As opposed to the huge artillery-caliber guns that modern tanks use. IFVs are designed to carry infantry in a manner that allows them to keep up with the speed of an armored assault. But give them greater protection than they would get from softer-skinned vehicles and more firepower than could be mounted on those smaller vehicles. https://youtu.be/q7I0qEVBeiw
