Like everyone, I've been watching and reading everything I can regarding Destiny 2. One issue that is in the forefront of my mind is the issue of character carry over. I've spent so much time with my characters that to see them left behind really hurts. But I can understand why leaving characters behind is being pondered -- Bungie would like to have players new to Destiny 2 start at the same relative standing as existing players.
I have a plot line that I'll briefly outline here that I hope Bungie is following. Basically, the model is Dunkirk.
The existing Guardians would have fight a battle like Six Fronts but this time we lose and to survive we have to leave everything behind. The existing guardians would retreat to someplace safe, maybe Europe, maybe Zurich, and we would then be forced to fight our way back to retake the City. Along the way we would scavenge for new weapons and armor as we did in the first missions in Destiny 1. Along the way maybe some of the weapons we find would be replicas of the ones we lost in the retreat. Any guardians new to Destiny 2 would be found and revived in a different location, maybe right around the retreat point, say around Berlin, and their first mission would be to find a weapon and ship and make their way to Zurich -- same story just a different start point.
I can imagine the final scene in the City or the Tower going something like this:
Ghost: "There are too many of them! The battle is lost! We have to retreat. I can get you out but at a cost."
Guardian: "What cost?"
Ghost: "You have to leave everything behind. All weapons and armor."
Guardian: "Why?"
Ghost: "I can't carry you and the weapons and armor. I have enough local storage capacity for you but not you and the weapons and armor. You make the choice -- stay here and fight and die or leave everything here and retreat to fight another day. We can replace the weapons and armor but I can't replace you. Decide now."
Guardian: "Ok. Do it!"
It makes sense if you think of the Ghost as a processor with very little local storage but high bandwidth back to a central database. Its local storage is big enough to so that it can regenerate the guardian from a scan taken at the time of death. After a revive, it flushes the guardian image and then accesses the db for the armor and weapons in inventory. The items in inventory are the first level cache in the ghost and the vault is the active database.
If that link was destroyed or the database lost then it would only be able to image the guardian and then get out of Dodge. The guardian would then be responsible for finding weapons and armor as we did in the first missions.
One interesting side effect of this is that existing guardians could be given a special mission as some point to recover all of their legacy gear from backup of the tower database. The special mission would be analogous to the mission to the Siva replication center at Site 6 but this time we would be restoring the datalinks between the database in tower that the ghost accesses and the off site storage. (Maybe Felwinter Peak and the Iron Temple is the City's Iron Mountain. Lord Shaladin did say that records were stored there.)

It wont happen if everything is new if characters do carry over it will be like the transition we had from year 1 to year 2- all recent gear being useless and the power system being changed to something new Ex year 1 had attack and defense to the light level system Watch this video it goes in more details https://youtu.be/C6jcDgNpdxE Ex if Destiny 2 have new classes and abilities characters with old things would be obsolete when the enemies will be basically be stronger than your abilities and characters can't handle. So really why do you want old stuff.. its better to have a new experience it is a new game not an expansion

3 RepliesChances are clear. If I'm not carried over, I'll be making as close to the same character as I can again.

2 RepliesThe ghost can carry a sparrow, I'm 90% sure it can carry a few guns... Regardless, Bungie has mentioned Destiny 2 will be a whole new game. Chances are your character will not be carried over, and the story of Destiny 2 will take place either far after or far before Destiny 1. You will start off with a new character, as this levels the playing field and Bungie wants new players to have a fresh start. There is a decent probability that Destiny 2 will take place before the collapse, in a golden age.

I just saw this post on Reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/5t7jr3/i_still_want_a_true_horde_mode/) This would work perfectly with a horde mode ending!

No character carry over, everything else can go. No D2.
-
I don't want ANYTHING to carry over. Look at my game time for the little kids screaming they put too much into their characters!! I want all NEW gear and I want to recreate characters with more customization options.
-
Why do characters need to carry over?
-
3 RepliesD2 needs to be a fresh start...plain and simple
-
They're going to honor your achievements from Destiny 1 somehow but let's be honest, we need a completely fresh start.
-
1 ReplyI don't like the idea of using the same guns from start to finish. I don't mind them bringing a select few through
-
Or we could just walk in the footsteps of a new guardian
-
wouldn't mind if its a reset but i would like a shader or an emblem or something cosmetic to show my achievements, say a shader for getting platinum in the first game.

Edited by PushedBean764: 2/10/2017 10:11:27 AMTo me, it seems likely Destiny 2 will be a complete refresh, while giving legacy players a bunch of exclusive content, most of it being locked if you haven't completed all the end game activities at least once (account based), and something super special for those loyal players who have max grimoire for their console's version. And character customization may have completely different and twice as many faces/feature/markings/colours, with some extra options to choose from, like facial hair and body types.

1 ReplyItd be bs if we cant carry over characters since sony still has a monopoly on the jade rabbit and zen meteor. Not to mention the armor sets and the crucible maps and the strike.
