Thoughts on tiered Trials

I have been saying this for a long time. Trials matchmaking should run in tiers and reset weekly or monthly. Here's how tiers and matchmaking could work: After a reset, everyone is in the same pool with zero flawless completions. Once you go flawless once you jump up a tier, this allows more people to go flawless as toward the end of the cycle the better players would have gone flawless already giving lower skill players / people with less time to "get gud" a chance to get flawless against others that haven't gone flawless for the period. Then the second tier could be players that have gone flawless 1-3 times or something like that, third tier 4-7 times, fourth tier 7-10 times, and a fifth tier for 10+ times flawless for the period. Then after a week or month (month would probably be better) Trials is reset and everyone goes back to the 0 flawless pool to start again. This way if you can get to tier 3 and run into people that are better and have trouble getting past tier 3, after reset you can again go flawless. Rewards / Loot: Here is where I'm sure I'll get some disagreement, but here we go. Instead of getting gear for a number of wins (5 for armor, 7 for guns) they could give gear for completing each tier, you go flawless once and complete tier 1, you get Trials loot. You get your 3rd flawless for the period, congrats, here's some Trials loot. Go flawless 7 times, HOORAY MORE TRIALS LOOT!! Get your 10th flawless, yep you guessed it, more Trials loot. Then, in true Destiny spirit, if you can go flawless an 11th time or more, it gives you a CHANCE at getting the elusive "GOLDEN SCARAB EMBLEM OF ETERNITY". Oh, and some more Trials gear. Completing each tier could give you a unique emblem that shows off how far you have gotten in Trials in the past, so once you go once, you get the tier one emblem, 3 times, tier 2 emblem, etc. The only one that would be RNG'd would be the 10+ wins, gotta keep that old Destiny spirit alive with the game of chance somewhere. They could even use the same gear for rewards for each tier and put different skins on the weapons or armor for completing each tier. This would be a way to show off your skill without getting rewards that give players even more of a competitive advantage. If only high skill players go flawless and flawless rewards give better weapons / armor, those players who can go flawless without the better weapons have even more of an advantage if they get "OP" gear for being the only ones that go flawless. I wouldn't even be opposed to the 10+ win gear having the extra "Adept" perk of second wind or something like that, which gives you a slight advantage over people who have the "regular" version, but not so much that they are unstoppable. Before people start saying, "but I couldn't even go flawless once in D1, how am I supposed to do it 10 times in a month to get the "GOLDEN SCARAB EMBLEM OF ETERNITY"? Here's the secret, not everyone is supposed to get the "GOLDEN SCARAB EMBLEM OF ETERNITY", it is for the top tier of players so they can show off that they are indeed the top tier. I feel this may also mitigate some of the paid carries. Who is going to want to sit with someone carrying them through Trials to get them to 10 flawless runs?? It would take too much time. I think people would settle into their tiers eventually and be more ok with not getting the top tier stuff as they are able to get the same gear, it just looks different. If needed the number of wins for flawless could also be adjusted since it will take a lot more playing to get to Tier 5 Trials, but that is kind of the point of having different skins on loot and emblems, so those players that put in the time can show that they have put in the time and effort to get where they are in the Trials ranks. I do get that at some point people will have to play out of their tier, like if there aren't enough people in a tier to get matches in a reasonable amount of time. Best example of this would be the first people to complete each tier, if you are the first flawless for the period, there would be nobody in tier 2 yet so you could still be matched with tier 1 opponents until there are enough in tier 2 to get matchmaking to run efficiently. I get that it throws off the balance a little bit but once Trials got going everyone would kinda settle into their tiers. Anyone with any other thoughts or ideas?? I have thought about this many times in attempting to get my first flawless, I can't quite get there, and have always wanted to have competitive matches in Trials, but when I play it we either curb stomp the team we are playing, or get our arses handed to us. I think this tier system could make Trials more fun for a wider range of players. Post your thoughts below. Edit: Some people seem to think I'm suggesting that they need to make Trials easier, that is not what I'm suggesting, the idea behind what I'm saying is making Trials more viable to more of the player base while still allowing highly skilled players to have an area to go to test their skill in the higher tiers.

  • PvP for loot in general is a bad idea IMO. But each to their own. Tier systems are the way to go to keep things competitive.

    • Only one change needs to happen, to deal with paid carry d bags. If you or anyone one on your card goes flawless it kicks you into a second tier where you only play others who have also been on a flawless card. This would take care of most the issues with streamers and paid carries. There are still account recovery but that's got to be a small percentage.

            • Nope this is silly it would make it so it isn't the same difficulty to actually go flawless this is the kind omg you tried here is a participation trophy attitude that should stay out of gaming. trials is the place to test your skill. if you cant take the heat then go play skirmish. I see you are a virgin hmu this weekend and we will play twitch.tv/krispykremeil

                • Nope. The challenge is appropriate. It makes going flawless feel really good and actually meaningful. It's incredibly tough but it makes victory that much sweeter.

                      • No. Trials is not about being fair. Trials is not about giving everyone a chance. Trials is about weeding out the bad and showing off the best. Trials is about victory over the loss of others. Any idea that would make Trials more accessible for more people is a wrong idea. You're trying to take away the identity of Trials. Why do you think the people who like Trials like it so much? It's not the stomping that we like. It's the threats that we run into, where we have to fight with all we have to push past. Secondly: how would we help our friends? How would we be able to play with our friends if they haven't played enough to reach our rank that week yet. How would be we be able to play with friends that haven't played in ages? What you're describing is not a ranking system that works with team play.

                          • Trials is already the tiered pvp experience. Two tiers, either you can do it, it you can't. The end.

Its not like Trials just came out and everyones trying it You either play it or don't. There's not really a middle ground

Not sure about tiers as related to the current knockout format though that might prove hard for Bungo to implement! Wouldn't surprise me if they eventually go more down the OW route of having seasons and ToO or 'Trails of the Nine' as it's being rebranded is accessible all the time! Especially given they have talked about a 'competitive' play list! It would probably make sense to have the PVP end game mode available all the time cos then Bungo would get more exposure from streamers etc! Also it brings it more in line with the PVE end game raid which is accessible all the time upon release! Whether they could implement a tier system into that format, I guess we'll have wait see what September brings! Interesting post though! Gd work! :)

                                          • I'm gonna try to math a little bit of this, so based off of this weekends trials 14% of players were able to go flawless(leaving out the variable of people going flawless on multiple accounts which actually makes the end number even lower) that would mean on a tier system 28754 players would be tier one, assuming the trend of 14% for each bracket there would be 4025 for tier 2, 563 for tier 3, 79 for tier 4 and a whopping 11 for tier 5, wait times for tiers would be outrageously long to find a match and after trials hype died down after it comes out splits a chuck of the player base into separate Playlist making match times longer, it just wouldn't work

                                              • Here's how Trials should've worked from the beginning. Set loadouts for weapons and armors. Tiered brackets based off k/d & win ratio. 7 wins w/ 0 losses nets trip to Lighthouse and better loot. 7 wins and losses still earns trip but lower tiered weapon rewards.
