A German friend of mine put it like this.....
I was talking to a friend that is German and lives there.....she said how the German government turned the site where Hitler killed himself into a parking lot so it wouldn't become a neo-nàzi shrine and look at our confederate statues turned into. Made me lol
She so told me recently of some drunk Americans walking around doing the nàzi salute.....until a German citizen walked up and laid his ass out haha

2 RepliesI always viewed civil war statutes as monuments to those Americans who fought and died for their beliefs(even though their beliefs weren't the best). Also assumed that since they were made after the war, they were trying to also help the country heal

1 ReplyThis isn't a proper argument in favor of getting rid of confederate monuments. People should instead be arguing that it's unfair for the black citizens who live in their shadow to be paying taxes for the upkeep of them. Very few people alive today would want to rally to these statues because of what they represent. Sure some white nationalists rallied to a statue of Lee (a man who opposed slavery, mind you), but honestly this just shows their ignorance in that they don't understand what the civil war was entirely about. It helps to prove that they're simply idiotic, and that nobody should give them the time of day. Now on the other side of the argument, one could say that it's important to keep these monuments around for the historical significance they have. When my children and I walk by a confederate statue, I can tell them a brief story about what the civil war was, what it was fought over, and why the confederates were wrong. It's a good chance for the youngins to learn from them in a place outside scrappy public schools. They're are good arguments to each side, but the argument the OP purposes is weak at best.

2 RepliesYeah, about that. That stuff was erected during an extremely maniacal regime. These Civil War monuments were erected after the fact. On top of that the only real thing the South was guilty of is slavery. Compare that to a regime that not only enslaved but was in the process of mass murder of many groups of people. Last I checked the southerners didn't kill slaves in the name of ethnic cleansing. Same thing in Germany happened in Russia after the death of Stalin. Try again

6 RepliesFull disclaimer! The germans didnt remove the monuments and sites themselves, they were destroyed mostly by the soviets and anything that remained was gutted by the allies. It was part of the casteration process to ensure germany would never have the will to fight again..

And that was more normal back then. Thats not justifying it though. But other than that the confederacy was just part of the United States trying to do what the United States did with the British. This has next to nothing to do with the statues. Yes there are crazies on the right. There are also some on the left though. But that's for another time...[/i]
