It's just a game.

It's just a game. Something to enjoy when you have free time, or something you make time to enjoy often. I recall getting an email about 5 years ago from Bungie, telling me about an opportunity to take part in an online large scale server test on their brand new game Destiny. If I signed up, downloaded the Alpha and logged into the game within a 4 hour window I'd be rewarded with a unique emblem upon purchasing the full game. It was pretty unstable, basically patrol on the moon. It crashed a bunch of times but it gave Bungie a lot of good data and I was hooked. Across a few accounts I've logged thousands of hours with Destiny and Destiny 2. At first it was fun to play along side my friends. Then it became an addiction to collect everything. At some point I started focusing on collecting everything, completing everything, pushing my limits and becoming better. I had to have all of the adept weapons, all of the heroic raid armor, the trials weapons and so on.. it became an obsession. Then Destiny 2 came along, similar rocky start Destiny had, the story of losing our vaults and our light was hard to take but time to move on to better things.. or so I thought. It slowly improved, the direction was more or less up. Then Forsaken hit, with similar force to the taken king. Fantastic.. at first. Then it felt like Bungie partially abandoned Destiny 2 and the community in favor of investing resources in Destiny 3 and drawing Destiny 2 gameplay out by reducing drop rates and adding to the grind. While DMG and Cozmo seem to check in from time to time and tell us they will pass it along to the team, it's clear the majority of the team have moved on. The current team working on Destiny 2 feels skeleton at best. With the common issues of the enhancement core economy, poor matchmaking putting premade teams against solo players, Luna/NF still dominating all PvP modes creating a stale HC meta, small but regular power increases leaving us holding on to cores instead of masterworking armor because something else might come along and make the current armor obsolete, repetitive mechanics every major and ultra stomping the ground and shooting you accross the map or into a wall, unnecessary subclass nerfs intended for PvP having a negative effect on PvE, terrible armor aesthetics... the list goes on. Any new content or event used to be met with anticipation, these events feel devalued with false difficulty and forced excess grinding. I no longer have any feelings good or bad whatsoever. Even completing nightfalls solo flawless doesn't feel like an accomplishment any more. This is not a rant, I'm not storming out the door, these are my genuine feelings about the state of a game I loved to play. All comments will be read with logic, I just hope you can use logic if you chose to comment or add to my story, any toxicity will be ignored. After almost 5 years of this addiction, I think I'm finally ready for a break.

  •
It's just a game.
Oh, you sweet summer child. This isn't a game. This is a matter of life and death. Anyone who disagrees with me is an idiot and should stop playing Destiny forever and praise me as the best player in existence. Breaks are for the week and stupid. Only educated people with common sense know that to enjoy this game you must tear down others and play it 24/7 while screaming at bungie about how the game sucks. Now kneel before the best player in the world.

    • Yeah, I just reduced my playing time from 4-5 hours a day to around 4 hours a week. Bungie is going out of their way to screw with me, so I'm done jumping through there hoops. I don't care if there's a Destiny 3. My money is going toward a new computer, not a new Porsche for the guy who runs Bungle. Maybe he can buy it with cores.

      • Last year I was suppose to belt up in Jiujitsu and Judo before I got injured. November, they gave away the game for free, shortly then I bought forsaken and annual pass. It took me 2 whole months before I was finally able to play Black Armory, but I gave the game so much of my time. I was already healed up December but I found all sorts of reasons not to train. My coach started inquiring about me because it isn't like me to be out of training for a long time. I gave lame excuses. Someone showed me the site that counts the time you've wasted on D2. I was shocked. Not only of the time I wasted but mainly because I felt I barely got to play the parts of the game that I liked. I would say probably half that time I was in the middle of some meaningless grind or in the tower fixing stuff. But I was still playing. The real awakening came when I talked to a guy who took his Not Forgotten WAY too seriously. The way he hyped it was like he completed a Masters degree or a Phd or something. Some guys who have those pinnacle guns are cool but this guy was way too intense. It's his time, so to each his own. But I thought it's a bit sad to have this illusion of accomplishment and superiority when in fact, it has no real world value. That's a messed up way to end up in. I went back to training last week. I like this game. But yes, it is still just a game. I'll still play it, but honestly I would expect D2 to hopefully give more value for the time people invest in it.

        • Destiny 2 sure has its issues, but in total fairness (and I’m not defending anyone here) we do not know, for sure, what is going on at bungie. These issues could, as many believe, be due to a lack of respect for the community’s voice, where they just adjust the game to please streamers and make more eververse sales. That’s an assumption which makes sense, if you view bungie as just another mindless sales grab business. I personally don’t think they’re quite like that, but, what do I know? Another possibility is that, simply, what we see as an issue may in fact be something working as intended (enhancement cores, hint hint). By this I mean we may not like something; that does not mean it’s a bad idea or a stupid feature. There was a game I played once in which players who had bought certain items could ‘imprison’ other players for up to five minutes (if your ‘bounty’ was extreme), based on their ‘bounty’ value, which built up by basically being a nuisance or by breaking laws, eg: speeding. Players with these permissions were able to just rush around, picking up bounties. This did not give them anything in return, but the bounty holder would lose a little bit of time. This, while it was working as was intended, caused many players to complain in similar fashion to how enhancement cores are complained about. Nothing changed. It wasn’t necessary that anything be done; this was a feature and function of the game - just like, say, death in a function in many games. The developers took a “we’ll make sure it’s not exploited, but it’s staying” approach to these complaints. For some of our issues I think Bungie is doing the same. As for explaining gameplay issues (eg: glitches or RNG errors), that’s a lot harder than you think. Developers need to find the cause of a problem from within the entirety of their game; like finding a needle in a field of haystacks. Destiny (and D2) are massive files. A lot of this is graphic data, but it also contains (probably) billions of lines of code, each of which could play a role in causing an issue. I still haven’t reached the point. In order to find and fix such issues, the developer needs to replicate the issue. If an issue is random, that could be very difficult - hence the long periods before they’re fixed. When it comes to some issues, they may be struggling to replicate and solve them, not just totally ignoring them. As for balancing, I haven’t tried it. Maybe that’s harder than I thought, too. I can’t speak for what I don’t really understand. TL;DR: We shouldn’t jump to the conclusion that Bungie is totally ignoring us. There’s a number of reasons (I certainly don’t know them all) that they might not be addressing issues as quickly as we’d like, and that does not mean that they don’t care anymore and can’t be bothered. Give them a chance. For all you know, they’re trying their best. Or you’re all right, and they don’t care anymore. Either way, innocent until proven guilty (of putting business before community, in a community focused game)

