When did you feel the happiest?

High school

Honestly, I think I was happiest in high school. College offered a lot of freedom, but I was overloaded with anxiety and trepidation about my future, so I wasn't able to enjoy it as much as I could have. I had some good times, and it was the most freedom I'll ever have combined with the least responsibility I'll ever have, but because it was such a crucial make-it-or-break-it crossroads in my life, I didn't appreciate any of that at the time. I spent most of college worried and depressed about my future. The real world (post-college) is just an endless series of monotony and paychecks. You're finally given all the freedom you dreamed about when you were a kid, but, cruelly, you don't have any time to enjoy it because you're always working. When you do finally have some vacation time, all you want to do is sleep. In comparison, high school was a much more carefree time for me. I could have been more outgoing and confident than I was, but there was none of the existential worry and nagging sense of responsibility that I cope with today. It was a simpler time. All I had to do was show up to school. All of my friends were on the same schedule, so it wasn't difficult to organize activities with them. We all had lunch & recess at the same time. We all had pretty much the same classes, minus a handful of electives, just divided between honors and non-honors sections. It was a simpler life. I really miss it. Just the other day, I questioned another poster for reminiscing about high school, but now I see where he was coming from. Not to mention the fact that I never had any issues with depression until halfway through college, once I truly realized what was actually in store for my future and what would be required of me to get where I wanted in life. I've now struggled with the disorder for several years, with no end in sight, and it's probably going to be a lifelong issue. I had none of those problems in high school. I was happy, secure in my identity, and (at least toward the end of high school) confident in my own skin. Then one day, you finally get where you've always wanted to be in life... and you find that it's not all it's cracked up to be.

  • Between High school and getting a Job. Since then, everything I have ever wanted to do has had to take an extreme back seat as I got stuck in this extremely time consuming job. My bills are paid, but my dreams are dead. I swore to never become this, and now I am the very thing I hate. I had this dream of doing so much good for the world, now I barely have time to talk to my wife. I dont want to die, but I would love a mulligan. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Im a p*ssy, I know.

  • As a senior in high school, I'm scared shitless. I have a good idea on what I want to do with my future (AFROTC), but honestly, high school is heaven. It's a shitty cesspool full of dramatic people, and 6/8 AP classes means I do have responsibilities, but I gotta say... High school, especially senior year, have been some of the best times of my life, even if I'm so young. I had a dream that it was the last week of school and it was depressing. The thought of barely ever talking to or hanging out with my close friends, never running with my teammates ever again, some of which I've had so many experiences with over 4 years, in about a month is terrifying. Time is simply flying and I can't sit and smell the roses. From what my older siblings and my parents have told me, I'll never talk to most high school friends after college starts. I'll also make much closer friends in college, they say. And with social media, it's much easier to see how everyone is doing and communicate with them. I hope they're right.

This scares me because I hate high school, every day is a grind worse than Destiny, and it's hard to wake up in the morning because I don't want to go to school. How does one stay happy in high school?

      • My 30s have been some of my most enjoyable years despite some tough things happening in my life. I'm happily married, enjoy my career even if I work too much, and like the sense of who I am, where I'm at, and where I'm going. There's always going to be room for improvement but that's what keep motivated to keep pushing forward and making things better for myself and my wife. Part of it has been learning to be mindful of enjoying life and appreciating it in the moment, because you're not going to get those moments back. If you're dissatisfied Car then you need to make some (possibly scary) changes. People tell my boss he's so lucky since he goes to Mexico and lives on his sailboat for six months during the winter. He tells them that it's not luck, that he arranged his life that way. Find what makes you happy and arrange your life to fit that. Don't be a victim of circumstance. Don't just tread water waiting for the tide to take you to wherever. Swim buddy!

      • High School is definitely the best. I was kind of popular, well nerd popular. President of the Beta Club, captain of the model un team I even won some awards. All As with virtually no effort I played videogames all the time. Also all those Academic Teams were good to be on because you got free trips for competitions and days off from school. Colleges was bleh it was big college and never really got to know anybody I wasn't really a drinker so I didn't go out and party all the time. After college now I have a job and I make a decent amount of money so I can buy all the video games I want but I never have the time to play them because I work all the time so also kind of bleh.

      • The reason the poll is like this is because the people who haven't graduated yet can't vote for anything else. High school is hell

        • the vast majority of my memory has been miserable, i'm sure the little outwith my memory was miserable too, but in answer I might lean towards high school being a slightly more tolerable misery than current.

        • When you were at school it sucked. You had work to do, you had way more responsibility than you used to, and you had to put up with shitty teachers and annoying classmates and maybe shit like family problems or bullying. When you were in college it sucked. You had work to do, you had way more responsibility than you used to, and you had to put up with shitty lecturers and annoying classmates and maybe shit like family problems or bullying. When you were post-college it sucked. • 1st through 8th grade was fun as i didn't have responsibilities. Though I had a good time in highschool and have so far had a great time in college. It may just be my laid back attitude as i refuse to be depressed and don't bother worrying about things.
