So there has been a lot of discussion since the summit on the topic of Destiny in regards to casual play vs grind. We've also heard the mantra from Bungie of wanting to return Destiny to the hobby game it was in D1. Since there has been so much written on that including by myself in previous posts I'm not going to go super deep into all of that, but I will reiterate again that while no one is arguing that D2 needed to bring grind and meaning back to the game, there were very real and valid reason as to why the devs felt D2 needed to be a more accessible game and it's important to not throw that away.
We've seen a lot of feedback since Warmind launched on the progression system and how punishing this expansion can be for some players and I think that is a result of changes being implemented that maybe were more stopgap attempts at corrections than what we'll see come the fall, but something that was brought in this week really underscores for me this entire debate and the heart of Destiny's grind vs accessible play as well as what Bungie needs to consider while working to make the game a true hobby.
This latest patch introduced changes to the Faction Rally system as we all know and it was another change that has been very polarizing in the community. I had a discussion this morning on twitter with a couple of players about the topic with myself being of the opinion that these changes feel like a job to me and I don't really feel any desire to go grind a faction and them taking the side of it's just 8 or so hours of grind if you really focus in and that's not so bad.
Again that to me is not a hobby, it is a job and it's not how I want to or enjoy playing Destiny. I have no issue with having grinds for things in the game and I hear the argument of whether or not it is okay to have things in the game that some players may never get. I don't have an issue with that per say if the things are accessible to everyone who put in the time or do the activity required to get those things, but a comparison was made this morning between grinding the Factions and doing the exotic sword quests in D1 and there is a very big fundamental difference there that sits at the heart of all of this.
Yes the sword quests were very long and involved and could be punishing, but they were something players could work on at their own pace and a goal they could steadily or in bursts build towards. To me THAT was Destiny as a hobby. The same could be said for hidden ghosts and fragments and to a lesser degree things like grinding rep for Queen's gear. I say lesser degree because that was something that started way too limited in how much we could do a week (much like the issues progressing in Warmind) and could be way too punishing on the RNG nature of the drops (again looking at Warmind), with the combination of both leading to an experience that was more frustrating than fun when another week passed without any real progress for time invested.
Bungie wants D2 to be a hobby again, but things like putting limits on how much we can do or progress in a week directly contradict the hobby philosophy and the way Faction rallies have been set up also completely flies against that. The biggest problem is the switch to it being a week long event 3 times a season. Suddenly where in D1 I could go at my pace and get the swords when it fit in with my schedule and when my life allowed me to really sink into that grind. With the system now, if we want things from all 3 factions, we now have one week to rank up and get everything we want from each one and that was the danger of making our faction choices account based and then tying unique drops like exotic ornaments and weapon catalysts to the factions.
It's a turn off for me (and a lot of my friends) and one I'm not going to break my neck to achieve, but this also brings up a second point that I think is a very important discussion to have in regards to hobby and grind, particularly with the upcoming return of weapon randomization and what that might mean.
Gjallerhorn.
It was the first real chase and grind for a lot of players and to me it kinda summed up the origins of that Destiny as hobby experience, but one of my best friends played the hell out of Destiny in year one... raids, strikes, nightfalls... and didn't get the Gjallerhorn until the week before TTK and what happened then? It was nerfed and suddenly made irrelevant and for all the great things about the hobby aspect of D1, it was constantly undone by that gear being left behind and unless that changes I don't see people ever fully investing in D2 like they did back then.
I chased a 3rd Eye Coiled Hiss all throughout TDB, finally got one days before HoW dropped and it didn't ascend. I spent an entire day grinding glimmer and mats to re-roll a perfect primary scout in HoW and it got left behind with TTK. Then everything I invested time into the last 2 years... the exotic sword quests, the raids, the Queen's gear, Iron Banner, exotic faction quests... It all got left behind with D2 and that's the real rub here.
If we are going to be tasked with having time-limited events to obtain things that require us to completely dedicate ourselves to playing like it's a job and getting things done in that time frame, is that gear going to stay relevant or is it once again going to be left behind with the fall expansion of eventual release of Destiny's next step (that hopefully isn't followed by a number)?
If this is all temporary then I don't see the reason for the investment. I'll still play the game and do the things I enjoy either solo or with my friends, but that hobby aspect of logging in to work towards completing things like faction rallies is diminished. I just last week finished the Forge weapon quests and got the last one and my Sagira shell and it felt REALLY good to accomplish and I love the shell, but if I had a limited time to to do that I just wouldn't have it.
We also have weapon randomization coming back in the fall and we don't know what that means yet, but I can say when we were giving feedback at the summit on random rolls, the last feedback I gave on the topic is that if we were to go back to a system where you may or may not get the exact weapon you want or it may take you a long time to get it because RNG, that those weapons need to stay relevant and not get left behind like they have in TDB, TTK and D2.
Destiny can be a true hobby game and it can have depth of experience and things we have to grind for and work towards, but it can also do it in ways that are healthy and respect the time and lives of the players without turning the hobby into a chore or a job. Feeling like we have to grind 10 hours of Public Events and Lost Sectors isn't a hobby and if we do that job and the end reward becomes irrelevant in 3 months or a year, that isn't respecting our time and investment.
Whatever side of this issue and debate you fall on, I hope this has painted a clearer picture on the subject as a whole and we can work to find ways to make this a game that everyone can pick up and play when and how they want, while still being rewarding for those who want to really invest themselves. Thank you.

