Recently during a match of Iron Banner I got messaged by some random guy just saying that he reported me. I asked why, and he said it was for lagging. This isn’t my fault, my internet is slow a lot of the time, but is usually okay and doesn’t cause issues in PvP. I realise that it can cause issues for other players, but despite those issues, I do not see how I can fix this and can’t see how it would be fair to be banned for having a bad internet connection, which I’m assuming was his intention when reporting me.
EDIT:
Thanks for the replies, after reading a fair few of them and looking into some stuff I’ve got a better understanding of the issue. Just to clarify, when I play the game I do not head into PvP whilst knowingly having a bad connection like some people seem to have thought after reading my original post, I’ll only head into PvP if my connection appears to be good enough to do so.

Apparently you can now. My dad has been banned twice now. Even after buying all the latest updates and downloads. Putting hundreds of hours into the game. He got banned. for 2 weeks during the iron banner. He has the best internet that you can get for his area. Which sucks but its not his fault. That's all that he can get. For a gaming company to punish someone for having bad internet, that is a crock. That should not happen. People buy these games and spend money on them just like everyone else who plays. It would be one thing if someone was cheating. This isn't the case. With that being said, I haven't played destiny in a bout a year or so. I don't care to. Stupid game for doing this. My dad, wont be playing any longer either. They wont get another cent of our money. And they have gotten a couple hundred. The fact that they can do this is ridiculous. Do they expect people to move because they cant get better internet to play a video game? Absolutely stupid thing to do to a paying customer. To many cry babies. Do people think you can play better with lagging internet? It just as bad for the person playing that it is for the people who are affected. Since bungie sees fit to punish the honest players, Neither my dad nor I wont return. I hope this reaches the higher ups because this is how you loose business. Not everyone has fiber wire or cable internet. Some can only get dial up. promised 1.5 mb/s but only getting .8 mb/s. Maybe bungie needs to tweak there games to the working class

some guy said he would report me for having bad internet i think its just him being a sore looser because my internet is fine. what do i do if this happens because i don't have bad connection it's just him being a prick because he lost with zero kills and i was top of the leader board. and i don't want to be banned or anything for something i have not done. i can kinda tell this because my mate i was playing with got top of the leader board next round and he got sent a message from the same guy saying he would report him for bad internet. so i think he is just being a prick. what do i do i he does report me for something i haven't done ?

23 RepliesYes, you can be restricted or banned for bad or unstable connections https://www.bungie.net/en/Help/Article/11929
Additionally, Bungie may issue restrictions or bans to accounts that have consistent unstable connections when playing Destiny, as this negatively impacts other players. For steps on how to stabilize your network and connection quality, please follow the Network Troubleshooting Guide.
You certainly can be punished for having poor internet connection.

4 RepliesAs long as youre not lagswitching, then yes.

It works two ways. The players own connection to the game and the servers software. Right now, d2 servers are just a slightly modified version from d1 servers. So it's new, but at the same time pretty dang old. I pay over 150 dollars for 5g internet but still experience alot of problems connecting to the game personally. So it also is the issue of bungies servers not being up to par in comparison to other games

4 RepliesYes and no... Technically yes they can ban you. Will they? Probably not. The general understanding is that they can check your logs to see how the performance was. If you have had crappy connection from the start it shows a consistent pattern then they most likely wont do anything. However, if you show to have a good strong connection coming into the the game, going to the tower, doing anything PVE, but then suddenly your connection goes to crap in PVP then they may assume you are a dirty dirty lag switcher and punish you accordingly. This is presuming that Bungie would do anything at all in the 1st place.

10 RepliesThis is exactly why i strongly prefer CBMM so i can utilize my good internet that i pay for. Nothing against you personally as I'm sure you're a decent person but i want to enjoy my online experiences to the smoothest degree......Not get frustrated about opposing players not taking damage or teleporting short distances in front of me.

10 RepliesWell I find that extremely disheartening to think that a person could be punished or banned due to their internet connection. Speaking from experience because we live and work within the boundaries of a national park our only option for internet is satellite. So with even the best of times we still cannot matchmake and we never see other players at the tower or any other matchmaking activities unless we have been invited by somebody with a good solid internet connection. Thankfully I have family members that are willing to drag us along so we can get our missions and Strikes and crucible stuff done. To me that just doesn't seem right because we say pay the same price for the games and all the DLC and probably pay a lot more for internet than a lot of other people do since it is satellite

3 RepliesHave you tried openning the router's ports (there are 8)? It worked for me perfectly.

1 ReplyI had someone message me the same and was shocked to find it an actual reason in destiny and got scared. It has been 2 weeks and no ban so I'm assuming multiple reports are needed. I mean I live in Australia, we still have copper wires where I am and my ISP said they won't be changing to fiber for at least 7 years.

1 ReplyI always facepalm when people think lag is god mode. You think it's frustrating not being able to kill someone? Imagine that same thing but for litterally everyone else on the field.

According to the EULA you can be banned for whatever they want you to.
-
It could be the time you play as well and the people in your house using small devices, such as smartphones, laptops, etc, etc.

A Non Bungie Employee here, Teabag Specialist... I answer the questions that Bungie can't, I've seen your question and here's my answer. Hopefully Bungie will check your connection history before they do anything. You could be however subject to temp game bans (having to sit out 20 mins or so) for your internet being slow if Bungie does that. But honestly I don't know if Bungie does that. Opening the ports on your console should/could help... but if your internet provider sucks then you're screwed (I'm looking at you TV Max and pointing the finger, and not just at you). You can go to Bungie Help section, use youtube or google or call your internet provider to help you do that. If you're getting bad internet then nothing you can do will really help you but getting better internet or a higher grade. But it might not hurt just to call your IP to see if there's anything they can do before that. Good Luck and Hi Scoring.

3 RepliesI hope so. I have nothing against you, but a lagger can ruin the experience for all other 7/11 people in the game. I would like to see a timeout added, if the lag persists for X minutes your gone. X number of kicks in a day and you cannot access PVP anymore that day.

Absolutely!

13 RepliesI would not be concerned about it. If they were going to ban or rrestrict players due to internet connection they would need to have and enforce minimum standards. A player's connection can also be negatively influenced by their ever changing matchmaking and the p2p hosting in pvp. If you are not manipulating your connection to the game you have nothing to worry about.
