As the title says the new progression system could do with a revisit, currently the way it works is:
- Flashpoint, Heroic Story, Heroic Adventure, Strikes, Crucible, Gambit, Ikora and Clan XP rewards all give +5 power items until 520 when it goes down to +1 power.
- Nightfall and Nightfall Score Challenge rewards give +5 power until 540 then +1 power after that.
- Dreaming City weeklies and Challenge rewards give +5 power until 560 then +1 power after that.
So what does this mean?
Firstly it eliminates any choice in the order you do your activities if you want to actually be rewarded, as increases are based on your average power level it's pointless doing any +1 PL activities before doing the +5 ones. If one of your clan-mates jumps on and wants to hit up strikes, tough luck if you haven't cleared the nightfall/dreaming city yet, you either lose out on power or tell them to find someone else.
Secondly it HEAVILY penalizes you if you end up having a large amount of equipment clustered around your average power, with one low item bringing that average down. You can no longer take advantage of any of the +1 power activities unless you first boost that one low piece of gear. This can lead to players falling far behind their peers based purely on the distribution of their drops rather than the effort they put in. For example if my gear is all 522+ and I have a pair of boots at around 215 dragging the average down to 521, all of my +1 gear will drop at 522 making it useless unless I luck out and find a pair of boots.
Thirdly and the biggest issue is players have wasted effort particularly this week, because none of the power level increases are explained anywhere in game. The entire system is left ambiguous with all the rewards being listed identically as "powerful engrams". Bungie needs to show the difference in game between activities that will reward +5 power and +1 power, rather than expecting us to trawl through their twitter feed, blog posts and youtube creators analysis to find the answer.
TL;DR - The tiered power system means once you hit 520 you need to do your +5 PL activities first, punishes players with specific low pieces of gear by denying them rewards and isn't properly illustrated in the UI.

1 ReplySorry but its clear pretty much every dissagrees with you.

2 RepliesGreat explanation! Being FORCED to play a specific way to progress is NOT FUN. It's kind of like some of the activities in D1 that were the only thing that dropped certain things. I hated those... I wouldn't do them and I suffered for it. My light dragged below all my friends and then I was a burden when we tried to do anything difficult. I like to play smart and optimize my time. This helps!!
-
This explains so much... and wish I would have known this before I wasted all my time getting gear +1 above my light level. I thought something was bugged, but this makes sense. Wish I would have ran the +5 events first as it would have actually helped my overall light level then. Sigh.

Your ghost should of chosen someone else..

Bump good info
-
DFC anymore, i just shoot shit and wait.
-
2 RepliesSo grind 1 point increments till 540? That’s bad.
-
19 RepliesYou are a little early for this complaint. The Bungie Fan Club is still in the DLC 'honeymoon' stage so you are just going to get shouted down. Wait another month when the "shiny" has worn off this DLC, then everyone else will be whining about "restricted progression" again.
-
2 Replies541 there’s zero issues with progression. I’m happy it’s not casual like year one of d2 the grind is real and I’m loving it
-
3 RepliesYour mom was unrewarding
-
This is why recovery services exist. People complain about the grind and don’t have the motivation for it but has some money to throw away. It’s a win win for both parties.
-
12 RepliesLol look at all of you casuals complaining that you won’t get max light. It’s about time that Bungie makes max light mean something.
-
5 RepliesYou are over exaggerating. It's not that bad. You get two Prime Engrams a day, Exotic drops are powerful, and you only need to be 520 for the raid, which you should already be by now if you spent more time on the game instead of crying for hand outs on the forums.
-
They should all be at least plus 5 power, I did get a 519 cloak yesterday when my high test was 504 and my max power was 514. I guess it’s based on my max power.
-
1 ReplyI'm 538.... it's about to get extra grindy
-
My highest is very close to 530, honestly just getting here wasn’t bad at all. I do all my activities then grind gambit or quick play for powerful rewards

Edited by DosedPsycho: 9/13/2018 3:59:17 PMIf I can reinstall after 9 months without engaging the bullshit static loot, and still outpace you filthy -blam!-ing casuals while I earn a psych degree because i play smart rather than for hours and hours, THEN THERE'S NOT A DAMN THING WRONG WITH THE PROGRESSION. The new exotics could drop at 2 or 3 percent higher frequency tho, and the 3rd seed of light? What's that about bungo?
-
5 RepliesI just had this issue. Got a 530 arm piece while wearing a 530 arm piece. Wtf! The content is great. Forsaken is great. Power progression after 520 is a f-ing joke.
-
My advice Play the game have fun because in a month you will be bored again 👍
-
4 RepliesDamn I just hit 520 without knowing this shit so now there's no way I'm gunna be raid ready with only +1 shit left. Also Bungie -blam!-ed me out of crucible and gambit powerful rewards reset BECAUSE OF THEIR OWN GLITCH SATURDAY
-
1 ReplyGood write up. I feel filthy casuals (like me) are at an advantage. We don't worry so much about trying to get to whatever level as fast possible. Just play the game and whatever drops, drops. We'll get there, it'll just take longer. But we won't be stressed we won't be tired and we won't be annoyed.
-
3 RepliesNot sure I agree with all this. In the past 2 days, I went up about 7 or 8 light levels to 528 just doing all the typical crap. Bounties, nightfall, strikes, dreaming city activities etc... The game has been out 1 week and 2 days, and I'm light 528. At a constant rate like this, it will be around a month or so for me to hit 600. and this is only my 1st character as well. I don't see how this is a problem. That isn't even alot. and will leave me 2 months before the next expansion with nothing to do in terms of progression. Maybe instead of coming on here and bitching about shit, just play the game?

Bungie needs to show the difference in game between activities that will reward +5 power and +1 power, rather than expecting us to trawl through their twitter feed, blog posts and youtube creators analysis to find the answer.
Agree 100% with this ^^^

9 RepliesHow the hell - Look, YOU'RE NOT GONNA BE TOP LEVEL IN ONE WEEK. What do you mean there's no choice? Prime engrams and exotics drop from anything? Guaranteed drops are from the things that say powerful in the director? You're constraining yourself if you're playing like that. I've been playing with my clanmates on and off and I've never felt any constraining. Unless you're trying to force level yourself up to be raid ready, it's gonna be a grind. Yes, a GRIND. They're not doing y1 d2 again. That stuff got boring real quick. Did people forget how to grind?
-
I disagree. They havent eliminated player choice at all, people can choose to play the game however they want. What they did do is just slow down how fast we level up, which is what a good portion of the community asked for. From your post, it just seems you werent one of those.

16 RepliesEdited by What I Look Like: 9/13/2018 2:44:49 PMPeople think this shit is grinding, that's laughable. All these people need to get into World of Warcraft or Runescape so you can kill 250 wild boars for a set of leather armor or whatever.