Edited by Grimnir2001: 6/12/2018 5:34:52 AMIf you really look at it in an objective way its hard to understand why weapons and gear dont make the same journey as our guardian does. As you said ,we grind to get them , and when we aquire them a lot are left behind,or get reintreduced a long the line, wich leaves a bad taste in your mouth. For players that invest a lot of time on Destiny its a frustrating experience i imaging. I am not that bothered but some friends left because of this regrinding for the same things. Its like you said ,it doesnt make youre time investement feel respected, it becomes a chore that turns you off. Dont grasp the filosophy behind that idea. Cheers.

19 RepliesEdited by SleepyDragon: 6/8/2018 9:59:24 PMI think the core of this matter is, as you said, it's a difference between a hobby vs a job. And i think this all came about because of the summit. Bungie panicked because a lot of streamers stopped covering D2. Bungie met with them privately. Changes were made to make the game more difficult and exciting. Problem with that is twofold. One, the streamers probably make up about 10% of the Destiny community, and two, it is their job. They literally make a living by sitting on their cans playing games for 8 hours a day. But they don't represent the rest of us. People who work 40-50 hours a week, and have families. People who game for fun, not work.
-
1 ReplyI agree with a lot of what you said here, Sols. Work vs Fun. Warmind has turned much of what I've enjoyed about D2 into work. I think when you look at the progression system changes, heroic strikes, new modifiers (black out) and the faction rally changes, I've lost all interest in this game... because the fun is gone. It's just chore after chore after chore. Case and point... during faction rally, I can't even go on a patrol without dealing with some kind of nonsensically punishing debuff. Goodness, I just want to casually shoot some stuff after a day of work. Why does it need to be an unnecessary challenge? Maybe I want to play EP without the stupid debuff. It's honestly a little crazy. I literally have only played D2 for 20 min this week because of faction rallies. I just hate almost everything about it. Normally, I would be playing 2 hours per day.

9 RepliesI understand that some players wanted more grind added. What we got instead is RNG. If you have an activity that has a reward of a gun that is powerful and desirable and you give it a very low drop rate people will grind that activity to get the gun. Over and over. Because it’s RNG some people will get it their first run. If it’s low enough drop rate some people won’t get it until their 300th run. The problem is that nothing in that activity changes. You get a strat to speed run it and maybe each run is quick and that’s good. But it’s still the exact same enemies spawning in the exact same place over and over until you fight the same boss in the same arena with the same mechanic over and over. I don’t think the people who want a grind actually want to do that. Playing the exact same content over and over for hours until you get “lucky” isn’t fun or rewarding end game. They want a reason to invest time playing the game each week. That’s what Bungie needs to aim for. RNG isn’t a good solution, it’s a lazy one.

