Atheist means "doesn't believe in a God". There is no God in Buddhism (except in some specific branches/schools that believe Buddha is a deity - mostly we don't).
So it's not really ironic.
It's like believing in not eating meat, then becoming the CEO of McDonalds. It's still not really meat :P
