Howdy #Offtopic, this is something I usually don't talk about. However, I've been seeing this floating around for a while now, and I figured I'd ask all of you.
In the "Remaster" of FFVIII (I'm not discussing the quality of the remaster, I'm just glad this game can be played on modern hardware, and I can finally scrap the garbage PC port), there are some changes to a couple 3d models that are rubbing people the wrong way. These changes include:
1. Changing Siren to have a full skirt, instead of being open in the front with a yellow...thing...covering her lady bits.

2. Raising Rinoa's under shirt up to cover her cleavage more.

Is this really censorship? They didn't have the original assets to the game, and had to remake them, so is it just a design change the team wanted to make?
If it is just a design change they wanted to make, does that make it not censorship, even though it is still "censoring" the original?
Am I a bad person for liking these new designs more? Even if it is censorship?
If the images don't load let me know.
I'm also going to ask your opinion on the matter. I know many of you won't really care, but I am interested in the opinions of those who do.

3 RepliesIs it censorship; Maybe. Both changes are relatively minor, though, so I personally would say not really. Is liking a change censorship brought about bad? No, not at all. My opinion on this? I think it’s a little silly to make a big deal out of, to be completely honest.

1 ReplyNever played it, I dont really have an opinion on the matter.

1 ReplyIt's been edited on purpose. I'd call it a form of censorship because all the changes made are based on "sexual content."

4 Replies... Personally, I don't give a damn because it's a weeb game, is it censorship? Yes. Is it bad? Not necessarily. Is it good? Also not necessarily...
not included in the DLC
1 ReplyWithout looking at the images, it IS censorship. But it's the good kind of censorship. Like Cobravert said, it's never been okay the way the gaming community has presented women, and this change is just a part of the progression gaming still needs. It's a positive change that we should be respecting and praising Square Enix (I presume it was SE's decision) for.

Is this really censorship?
Kinda, yeah, but it isn't that it's inappropriate to do so. They have to make female imagery more in the context of today than what was allowed in the past. That said, female imagery has been through the ringer for decades in gaming, and it was never appropriate.

1 ReplyThe siren thing, sure. That was definitely a conscious choice. The "change" to Rinoa... I think the artist were working off memory rather than taking 1:1 measurements. I honestly wouldn't have noticed if someone wasn't pointing it out.

I would definitely say it's at least a little bit of censorship, but overall though I don't think it's a bad thing to change, I can definitely understand why they did it for sure.

1 ReplyIt could technically fall under the definition of censorship, but it isn’t a bad thing for them to do. If they feel like changing a character’s appearance in their game they are free to do so, and it’s not like it affects the game in any way.