5 RepliesEdited by Northern: 6/9/2018 2:02:14 PMI sink a ridiculous amount of hours into the game at present. My own opinion, and speaking with others, is Destiny has become too grind focused.

5 RepliesAt the Summit, was there talk of how Seasons don't seem to work at all? They on surface seem like another gimmick to get people to spend money on Eververse. Your rewards are only around for a limited time, better spend the money. Hopefully Forsaken drops this Seasons model in favor of a more traditional experience. It simply doesn't work. Faction Rallies wouldn't even be an issue if the rewards and progress wasn't limited to a 3 month window. It punishes people like me, this time of year is my prime time for OT and between work and family, gaming comes last.

2 RepliesOne thing i'd like to know is, why the hell they felt the need to remove the purchase of armor after so many packages turned in. I recently jumped from PS4 to PC, I knew i'd have to grind out the gear I wanted - fine, I can deal with that. I had a plan for this faction rally of only hitting rank 10 on my 3 characters(each) and then using the other 20 ranks to buy the armor/grind out the ornaments. I was annoyed when that was also changed the last IB we had, it made me lose interest quickly...of course, I got a bit upset for choosing NM(again) while somehow forgetting I don't have Sweet Business yet haha. Plus, I started two days late, because the Power Supply in PC decided to die, the day before FR started and I thought I was going to miss out. But, keeping to topic. I do completely agree with you, D2 feels like a job, rather than a hobby...I was hoping to earn everything - for whatever reason that escapes me hah!.

18 RepliesEdited by CatMan: 6/9/2018 5:08:16 AMI really hope the progression system is fixed in the next DLC. I won't hit max until late July at this rate. Edit: oh and I'm a solo player.

I completely agree with the comment about swords being at your own pace... Random rolls means I can chase something that will add to my loadout for PvP or PvE and it’s not very challenging compared to a raid or Trials... that means my hardcore friends will be happy to hangout with me and we can achieve things together... If they want to go do trials or Raids their time with me has been worthwhile and we all get a sense of achievement and drive to play. I might even try a raid or trials every now and then... and I’ll be ready. Getting the same $&@% from strikes and PvP (not competitive) was a complete turnoff for D2 for me. Instant dismantle took away the depth. For me, I am excited by the depth increase planned for D2. I’m interested in Destiny again. <3

