In general there is a lot of good things we can look forward towards like some love to core playlists or changing the world with fights challenging that blueberries would matter.
There is one line that really worries me, that works in games like WoW, but can't work in D2.
That's the idea i'm talking about:
"The simplest version of how it is going to work is: Legendary weapons will have fixed values for how high they can be infused. Those values will project the weapon’s viable-in-end-game lifespan and we think that lifespan is somewhere between 9 and 15 months. "
What is worrying is the feel of weapons, as mentioned in the 1st part of DC:
"I recently sat with a couple of external folks who really love Breakneck. It’s the only thing they use. They aren’t ever going to use another primary weapon in Destiny 2. Why? Because they don’t need to."
This is wrongly interpreted, Breakneck is awful, been for a long time, they use it cuz they CAN. Those guys love the feeling. Now, in games like WoW, there is no feeling to weapon, there is an archetype with combat associated to that archetype and what ppl use is purely translated to stats. Weapons don't have the feel like D2 weapons (or Dark Souls weapons) have like it's mentioned in this DC.
Making old weapons obsolete would not only go against ppl who love feel of not the most powerful things (like Breakneck, even tho Sundial auto is way better, but doesn't feel like Breakneck) and also would go against most of the playerbase (cuz even if i myself do endgame activities i recall i'm in minority) meaning forcing more grind. Instead of chasing stuff we want, we would chase stuff we need.
Like in this season I've got god roll of most Sundial weapons, i didn't need to, but i did and i'd def use them if like Linear Fusions would be in a better spot or firewave from Martyr had a place to shine outside places like Altars of Sorrow. If Sundial had 140/150 kinetic handcannon (had sidearm in kinetic) i'd likely replace my Austringer since i'm reload addict and can't make full use of auto rifle's magazine.
I'll 100% agree that weapons do feel unique. I can't stand sound and feel of Spare Rations, that's why i stick to Austringer even tho it's worse since is Aus has 10 less rpm. I'd hate to be forced into using weapons i can't stand feel of, just cuz others are literally unusable. Making old stuff irrelevant is going directly against unique feel of all the weapons. What's the point of uniqueness when it's irrelevant?
Old stuff is getting slowly irrelevant cuz of lack of perks. In this season we got a bunch of old weapons back, with new random rolls giving them all a standing once more.
There are definitely things that are underused, like rocket launchers (outside exotics) and this is cuz they have no place there could shine, their dmg is not outstanding as you'd expect from ROCKET launcher. Ammo is scarce, dmg is meh and you can kill yourself with them so no wonder nobody uses them.
Limiting weapon power is not gonna make a big changes to meta, it's just gonna change feels of weapons, making ppl even less convinced to get things, since they will just be useless in 9 months.
Right now ppl are still farming for older weapons like Mindbender or Reckoning stuff. Doing old raids has a point since each raid has something to pursue. You'd kill all that ambition to go back to older activities. How would you convince ppl to run Last Wish, known as the best raid in the game, if all loot, ALL is meaningless?
When i imagine that system in place now i'd use Jack Queen as primary. would it change something? Not really outside the fact i'd be using sth i don't enjoy. In classic RPGs all you care about are stats so newest weapon is always the best, in D2 -that's a 1st person game- feel of weapon is the most important outside dps phases (but those dps weapons are not the ones you use the most anyway, you literally use them for few seconds, cuz that's how long dps phases are). If bows were to get a slight buff i'd prob swap to bows, cuz i love feel of Black armory bow and Arsenic Bite, but those guys are so underwhelming in pve you can run out of ammo (in general Dawn's champion mod choice was bad since champions feel like bullet sponges with those choices).
You Bungie might be surprised but a lot of weapons are not used since getting them is really painful. You'd see a lot more Last Hope (that's technically old, but it's new with rolls) if not that it's hard to get. I myself got 3 god rolls, but i'm at almost 900 obelisk level. 900 drops for 3 Last Hope rolls is not that nice if ppl are aiming to get specifically Last Hope.
I've seen a post a while ago proposing that weapons would have random stats on them, like literal stats like +10% handling, +4% dmg, +20% reload speed (so you could find both buffs and debuffs). And i do believe random stats on weapons would give them more RPG feel and make all weapons dropped be possibly good, kind of killing that current situation where "weapon with name X is the best in Y archetype" since other weapons in that archetype could possibly roll with better stats and i do believe that's one of the best ways to make ppl use all weapons since every weapon could be the best one, surprise could be found on every step.
Now that's a long post, if you read it all, dear reader i'd love to see your perspective in the comments. Every opinion has its own arguments and i'd love to see them all including possible (and likely) counterarguments.

