As someone who gets very addicted to Destiny 2, how do you keep yourselves from going in too deep?

So the title pretty much states how my relationship has been with Destiny 1 and 2 for the past 7 or so years. I have a pretty hard time pulling away from Destiny 2 if I ever reinstall the game (I usually uninstall if I go too far into my spiral). I can already see users here trolling just by saying "just dont play D2 lul", but thats not really the point of this post. I personally enjoy this game a lot. The gunplay is great, the abilities make you feel like a demigod, and its generally one of the most gorgeous looking games I've played. I think in terms of most games around today, D2 is pretty unmatched in terms of its polish. Destiny is actually part of the reason I personally am pursuing a career in doing concept art. But I'm willing to maybe accept this as a possibility: I just simply ruined this activity for myself and cant play it like any other normal person would, like how an ex-alcoholic cant just enjoy a drink at a social gathering. If anyone here has had the same issue as me, but managed to sort it out, lemme know!

  • Usually try to play single-player games. Recently opened up a modless Skyrim run and a Fallout 4 play through with the Enclave mod added on to it. Fun stuff; keeps me out of this game, or at least limits how long I play it.

  • Take the time to really think about if the stuff you are spending time doing on the game is worth it. Do you really need that new nightfall ordeal weapon? Is that raid weapon really better than something you already have? Is high stat roll armour really going to change the game for you? I have completely stopped caring about loot to the point where I don't keep up with pinnacles, don't dismantle my blues or throwaway legendaries, don't decode any engrams including exotics, and don't clean out my postmaster. Because genuinely nothing in the game right now is worth even inspecting and insta deleting. VoG is the only thing I pay attention to my loot in because those guns are actually quite good, otherwise couldn't care less. When you can really decide what is and isn't worth your time, you can deal with playing a lot less. Come back when the game has stuff worth putting energy into, but please, don't force yourself to grind override and to inspect every legendary world drop you get in detail just for the sake of having it. It's not worth it, and if you want to play less then that's a perfect start.

  • One crucible match usually does the trick.

For me it was finding a different addictive game that actually has an end. I started playing other games again, like Deus Ex, Far Cry, etc., and it helped because those games have limits. They actually stop at some point. So in effect it was like weening myself off of Destiny (which is a totally effed up way to think about it but it was true. I had a problem). Afterwards when I went back, I was so far removed from the patterns and schedules and friends I had before that it was easy to just mess around for a bit and log off, versus the obsessive pursuit of completing every activity available. It’s true though, having a job and personal life does help. My wife pretty much told me if I play the game in her presence again we would have a problem. So that limited things a bit.

          • I usually think about what destiny could be or simply play some pvp. It Shows me glaring issues with the game and sandbox and this usually leads to me leaving for a few days. Destiny has no competition which is bad for the game for the lack of investment of bungie to improve things

I’d rather be playing with the gf’s nookie than this game. A bad day playing with her cat will always be better than finishing a raid or making it to the lighthouse.

              • Play the game to your hearts content as long as it doesn’t affect you in life. Learn self control and know when to stop, just because someone cant drink alcohol anymore doesn’t mean they cant find other ways to have fun in a social gathering. Same goes for anything in life, do what you love as long as it doesn’t hurt you in the process.

              • Best suggestions I got 1) Play other games to break it up 2) Have dedicated “Destiny no play” days. Maybe Monday since it’s right before reset and the least important day in most cases 3) Try to find another IRL thing you can do that doesn’t make you itch to play and separates you entirely from the gaming environment

                • You’ve answered your own question. I’m not a mental health professional. But if you’re addicted and it affects your life. You need to avoid it completely. Otherwise. if you are disciplined set limits to time play or day(s) a week. 1 or 2 hours a day. Do you really want to be at the end of your life one day thinking. “Man, if I only grinded more”? This game is irrelevant in the grand scheme.

                    • The main thing that pulls me away from the game is having a job. I would be homeless without a job and bills never stop. Focus on your health. I was born with hypothyroidism and have severe fatigue and weight gain if I don’t stay on top of it and check my levels regularly. Get out and exercise and eat conscientiously. Relationships too. I live near all my family and I try to visit them as much as I can. We all help each other out and it’s good to socialize normally. All the tips I got. Good luck.
