I'd probably slap them. A slap carries the same psychological trauma as a punch, with less physical trauma and less chance of causing an actual injury. In general, I try to avoid hitting people. Throwing them at the ground and getting them in a choke hold is a different matter.

Either way, if a guy punched a girl out of self defence The guy goes to jail for assault, and the girl gets a slap on the wrist

A girl actually did, when I was 5. A friend and I were making fun of her for no real reason--some shit about her having cooties, I guess--and she told us to stop. I said "why, what are you going to do about it?" and she replied with "I'll punch you in the face if you continue." I laughed at her, and promptly got a knuckle sandwhich. Gave me a nosebleed.