It's not just a game with destiny anymore. It's basically a second job. No fun. Full of chore lists and crappy rewards for most of it. The worst part is you can't get paid for it so it's basically voluntary work😭

I stopped at forsaken. You’re part of the 3/5% that never stopped and felt like forsaken was a revolution, similar to TTK. The fact that you were deprived from anything doesn’t make forsaken any good. For the vast majority, forsaken was nothing great. Sure the background is nice, but the content feels the same, underwhelming and quiet void. PS: I read it all, just saying...!

              • Indefinitely feel the wisdom of taking breaks. You really have to to keep enjoying the franchise. It seems as though you may be done for D2. Do you see yourself returning for D3 or are you turned off the franchise for the future?

                • I stopped playing for 18 months when they announced D2 wouldn’t continue from D1 until Forsaken. I still played it a lot but the break made me realise the hamster wheel was something you could cruise on or get off entirely and return whenever you want. Don’t let the game play you.

                • It really is. But when you are really into something and want it to be the best it can be you tend to get sometimes a little unhinged. At least I'm guilty of this.

                • Yeah feel the same way. Loved it, made lots of friends, tried lfg for the first time for D1 raids and was awesome, then things have declined lately, boredom set in and have lost interest in the game.

                  • Agree with pretty much everything you have said and your post is probably summing up the feelings of most of the people left playing in my opinion. I used to feel this absolute need to get everything in the game and chase every single grind that it had to offer, but now I really only log in for the social interaction with friends and the actual gameplay is a side note. I feel like I owe this franchise to an extent as I have met some really good people from playing D1 & D2 but at the moment I have some concerns that this particular iteration has gone as far as it can go, especially as we are unlikely to get a 'COMET' sized content drop for at least another 5 months. I have found that playing more casually has increased my enjoyment to an extent but I understand why a lot of people are feeling burnt out and taking a break.

                  • I think you're right. It's clear for D2, bungie's goal was just to make it playable. Hardly a worthy successor. What an unappetizing cash cow. If year 3 is just an annual pass... Bungie may just collapse under its own weight. D2 has been ugly. I really don't want to do this yet again.

                  • I understand totally lol the one thing I would say is I think forsaken wasn't quite what it should have been. As an "expansion" it should have increased the volume of everything but I feel due to the random rolls and new perks not being available and the pointlessness of old ornaments it's meant the game feels a bit smaller instead of expanded. That might just be me though lol

                  • If you’re ready for a break go for it. I used to play only destiny but recently switched my focus to other games and it’s made destiny more enjoyable tbh. And if you’re burnt out of the game and waiting for change, go find a new hobby and see if the game improves. Your reaction seems like common sense to me

                    • The addiction to play in D1 was real. Gone in D2 these days. I logged hundreds of hours into Crucible alone for a matador and Cryptic with the exact rolls I wanted.

                    • I played my last Destiny March 9 2019. 9,000 hours combined for D1 and D2 and I'm fed up and done. I wasted $60 on a Season Pass that amounts to about $5 worth of drip fed content, compared to other expansions. I didn't like Forge, I don't like Gambit and to play the "Gambit End Game", I'm supposed to grind 7+ month old Strikes, Campaigns, Adventures, patrols and old Crucible maps to level up in +1 increments with terrible RNG and numerous weeks of below current light gear where you get 4+ of the same item in a row. Frankly, Bungie isn't even trying anymore and I'm moving on. I won't be back - regardless of what they do.

                      • Kind of the same for me, although I skipped most of D2 year 1....I think I lasted till about November 2017. That 10 months break was awsome, having no lifed d1 for 3 years lol. Then forsaken landed and it was fking awsome.....now it's just a case of waiting for the next expansion, as I find gambit just aids.

                      • If you were/are addicted, it's definitely for the best to take a small break. As for PvP, handcannons may be most used, but I guarantee most people using them dont know how, especially against weappns that outrange them. Everyone uses them because the raw data suggest it is the most efficient weapon to kill, but if you don't know how to kill to begin with, that means very little comparatively. Sure, some players are incredibly skilled with hand cannons, but that's when you use your knowledge to pick out the ones that aren't as good (missing shots constantly, not landing crits, etc.) and punish them before moving on to the bigger fish with your team if necessary. If you decide to not take a break, hopefully that advice at least helps a little bit until (or if) Luna's gets nerfed.