12 RepliesWarmind is a Band-Aid..and shouldn't be compared to Destiny 1. ..and there is a reason why many casual players and solo players are getting irritated with the changes that Bungie has made. At its core, Destiny (1) is a loot-based game. The replayability of loot-based games is rooted in HORIZONTAL progession. Destiny 1 was the rewarding game it was (despite a relatively lack of content) because random rolls, a DEEP pool of perks of which many were powerful and game altering created a long tail of horizontal progression that kept players playing every day. Long after the novelty of the content had worn off. Bungie BROKE that when they went all-in for competitive balance in the design of Destiny 2. When they made that announcement I said here that they were playing with dynamite...and that if they didn't handle that change properly, that they would blow up the game. They didn't..... ...and they did. In fact they doubled-down on breaking the end-game power-progression by not only going to fixed rolls...but nerfing the perk pool into the ground as well. So instead of seeing the game as a finely balanced campaign shooter. They created a game that the community saw as having a broken end-game...a broken loot system...with a lootpool a mile-wide and an inch deep. Bungie knows that they can't rebuild these systems to win back the hardcore player before fall. But they wanted to keep those players in the game to simplify the marketing of Foresaken. So someone got the brilliant idea to compensate for the game's lack of HORIZONTAL progression by THROTTLING the game's vertical progression. Problem....such efforts often backfire on the devs. Because the roadblocks that they throw up trying to slow down the hardcore players and no-lifers, is nothing more than speed bump to these playesrs. BUT IT CAN BECOME A BRICKWALL TO AVERAGE PLAYERS who don't have the deep wells of time throw at the problem of circumventing progression barriers. As a result, Bungie broke the game (temporarily) in the other direction. Throttling progression so hard that basically (for 2 weeks) there was basically nothing to do after completing about two hours of game play....unless you raided or played Trials. I can see how Faction Rally would also be annoying to more casual players because its gone from this event that you could pillage for tokens with realtively easy cheeses.....and that would shower you in loot. To this serious progression grind to unlock a small number of ornaments and weapons. But at the end of the day, I think Bungie realizes that they let the pendulum swing too far back the other way. Which is why they patched the broken mid-game by letting you grind Heroic strikes to 365....and why the nerfed Escalation Protocol to make it more accessible.
-
2 RepliesThe problem I have with how Bungie handles feed back is that they always tend to swing the balance too far. I get that people thought that progression in D2 was too easy, but now Bungie has made it more frustrating for people who can't devote every spare moment to the game by tying rapid progression to the two least played activities. And if this stays the case when light matters in Iron Banner when the Forsaken comes, I foresee more disheartened players in the future. I like the changes to the faction rally except for the one pledge per account. When people asked for faction rallies to have meaning, I don't think this is what they had in mind. Another example of Bungie taking things to the extreme. Let me pledge all three factions like I always have and I'd be happy.
-
1 ReplyI really don't like the time gated events. It has come to the point where I don't play to grind for the timed rewards. I know with my scheduled and me being a lone wolf I wont get most of those Items. For example the faction rewards. Its going to take me three event to get the sunshot ctl. I don't have time to grind this week to get it, and GL for the next event. Right now for FWC I am at rank 27. I wont have time this weekend to hit rank 50. Tokens should drop from completing any and everything in the game without increasing the amount of tokens needed to level up. Patrols included. Then you have the progression system. It is brutal to solo players. Im excited for forsaken and at the same time I'm nervous. Nervous that there wont be much for me to go out and do on my own, nervous about time gates, and about the progression system. Bungie had It fine in Roi.
-
11 RepliesLike i have stated in these forums before on numerous occasions, Bungie does not know how to aim at the middle.
-
3 RepliesSols, credit where credit is due, I did hail you and Kelly as the king and queen of the shitposters, but tbh you made some good points. It seems even the most loyal fanboys are starting to get irritated by the constant changes to the game, as it tries to find its identity, which means it is playable for the masses but rewarding for very few. Hate to say it but Destiny just hasnt been able to evolve and retain its fans at the same time, which shows Bungie made some dumb decisions, whch to be fair were prob a result of a limited time window. D1 vendor system meant they were current for a lot longer, and they couldve added ornaments into that system easily imo. Faction rally is about as exciting as a free stay at Bill Cosbys lol
-
Speaking for myself I am out of town 4 days a week and the three I am home can't necessarily be devoted 100 percent to Destiny (life, wife, kids and their activities). So when an event like this comes up its hard to go the distance with it and get the rewards from it. I usually try to knock out my milestones but just for one of my three characters. I had been doing the faction rally thing but it was getting to the point it was so grindy (real word?) That it wasn't even enjoyable. I'll sit there sometimes ready to hang my hat up then feel like if I don't go ahead and commit I'll miss out. It's an awkward scenario for sure. Whenever I take a break from Destiny and I start considering getting back into it these are the moments that seem to stand out. Usually after these memories come to the surface as it plays out in my head I lose interest before even logging in again. I feel like this shouldn't be the impact a supposedly 10 year game should have on its player base.
-
My issue with destiny is that everything is timed. I wouldn't mind grinding to Rank 50 over the course of the entire season, I could do it at my own pace. But it I am busy with life when faction rally comes around I miss out. Its bullshit.

