Don't preorder taken king

Don't do it. I don't care if you buy it 10 seconds after it releases, but for the love of god don't preorder. If Bungie sees over half the active community buys the taken king before it comes out, they can cut whatever content they want and save it for a future DLC. If they see almost nobody preordering it, they will likely put as much content as possible into ttk. If you wait to buy it, you're helping us get a better game. Please, save your money for after it releases. Better yet, wait a week or two and see if it's actually worth your money rather than blindly throwing cash at Bungie. I don't care what you do, just don't preorder!

    • I'll preorder it because A) I'm a free citizen who works for my money so I'll do with it whatever I want, and B) I know I'm going to want to play it because I personally really enjoy the game. You don't have to preorder it, no one will force you to. You're operating under the false impression that "cutting content" is as easy as flipping a switch two weeks before launch after looking at preorder numbers. This late in development, whatever they have planned for The Taken King is going to be in it, no matter what happens with preorders. Preorder numbers don't matter as much on a sequel/expansion to a game with an established player base. If you've been paying attention to the weekly updates since the game launched, Bungie is obsessed with statistics and data analysis. They can make a very well educated guess as to how many players are likely to buy The Taken King, even if no one preorders it. Preorders are not what is killing the gaming industry. Market saturation, bloated budgets, and the newer generation of whiny entitled gamers are. You can play games on almost any device, and the potential profit of the Freemium business model, that is especially popular in mobile and indie gaming, is making the heavy hitters of the industry look at the continuous stream of income as a better, more predictable model than just putting out a game every few years and hoping you make enough money to sustain your company till the next one. The budgets for AAA titles are also increasingly out of control. As gamers want more intense enemy AI, graphics, and experiences, the games are getting more expensive to make, and with frequently shorter timelines than the previous console generation. The downside to the developers is that game prices have not increased. An Xbox 360 game on launch day was $60 (US). A brand new Xbox One game coming out this fall will be the same $60. That's 10 years of inflation on everything associated with making games, and no direct increase in revenue from selling them (note: you could make the argument of volume, that the number of games sold today is more than 10 or even 5 years ago, but the ratio of additional income from volume relative to the increase in costs is still negative). If you can find any other industry where that has happened, I will be surprised. Finally the gamers themselves. We live in a time of self-infantilized entitled narcissists, who want everything now and for free. They demand these huge open world games with incredibly innovative technology and an endless amount of compelling game play, but they don't want to spend any money to support them. There has to be compromise, and we live in a time where compromise and value of a product/service are not seen as important societal considerations. Bungie, Activision, and all the rest of them do not makes games out of the goodness of their hearts, they make them to sell to the consumers and make money. Do we hope that somewhere in that equation the developers are putting out a product that they are passionate about and is fun? Absolutely yes. Are there going to be disagreements about what is considered a good game and just a money grab? Of course, because I firmly believe that games are art and the beauty of art, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. Preorders provide little more than a marketing bulletpoint and a logistical forecast for supply chain management. Preorder or not, in the end it really doesn't matter. What matters is how many games they actually sell, and in a game like Destiny, what the community reaction is and the growth of a long term player base.

      • I'm already waiting for that first official release date and once preorder becomes available on psn I'm buying it. If you love destiny and you've spent days on end playing why would you not wanna support bungie by preorder I'm gonna guess and say your one of those complain about how little content there is

Whether we wanted it or not, we stepped into a war with the Activisionians on Bungie. So let's start by taking out their commanders one by one. Pre-ordering. From what I can gather, he commands the gaming content from a Publisher outside of Destiny. He's well protected, but with the right team, we can punch through those defenses, take this beast out, and break their grip on DLC.

          • Bungie: Hey, uh, there's like almost no pre-orders for the DLC.. Activision: Why? Bungie: Some idiot in the forums thinks we can't see his post and is telling people to buy it as soon as it comes out instead of pre-ordering. Activision: lol Bungie: lol

            • I don't think you understand how that works... Last time places like Gamestop didn't even take preorders on house of wolves. And look at all the content that people got regardless if they previously purchased the expansion pass. (Which I'll say a majority of people had) Preordering King wouldn't persuade bungie one way or another content wise. It's releasing in September! The content is there already. The only thing likely to change is the choice to produce more content in the future and how much they should create. They wanted this game to last for ten years anyone who thought it wouldn't be DLC intensive is naive. You don't get a whole console generation worth of content from a single disc and two DLC packs. That doesn't equate. Destiny will probably cost us $500 over the next ten years.

              • OP is right lads. If you lot genuinely want Destiny to be the best game possible, you shouldn't pre-order. Buy TTK if you want to, but, for the love of God, only commit money to it after Bungie delivers on the goods.

              • I'm looking at your last sentence:
I don't care what you do, just don't preorder!
You said you don't care as long as I don't preorder. Good, I'll tell my brother to log into my PSN account and buy/preorder it for me.

              • You're 100% correct. The reason this industry is so bad is because of preorders. Once companies know they have the money they don't care.

                • Desticles read your message and in response immediately run out to their nearest gamestop (or other gaming store of preference) and this ensues as they pre-order...

                  • And this is why the gaming industry is so bad. The comments below are exactly why we get little content with most games nowadays. Preorder=guaranteeing the company money so they can take out content and sell it for DLC.

                  • Same thing happened to Assassins creed unity and Watch Dogs. They had so many pre-orders, they just cut a ton of content and stopped putting effort into it. Pre order if you want, that's your decision, but if you're pre-ordering out of spite and feel you need to 1-up this guy, your life is a joke. Grow up. Even if you know you will play it no matter what, wait to but it seconds after it is released. If no one pre-orders, they will throw in extra content for you to enjoy!