3 RepliesI think the issue he raised is a valid one; weapons don’t have the space to be unique and I often feel like a lot of weapons are forced into archetypes in order to balance them. I don’t remember it feeling like that in D1. The solution he proposes though, isn’t one I agree with. In fact, your comparison example between a weapon in WoW vs DS or Destiny is so spot on and so true. Feeling means a lot, the look and sound of a gun make so much difference, to me at least. I still frequently go back to my Niflheim Frost in PvP, even during metas that don’t benefit scouts because it’s like putting on your old jeans after taking of your works trousers; the weapon might not be as effective as whatever the current meta is but its feel makes you play better. Guns are an extension of a character, I’m pretty sure he says that himself, they are part of my character’s make-up and knowing that parts of that head cannon will be forced into obsolescence is rotten. My opinion is that there already isn’t enough option to make our guardians feel unique and using off-meta or obscure weapons is one way of bringing some identity to my avatar. I guess a way to offset this would be a way to customise certain non-performance based aspects of guns, which I guess we already have some of with ornaments and shaders but not all guns have them and perhaps we could have the option to change the sounds of the gun or add personalisations like insignias or battle scars or something? I’m just spitballing here but essentially, I think the DC raises some good points but finds unsatisfactory solutions but I am glad to have an insight into the conversation at an earlier date.

1 ReplyImagine getting a god roll and being like "meh" because it only has 2 mor emonths shelf life.

I am a collector player, I have collected most and still am collecting all of the weapons god rolls. And I also love to use them all and try out new combinations just for fun, played some pvp suing a primary bow and a thin line hand cannon with opening shot and quickdraw just last week. All those many hours are now to be thrown in garbage because my loot will get an expiration date? Really BUNGIE? If a collector type of player can no longer feel welcome in a looter type of game this means there is something wrong with the game.

2 RepliesEdited by Twizt1up: 2/26/2020 7:40:18 PMI agree with you. It was disheartening to read the DC.... I'm still working on replacing all my armor that I meticulously set up, and tuned to my playstyle for each encounter (raid(s), PVP, general PVE, pure DPS PVE, and gambit....rarely) I'm not even done yet because I'm trying to replace all that stuff while still doing this seasons activities, while also doing some stuff I missed on the moon, find decent rolls on the armor I actually use now (just started tuning it in the last 2 weeks for last season's stuff((stats)), I can't afford to infuse this season's armor yet), let alone my exotic armor, and now the 1 constant, my arsenal, which I've already had to whittle down to 1 pve gun/ 1 pvp gun to try out because of vault space, or rather, lack thereof (I'm trying but I have kids and I don't play when they're awake, and of course I work) , is going to be OBSOLETE in 9-? months?????? I can't imagine a worse path to choose. I play nearly every day and I was thankful that this season didn't have much to do so I could catch up on stuff (I will finally get jotunn this week) other than raids, since I teach one nearly every sat in my clan and get pulled off in different directions helping clanmates and such during the week.... I really thought they got a clue when they said they were going to be working on the armor issues between seasons (see above-- other than powerful friends I haven't touched this season's armor) and then they drop this BS on us. As you said this is a HUGE step BACKWARDS and I'm to the point that I might take a step back myself as a consequence. I have some other games I've been meaning to get to anyway, but D2 was still enjoyable for me. I 'became legend' and I loved it, despite the bumps along the way. I suppose we'll see what they end up doing, but hopefully they don't implement this sideshow of an idea. Here's hoping your post gains some traction.
