Favorite cosmic horror book/idea/movie?
Mine is the classic Call of Cthulhu. Can’t really say any good cosmic horror movies have come out that are alright (besides the Thing), but maybe you all have other opinions.

IT. The book, not the movies. -
2 RepliesEdited by Pahvi: 5/17/2019 4:39:19 PMWe need quality cosmic horror movies, or even better, a series. AM1200 stuck with me, a short movie from 2009(?) -blam!- was allright, i guess, 2001. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0264508/ why tf bungie blams -blam!- 😆 game:s Darkest Dungeon & Vanishimg of ethan carter, some lovecraftian feels. Haven't played the new call of cthulhu game.
Dark corners of the earth was good, gunplay kind of ruined it, lost all the tension imo
3 RepliesSoma is great cosmic style horror game!
perhaps you could join the void...
Event Horizon is pretty good

You can't spell cosmic horror without Lovecraft-esque in it. Of all Lovecraft's story my favorites are; The Colour out of Space, Shadows Over Innsmouth, and At The Mountain of Madness
-
5 RepliesBloodborne is a great example. A good movie that probably fits the definition is Annihilation. That movie was criminally underrated IMO.
-
2 RepliesJust saying this right now, literally every single space opera is incomplete without some form of Lovecraftian influence. Just sayin.

Although Call of Cthulhu was a great read, I personally enjoyed The Shadow Over Innsmouth novella. I liked how in depth it went with everything it had in it. But then again, I was always more interested with the rank and file baddies of the mythos than the larger players, such as the shogoths and deep ones, and The Shadow Over Innsmouth definitely hit it's mark with that category.

1 ReplyEdited by concreteninja85: 5/15/2019 5:53:40 PMIf The Mist counts as cosmic horror, then that is definitely up there as one of my favorites, right along with The Thing from 1982.

Any of HP Lovecraft’s works come to mind, with The Colour Out of Space being my favourite.

1 ReplyEdited by ALIAS-F4LS: 5/14/2019 11:27:01 PMI've enjoyed The King In Yellow by R.W. Chambers along with the Joe Hill comic Locke & Key: Welcome To Lovecraft. I have hope for The Sinking City video game since it looks interesting. Even the SCP universe has some pretty good shorts involving cosmic horror.

4 RepliesDead Space and Alien is a great cosmic horror in my opinion.

Edited by The Superego: 5/15/2019 11:46:10 AMMy favorite right now is Getter Robo, but I've yet to watch Ideon and that might surpass it.

It's a game, and that would be Bloodborne

2 RepliesEdited by Guiro97: 5/14/2019 10:32:59 PMAt the mountains of madness. Bloodborne is definitely up there too.

Alien

2 RepliesEdited by StoneFlare21: 5/14/2019 9:57:29 PMStuff from Lovecraft comes to mind (most of the more common ones). Does Stranger things count, cause if it does then the Demigorgon is pretty freaky. I'll edit the list when more come to mind.

1 ReplyThe Thing is one of my favorites, too. Another similar movie is Alien, if for whatever reason you haven’t heard of it. Its sequel Aliens is just as good but much less a horror movie. The video game Alien: Isolation is a fantastic spiritual sequel to Alien and quite possibly one of if not the best horror game ever made.

7 RepliesDon't like Lovecraft's writing. That said, John Carpenter's The Thing was probably inspired by him, and that's one of my favourite films - so I vote that!

1 ReplyThere's a webcomic I like called Broodhollow that has some Cosmic Horror themes in it as well as many others. Also, I really like Emrakul from Magic the Gathering. So Eldrazi are these things that exist in the space between Planes. They have these physical manifestations that appear as big tentacle monsters, but according to someone, that's just a fraction of their power. "Like a hand dipped into a pool." Emrakul was drawn to the plane of Innistrad by someone with a grudge that wanted the place destroyed. After Emrakul warped the plane and it's denizens into monsters, the rest if the plane united against her. Vampires, zombies, ghosts, and the Magic universes version of the Avengers known as the Gatewatch. They didn't do so hot. Eventually Emrakul and Jace the mind mage had a lovely game of chess and a conversation. Emrakul knew she shouldn't be there, it wasn't Innistrads time. So she took control of another Planeswalker, Tamiyo (who was only there to watch and record what happened because stories) and made them use one of their super powerful world ending no no scrolls to bind herself to the moon. Emrakul defeated herself...for reasons...

15 RepliesBloodborne was darn near flawless. Favorite book has to be The Colour Out of Space.

1 ReplyEdited by LahDsai: 5/15/2019 6:11:59 AMBeyond the Aquila Rift Maybe a bit more sci-fi but definitely has elements of cosmic horror. Also, if you're counting The Thing, I think this would qualify. The Southern Reach Trilogy might qualify as well. You could also check out the 2010 film Monsters. It's kind of similar to Cloverfield. Some of Junji Ito's works definitely deal with cosmic horror. In terms of Lovecraft I prefer At the Mountains of Madness and The Dunwich Horror.