Edited by Razzupaltuff: 6/10/2018 2:38:01 PMTL;DR: Bungo said they wanted to make Destiny a hobby again, but in fact they turned it into a full time job. I am at rank 96 with Dead Orbit right now. Trying to get full DO Titan armor for at least 40 ranks. Never got the leg armor to drop. Helmets, chest armor, gauntlets left and right. Bungo are ret*rded a$$holes who do not learn from the past. Not going to buy the Forsaken expansion. 70 bucks for an expansion? That's more than the money for a full game. Bungo obviously laughs at their customers' idiocy when putting such a price tag on this overhyped as usual crap of theirs. Seen it too often already.

24 RepliesEdited by Unforgiven: 6/8/2018 11:41:18 PMI absolutely hate this current faction Rally, and making our guardians weaker is not the answer to making the game hard. Make it hard in other ways by giving enemies insane abilities that you need to avoid. But good players can still get the job done by using cover and etc. I am doing this faction rally as a Titan and having a pretty tough time of it. In two days of grinding I barely got 5 levells. There is no way I will be able to unlock all the faction rallies. And I have a life and don't want to play this like a Job. Bungie went overboard with this. Level 50, are you -blam!-ing kidding me?
-
I have a job, sometimes 24/7 due to emergencies. I love Destiny, love to grind, but hate time gated grind. Having a week to grind of level 50 of a faction just isnt possible this week, for me. So then I have to make a choice on which catalyst/ornaments I can do without. Its also possible I may only be able one faction to 50 depending on work. In not here complaining, I don't care enough to do that, just stating facts as they affect me.
-
Edited by Unforgiven: 6/12/2018 2:13:18 AMI managed to finish the faction rally, this grind left me with an empty feeling. I think I am going to play other games, and come back in September. This grind was awful and i can't force myself to play anymroe Destiny 2 right now https://twitter.com/Shiftyguns?lang=en

Spot on post sir

15 RepliesOr, if you don't enjoy an activity don't play it. I think it is a fairly simple solution. Now to the nonsense of play time investment, unless there has been a change, I cannot fathom how someone could not put aside 4, maybe 5 hours over the course of 3 - 5 weeks (1 week per faction rally event) to unlock everything from a faction. There is a difference between something not being possible for an "average" player, and you not being able to get your instant gratification.
-
If you feel the faction Rally grind is a job then you are not enjoying the game. Thats a personal thing. I have really enjoyed farming this with friends or on my own. Lost Sectors feel great and how they should have felt from the start. A small dungeon that you have to be careful in. Its really not a huge grind over the week to get 50 packages. I have a full time job and its now Saturday and i'm up to 38. I'll get it done by Tuesday easy. I might not get all ornaments on all characters but ill get the rewards and catalyst. With the milestones; It was actually very similar in destiny 1, we had weekly objectives that gave high level rewards. The only difference was being able to grind strikes. I'm glad they haven't adopted this in D2 as it was ridiculous that people were over levelled for release of raids because they grinded strikes. I think they are likely to tweak this system for next year to address your concerns. I dont agree that War-mind is punishing at all. There is nothing wrong with not being max level in the first week. I think the weapon chase is coming back to an extent with both rare EP guns and the catalysts for each exotic. You cant state you enjoyed the exotic sword quest then in the same breath complain about only having one week to to faction rally. That was the most time gated quest in Destiny, maybe other than the sleeper. I can agree that I prefer not to be time gated in progression but its not a punishing system and you can progress to your level of dedication quite easily.

I love how every time I mute you your posts come right back. Suspicious as -blam!- if you ask me.

Idk. This the first faction ralley I'm excited to play! The changes directly correlate to the Communities' requests of the event. I wouldn't change it. I'm 52. Four kids under the age of fourteen. Blue collar. I like the grind and found it fun! I've stayed up late each nite ( D1 style late nites). Lvl 50 went fairly quick. My arcstrider arms and chest ornament progression seem to be buggy. That's something to complain about. Cosmology kills for Graviton -- might be something to complain about. If bungie doesnt bring forth Y1 guns in D2... Clear case for complaint depot. But faction ralley complaints just reaffirms how soft this Community has become.

people play the game ..how THEY want.....THEY ... themselves
