It baffles me why people use rocket launchers in the crucible. For what, 2-4 kills? A heavy machine gun will get you way more. For example consider thunderlord with field scout. 60 rounds will get over a dozen kills if you average 5 bullets a kill. If you're perfect you can get 20! Doesn't have to be thunderlord either. Any low rof high impact heavy will get you more kills even without field scout. Plus you won't blow yourself up!
Edit: I'm the thunderlord guy that switches from field scout to stability after I get my ammo (^_-)
Edit: Hearing a lot of arguments saying rockets counter hmgs; obviously but you don't rush dudes with rockets. The strategy I use is to stay back and be cover fire then when the dust clears proceed to win every gunfight. This wasn't a 1v1 what's better post. It's an what will get more kills if you use strategy!
Edit: apparently there's a glitch I was not aware of where if you use a rocket launcher you're indestructible, immune to supers, never miss and each shell will get you a triple kill. Hmg users users become super squishy and dance in the middle of the map waiting to be blown up by a rocket. This needs to be addressed.
Edit: ok seems like people prefer launchers for tactical and ease of use.

Yea HMG's are great for racking up kills, if you can survive the onslaught of rockets and supers. And that's a huge IF.

Edited by QuiscalusMajor: 5/5/2015 8:07:13 PMgotta be able to hold onto it to use it, i've had much better luck not dying with a launcher in my hand than MGs overall
-
Cuz with horse shoes and hand grenades perk you just shoot it at someone and jump away before they kill you with a machine gun. With all the lag in pvp you have to adapt to get the advantage. If you try to have a fire fight with someone in red, your gonna lose.
-
3 RepliesRockets can almost guarantee a kill with a machine gun you have to aim to shoot and with SO much lag, even when I get a drop on someone with my Jolders, I get outgunned (and yes I'm always going for head shots) today my Jolders got out shotgunned, out Thorned, out Red Deathed, out Last Worded which I think is compete bullshit
-
Launchers will be a better option in trials. U'll want to get kills as fast as possible
-
6 RepliesIt sounds like you just use your teammates to bait enemies and get kills while your teammates die.
-
1 Rocket launcher can easily shut down a group of machine gunners.
-
3 RepliesCos the game hates me and never blessed me with a low RoF heavy
-
It's a faster kill that often does not require aiming or seeing the enemy. Tracking m akes it even better when you do see the enemy. Lock on target, pull the trigger and move on for the next kill before the first kill is done.
-
I like to get my rocket locked onto the guys using Thunderlord and blow them up so they can't have heavy for half the game.
-
It's just the way I roll.
-
Because boom.
-
I went on a 18 streak with my jolders last night . Rockets suck.
-
I was using Gjallarhorn with my Crota Raid boots so was getting 4 rockets a drop. With those rockets I was averaging 6-8 kills but at times more. In the Iron Banner last week I got 252 rocket launcher kills with my three Guardians. I got each to level 4 (All I wanted was the Helmets) I would have to say that seems pretty successful to me. I also used Vision of Confluence as my main gun & got 553 kills. My special was Felwinters Lie & I got 204 Kills. I am not a PVP player most of the time. I normally only do Iron banner. Why use Gjallarhorn? It is fun, has great range & it wrecks.

It matters how good people are and how the connection is. If connection is bad and people are good, then I'll use RL - tracking/proxy goes a long way, plus, you'll get gunned down with a MG. If connection is good or people are bad, use a MG, many more hits.
-
When you use RL's you can take on anyone. When you use HMG's, you have to camp for a bit until you think everyone's used up their rockets. I don't like waiting, so I just use rocks.
-
Rockets pretty much guarantee you a few easy kills. HMGs can either leave empty handed or turn into long kill-streaks. Like you, I'm starting realize that my best strategy is to hang back until the rocket-fest is over then push forward and hammer the guys who now back to using primaries.

1 ReplyI do cause truth is real fun to use lol

Edited by UnwanteDreamz: 5/5/2015 3:01:07 PMLaunchers are easy mode. Sit at the back of the map and shoot at chokepoints. I wait until rockets die down then I go on a kill streak w my HMG. Rockets are cool though.
-
1 ReplyAgreed but my goal is to make sure the other team never gets heavy. I always save my super for heavy.
-
3 RepliesAs you alluded to; I mix it up between HMG and RLs depending on how the game is going. • If we're chasing, I'll use a tactical approach and use a HMG to try to rack up kills. • If we're in the lead, I'll be more risk averse. I'll step back and look to take down HMG users with my RL and sniper. Essentially stopping their kill-streaks and chances to get back in the game.
-
If you have 1 or 2 guys willing to bite the bullet on your team you can control the gamr with 4 hmgs, i always prefer my jolders hammer but love seeing all the enemies die due to a rocket blast, makes me feel a bit safer
-
I grab heavy ammo, find a nice place to hide, and come out after I quit hearing rockets. Then I go to a mid length highly frequented hallway or something, and wait for people. As long as they're too close to snipe, and too far to blast you with a shotgun, you'll win most of the gunfights. I've even won a 3 on 1 before.
-
One thing I really hate about using a rocket launcher is when a teammate Defender that is standing next to me activates their Ward of Dawn right as I'm firing a rocket.
-
Back when the majority of players seemed to use MGs, I went with the flow and used MGs. Now, for whatever reason, most players have switched to Rocket Launchers. Unless your team has successfully pushed both heavies, you're not going to kill a RL user fast enough. Rockets, especially those with tracking, are fire and forget. If you feel like using Truth or Gjally, you can just fire into a room or around a corner without exposing yourself to danger. I'd love to keep using MGs in PvP, but I'd also like to get kills with my heavy weapon. I'll stick to rocket launchers.
