Does items in inventory increase light without being equipped?

I know I heard this somewhere. Say i am using my recluse which is level 650 or what ever. If I have another gun in the same slot in my inventory , does my it take that into count for my light ? (I know it doesn't show it on your overall light ). Is this true? If so, no need to upgrade any pieces until max level , and just keep the highest light level blue in your inventory.

It does but only for when you get new loot.

    • Unless this has changed since launch (which, knowing how scummy Bungie is, it may have), yes. Your unequipped gear anywhere (inventory or vault, or even on other characters) determines the power that your gear drops at. The highest possible gear that you can equip is used in the calculation to determine the power of drops.
