RNG is broken, among 700 employees isn't there anyone who can fix it?

Everybody has those drops they always get. Me? I got 14 Hearafters once TTK was released. Before that, I got at least as many No Shards Beyond. And this isn't just a "me" problem. My friends have had their own "least wanted" drops. There are those who grind for hours without a Grasp, and those who get three in two hours. Just listen to the game's biggest fans - On the Planet Destiny Podcast, they always talk about how Patrick's luck is so bad, and ... Birds? ... is awesome. Gets everything in less playtime than Patrick where he gets nothing. No question, really: RNG is broken in Destiny. How can this be? "Random" means random, right? But a little research will tell you a dirty secret: computers can't do random. They can approximate it based on an algorithm, and that's what Destiny has. Algorithms take certain values, run 'em, and come out with a result. That result is the loot you get from RNGesus. I don't expect Bungie to give away their secret sauce, just fix the algorithm. Think about it, Bungie. What variables does your Fisher-Price algorithm use? Gamertag? That never changes. Time of day? Most people tend to only be able to play at about the same time (we have schedules for the rest of life!), so we're seeing the same darn drops. IP address? Yay, you're punishing people who ensure their internet is consistent with a static IP! Oh, and don't assign this task to anybody who already worked on the loot system. Your boy Luke doesn't program, so it must've been the loot guys who told him that the loot system would be smarter in TTK. It would take into account loot you already had. Guess what? It doesn't, so whoever was on that team is incompetent. Give the task to some new hire who still has a programming book or something from school. There are probably better RNG algorithms in there.

    the trouble with the system isn't that it it random. with the raid for instance, those drops are based off a set drop sheet and that drop sheet is compounded by both heroic and normal raid gear if you have not run normal mode, which is bad because those normal mode loot drops take up the space for a heroic raid gear piece. so around 9 times out of 10 you don't get what you need, it has taken me 6 weeks to gat any helmet that i could infuse into my titan (from 312 infused it to 318) or my hunter both had helmets under 313 and 4 weeks to even raise 1 light level. they should have seperated normal loot from heroic loot like they had done previously before TTK.

      • Surprisingly Bungie's RNG may actually be truly random. Humans have an interesting trait to view randomness as unfair. A coworker and I were discussing this phenomenon a week or so ago. He recalled how the original Apple shuffle, which was truly random, appeared to be biased. Apple made some changes to avoid replaying the five previous songs and people were happier. So, it may be a case of RNG being too random. If anyone has taken a statistics course, then they realize that a truly random outcome may repeat. It is only over millions of iterations that randomness occurs. You could try this yourself by flipping an unbiased coin. Flip a quarter tens times recording heads or tails. The repeat this five times or more. See how close to 50% heads and 50% tails you actually get.

        • I agree, it's not totally random - e.g. wait months to get a certain exotic, then get a dozen in a week. This has happened to me so often that I refuse to believe it is purely random in the way we typically understand the word to mean, e.g. an equal chance of all drops at all times

          • I have literally gotten the same items back to back from 3oc this week and it's always the same 4 or 5 items that drop, i've gotten better exotics randomly from the cryptarch that i could use as i never had the year 1 of them.

          • Rng isn't broken, drop rates are bad though. For example, to max out 320 light takes a lot of time and sometimes it's not achievable because you only need one piece and can't attain it. Bungie has it set up to wear the grind it to get gear in the first place. Now, what it should be is a grind to min max. You should be guaranteed drops and better drops. This way, you can min max your raid set, you can infuse into a full dead orbit build, or whatever. The goals are set wrong and I think they know it.

          • RNG is absolutely random. Bungie once spoke of a streamlined loot system taking into consideration what you got in the past. That is definitely not working. Perhaps the next DLC will provide us with a better loot system. Let's wait and see. I am sure Bungie has a lot of data about the drops people are getting

            i remember them saying you only get the stuff you need in year 2 so why is it i am always getting the same old crap from faction packages and nothing new all i want are the new updated ships for new monarchy and fwc but no rng wont let me get them then there is grasp of malock 8 months and still nothing the flare mantels i only have the solar drop for me tk raid loot only just started getting what i wanted but that wont last forever i ran atheon earlier and was more happy with loot i got from that witch is saying something about bungies year 2 loot

              An ATM that takes the money you deposit but never gives anything back is broken ... for the customer. As far as the 'Bank' is concerned - it's working juuust fine. :\ ...odds are the only way they'll ever fix this particular ATM is if people stop putting money into it. EDIT: spelling

            • It's been bad since day one. More than two years later and the problem still hasn't been resolved. I don't think there are many people who believe that Bungie will ever fix the algorithm issue that causes so many players to have bad rng and over frequent duplicates.

              • This is a big reason I and many of my friends have given up playing Destiny. Ever since the "smart loot system" I've been getting more duplicate drops than ever. I've decrypted over a dozen secondary legendary engrams to see them decrypt as items I already have. Still no Telesto. I have the same problem in the raid. The same item of armor drops from Golgoroth if I get any at all. People say you play for the enjoyment of it. I do, or should say did. After awhile it becomes tiresome. I don't expect exotics and legendary raid armor to fall from the sky every time I play. A reasonable rng is all I ask for. What I'm experiencing is far from reasonable. I would appreciate not being disappointed for the majority of my efforts. All too often I'd run a raid with friends who already had a full set of raid armor from VOG or CE. Their reaction once the checkpoint was cleared and the rewards dropped would be, "Not again!" as I'd either get the same item for the 10th time or none at all. I wasn't alone. I have other friends, day one players who were "forever 29" and "forever 31" as well who had the same problem with Destiny's broken rng system. The problem is compounded in KF. Not only is the rng dropping duplicates for too many players it has a tendency to drop them at lower light levels than what the player already owns. The punishing rng system has been an issue since before any of the dlc. It's been this way since the very beginning and has persisted for over two years. I'm not surprised that many players and former players doubt it will ever be corrected.

                • It's very simple. Random should not mean unrewarding. If a loot table for an end-game activity contains 10 items it should track your reward history plus current power levels. Yes you may want item 5 and get item 7 but you don't have either and item 7 drops at a higher power level than any of your previous gear.

                • No Shard Beyond sounds more like an Achievement they missed an opportunity on. But yea, the system is severely flawed. Unless they change how their NDA and contracts work, the RNG will never change...

                  • I've noticed Exotics seem fairly consistently random, but Legendaries are where I feel screwed with. I've been running FWC for the whole game. Guess what TTK kept giving me? Dead Orbit and Vanguard warlock coat and boots. I just finished the FWC quest for the Exotic class item. I switched over to Dead Orbit to level that up. Guess what it's started doing? Giving me nothing but FWC armor. I feel lied to.

                    Ran the nightfall the other day to get Alchemist's Raiment 2 points of light higher than the one I bought from Xur and infused. It should not give me a duplicate right after I just bought it. Then there's the Cryptarch (in no particular order): Choleric Dragon SRT-49 Haliaetus I Haliaetus II Bindcaster I Azoth Bend I Some Handcannon (Vanguard) Some Pulse Rifle (Vanguard or Crucible) Over and over again. Rank 45 on my Warlock and it drives me crazy. It's not proper RNG when it gives me the same things repeatedly and doesn't keep track of how many times I've already gotten them over a period of time. Frustrating to say the least.

                  • After absolutely grinding this game I would strongly say that ring is NOT random. I believe they have a rigged system that allows a higher percentage of drops over others. I get nothing but fourth horse man repeatedly on exotic specials
