something. EA isnt going to buy out halo rights because microsoft owns them. The space battles in Battlefront 2 sucked. they were boring and repetitive. Plus it wouldnt make any sence at all: The SPARTANS were designed for land fighting, and the UNSC didn't really board covenant ships when they didnt have to... they just blew em up. so it would jus be capital shps destroyers and cruisers hammering away at eachother while players go really fast in fighters.

 • i think they bungie would benifit for at least trying, even if they fail, they at least tried, and with such games like SW battlefront 2 to be a foundation, theyd get something that works. i think they should because of how much people expect from this game, halo 2 had some giant leaps, but some people were still disapointed, adding a variety of multiplayer, not just fps gametypes, will give the game more longevity

I highly doubt Bungie would throw in a few space battles where the player controls Longswords, etc. However, Bungie has stated that H3 ends this particular story arc, which leaves open the possibility of more Halo-related games in the future. So maybe if you pray hard enough, Bungie will make a game that takes place in the Halo universe with space battles...who knows?
