The only common encounter I have with someone who would probably self describe herself as "Woke" is my sister's friend. A nice girl, but I am just left speechless at times. Any advice on how I could have responded (in a non-snarky way) would also be appreciated!
Times I was left speechless:
1. The movie Bohemian Rhapsody was in theaters. I asked her if she'd seen it. Her answer was that she would not see it, because the actor portraying Freddie Mercury was Caucasian (apparently the real Freddie Mercury was had some African ethnicity).
2. Another movie example. We were discussing what to watch and somebody mentioned the Green Book. She said she wouldn't want to watch that because of its White Savior Complex (in the movie, a white person assists a black musician).

"oof" is the best response to that sort of -blam!-ery.

1 ReplyShe must be stupid. And you can’t fix stupid

2 RepliesThere’s some crazy -blam!- on my campus in my year but not studying the same course as me. She went to go see Terminator: Dark Fate because she believed Gabriel Luna as the Terminator was a great step for “Spanish and skinny” ethnicities. I had no words for it then, I have no words for it now.

Tell her that looking at people through their color is racist. Instead look at people through character. Saying you didn’t go to see a movie because the main character is white, is basically me saying I didn’t vote for Obama because he’s black. It’s just dumb.

Wow, sorta racist on their ends

Wow this girl is something else

5 RepliesA group of army veterans started jeering and calling out Hillary Clinton while she was visiting my town to give a non-political speech where she casually talked about her life. Everyone else in the crowd was attentive and quiet EXCEPT these dudes, who were causing a scene. Venue guards had to escort them out because they were disrupting the event.

1 ReplyThat chic is just stupid. Look, you can put Denzel in just about any role & I will watch that. Same with Tom Hanks. I don't give a shit about their race, I give a damn about how good a job they do in the role. So, I guess if I stop to help someone on the side of the road change their tire, it is because I have a White Savior Complex & has nothing to do with me just having been raised right. I saw where you said earlier that this chic is dating your sister or something, but I still think she is racist. My reason is that having grown up in the South, I knew racist white folk who truly believed it was their job to impregnate as many black women with their kids as possible, so as they could help turn them white. To me, that is about the stupidest damn thing I have ever heard. So either she is stupid, she is racist or she is both. I hope she is just ignorant though, because ignorance can be cured.

But that may have just been the quality of the camera at the time. 2.As her how she feels about welfare. Oh wait, we’re not supposed to talk about that. Edit: also this is why I don’t talk to my siblings’ gf/bf until AFTER they decide to get engaged. Unless you’re part of my family, your opinions don’t matter to me.

I was told today at lunch that you can't spell ass without cheeks. I refuse to use anymore of my precious brain cells to further interpret this statement.

Was green book a Robert Downey Jr. Movie? Also hit the block/mute button and move on.
seriously though, if someone buys into stuff like that I would space myself pretty far from them.
... I'd just do what I usually do with my sister, just smile and nod...
not included in the DLC
3 RepliesWent camping Heard a drum circle going Wandered over with my friends, a couple of whom were musicians Got invited to sit around fire with them One friend had brought Hawaiian macadamia nuts covered in chocolate and shared them with new friends One guy took one then said: “Wait, does this chocolate have milk it?” My friend said “yeah it’s milk chocolate” Drum circle woke guy said “God! I can hear the cows screaming” and then threw it into the fire. He then went off for another 20 minutes on how awful dairy is, called it evil, and then said “but I’m not going to go into it, we’re here to chill”

When I was in college, one of the people that hung out in the area I hung out in said that the Dragonball Evolution movie was good because it had a diverse cast that wasn't just Asian.

As someone who would probably be described as "woke", I can say the response I would appreciate most is money or snacks or something like that. If you can't offer either (very rude) then you can just talk normally as you would with any human. But I think smiling and nodding is fine too. People say dumb things a lot (look at where you are) and trying to have a Grand Intellectual Discussion with all of them is not worth it. I would probably spend a lot of time talking to a mirror.

Freddie was born in Zanzibar to Indian Parents.... Rami Malek was born in the US, the son of Egyptian immigrants. Your sister's friend is stupid, uninformed, or both.

If you come across as snarky, so be it. As it is, your species, especially those within advanced societies, needs to relearn how to have thick skin and not be offended by mere words. I disagree with you with a lot of things, I am sure, but at least you are honest about it. That is the only way truth can be brought to the light and ideas to be tested. For both instances I would have plainly said that those reasonings are based upon racist ideology, and then proceeded to quote your own (assuming you are American) Martin Luther King, Junior in that he said “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” If anyone is judging someone’s value by mere appearance, that is literally racism.

2 RepliesA former associate of mine. Got upset with me when I expressed the belief that there are TWO genders.

"Stick it to the man..." Flash the peace sign... Then get real serious about never talking to that person again... Cuz like,... "Blamers gotta blame, blame, blame..."

4 RepliesSo she is a racist? What else is there to say? 🤷♂️

You just can't with some people. I am absolutely baffled with the Freddie Mercury bit. The actor who portrayed him is actually a few shades darker than he was, or at least appears to be. If Freddie Mercury is African then, Elizabeth Warren is Indian. Not the dot kind!
