I don't understand why they're not. They don't teach people how to look after their own bodies, oh but solving for X now that's so important.
A fitness class would introduce people to weight training so more people would get into it on their own. A lot of skinny or even overweight guys want to go to the gym but choose not to because they feel scared/intimidated/uneducated on the subject and don't want to make themselves look like an idiot if they ever do go on their own.
Of course it might also help with obesity too. Plus weight training is probably the best activity for relieving stress, and seeing results also helps boost confidence, another thing that lacks in the youth of today.
And for God's sake, there needs to be a nutrition class in high school with up to date information. Most people are still basing their diets off fad information and myths made up from 30 years ago. "Dietary fat makes you fat," "saturated fats and cholesterol cause heart attacks," "grain products are healthy sources of carbohydrates." These are all untrue statements yet these myths are so popular they've almost come to the point where they're common sense. Nothing but misinformation (I'll probably get attacked by a bunch of people about this, especially by the Vegans). Following this information will actually make you even worse and even more prone to disease.

I honestly think that if you are an athlete in high school you should be excused from gym or any fitness class. There's just literally no point in taking gym when you already are getting in shape from sports. With nutrition, schools need to eliminate the my.gov food pyramid out of their curriculums. Every single health class I took the unit on nutrition was based on that freakin' pyramid and it has false information on it. Grains should NOT be the focus of someone's diet like the food pyramid claims. It also tries to alienate all fats away from people's diets, which isn't good either. There are some healthy fats out there that are good to consume.

It is in Illinois

It was at my old HS.

It is in PA or at least I think

It is in the state of Missouri. We're one of the healthiest states in the union.

6 RepliesDietary fats contain lipids... Which make you fat. Cholesterol and saturated fats build up on artery walls causing coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attacks and death. Grain foods are high in protein and carbohydrates and they're good for you.
-
2 RepliesI figured it already was.. At least it was for my old school.

1 ReplyBack in my day, can confirm that shit was required to graduate.

6 RepliesI'd rather take an engineering and language class. I play sports and workout everyday and so does almost everyone that attends my school, in my opinion this would be a waste of time, resources, and money.
-
4 RepliesI'd argue for adding in at least a couple or so home-ec type classes. Sewing and cooking skill especially.
-
1 Replyyou want people to be healthy? you need to artificially regulate the prices of the free market so that healthy food is cheap and junk food/fast food is expensive.
-
2 RepliesPhysical activity should definitely have more focus but in all honesty high school should teach things that actually prepare people for real life like economics, business, taxes, banking, personal finance, and voting/political processes.
-
1 ReplyI seem to recall such a class being required to graduate. But who knows. Maybe things have changed in the last four years or so.

Edited by ColumboWormGod: 5/14/2016 5:05:56 PMThat's because solving for x as you call it, will help in about 99% of jobs. Fitness will help but not more than math or English. Edit: I do know things like PE classes got it all wrong. Kids love to participate in games like dodgeball, capture the flag, and other games. But they make people play other things and do stuff no one wants to do, so they end up not participating.

1 ReplyThe physical education in schools is garbage. The don't teach us to take care of our bodies, they just tell us to play some sport and that's it.
-
Did you mean: Gym
-
2 RepliesThem 'untrue statements' were actually all true. Weight training for someone under sixteen causes complications in later life.
-
It's just be a class people take for easy credits, like all PE classes offered
-
One might wonder why you would name an alt "My main is bant"

1 Reply> OP wants mandatory gym. > OP ridicules math. > Therefore, OP neither has a job nor an IQ above 70.
> It's just a prank, please don't hurt me.
Just cuz they have a class for it doesn't mean people will learn anything from it, or apply whatever they learn. Obese people are that way by choice and you can't force them to change their lifestyle. It's just natural selection.
