Socialism Analogy
A lot of people have been saying that they prefer socialism to capitalism. I find this astonishing, in fact, and I'm not joking here, I legitimately thought that people who were against capitalism were a myth. However, once I joined the Bungie Forums, I realized how ignorant I was. Anyway, what I'm going to do is try to convince socialists that capitalism is the better system, by far.
Let's say you're back in grade school, and your economics teacher decides to do an experiment. Instead of giving everyone the grade that they earned, he/she will average all the grades and give everyone that grade.
The first test rolls around, and everybody takes it. The class average is a B, so the teacher gives everyone a B. Socialists would say this is great, and I would agree. This means that everyone gets a somewhat good grade. However, students who got an A will be upset.
By the time the next test is given out, the students who studied hard and got an A on the last test will have realized that they can't get an A, so most of them won't study, and they'll get a free ride through the test. The students that didn't study will again not study because they'll realize that they'd get a better grade by just not doing anything. So, everyone takes this test, and the class average was a D. Straight A students, and even average students are enraged, the only people benefiting are the failing students, and they're not even benefiting that much.
On the next test, nobody studies. They realize that despite they're best efforts, they're not going to get a good grade. They all take the test, and the class average is an F. At this point, everyone is furious.
This means that everyone is worse off. If Socialism is implemented, the same would happen to the country, it wouldn't be as extreme, but it would still be evident. The government's first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives or steal their ambitions and dreams.
If you are to take one thing away from this, please, realize:
A government big enough to give you everything you want, is a government big enough to take away everything you have.

I did not come up with this analogy, it is used very commonly to debate socialists.
Also, this is all theory, just like ALL economics.

Communism abolishes personal property and thus the motivation for self-improvement due to a lack of incentive, theoretically. You're construing total socialistic equality with a decline in personal motivation which I have seen no real-world evidence for. And I highly doubt you have any evidence supporting your claims outside of economic theory. That being said, pure socialism is a terrible idea in the same way that pure laissez-faire capitalism is a terrible idea. The key is mixing the two of them, which we already do in this country to an extent. It's not a binary decision. We can have the best of both systems. Edit: basically, socialist economics is "you get out what you contribute to it" whereas a communist economy would be "you get out of it what you need regardless of contribution." Gross simplification but it gets the point across.

1 ReplyI'm really not against capitalism but I do believe it needs to be regulated and having a balance between socialism and capitalism is the best scenario. It's binary thinking that is limiting and hurting us as a nation. Left/right, liberal/conservative, democrat/republican, socialism/capitalism. We need to be able to have balance between these ideals. For a country as big as ours, there is no correct side. It's a combination and balance of all views that makes us great.

2 RepliesAnd then there's the capitalist system, where the either better or more manipulative students get good enough grades to envelope their students and force them to drop the class or take their tests for them (horizontal integration; think Rockefeller), or envelope the professor and board of education to ensure they have better advantages on the tests (vertical integration; think Carnegie). Eventually, you get to a point where one or two students boost their own grade by keeping the rest of the class in the F range, to force the bell curve in their favor. The students forced into failing can't do anything about it of course, because the A students have engineered the classroom and means of test production to keep them stupid.

4 RepliesThese aren't mutually exclusive concepts. Your lack of education and basic understanding of the two is unacceptable. Btw, nobody's trying to replace capitalism... Not even the democratic socialists. Taxing the rich and public education =/= death of capitalism.

TL;DR Socialism: You have two cows. The government takes one of your cows and gives it to your neighbor. You're both forced to join a cooperative where you have to teach your neighbor how to take care of his cow. Bureaucratic Socialism: You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. They are cared for by ex-chicken farmers. You have to take care of the chickens the government took from the chicken farmers. The government gives you as much milk and as many eggs as its regulations say you should need.

17 RepliesI'm curious where you are seeing these people because I haven't seen any. I've seen a bunch of right wingers improperly accusing Bernie supporters as socialists. But neither Bernie or his supporters that I've seen are actually socialists, and definitely not in any manner you've described. So who are these people exactly?

You're confusing socialism with communism. Socialism is "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs," not "give everyone the same exact amount of stuff."
