The inexplicable decision to completely destroy our exotic faction class items

So I'm not going to go into my full thoughts on RoI at this point because honestly I just haven't experienced enough of it to make any kind of overall determination. There have been some really cool things and some that have been head scratchers, but there is one thing that has really been a tremendous disappointment since the expansion dropped and that is Bungie's decision to make all our exotic faction class items available to everyone as legendary reward drops. Honestly this might be one of the absolute worst decisions I've seen them make since this game released. Getting to 25 on a Faction is an accomplishment, particularly for those of us who've leveled more than 3 characters to endgame rank. I posted last month about the tremendously fun time that my friend and I had earning our Chaos Cloaks from FWC. I was way behind in rank and leveled 13 times by turning in mats to get there, but we got them 10 minutes apart and it was probably the single best thing I've ever gotten in this game and it was unique AF when out in the worlds in the game. 5 minutes after logging in to ROI, I went to the FWC vendor and saw the Chaos Cloak available as a Legendary and by the time I left the vendor there were 3 other Guardians standing there wearing the Legendary versions. Look at my hunter now. I'm not wearing my favorite thing I've ever gotten and that's pretty sad. It's one more instance in a progressive line of Bungie saying they respect the time and effort we put into the game, but then doing something that completely invalidates all we've done. From the infamous DeeJ year 1 weapon quote to the recent removal of IB bounties and now to this. It's not just about the fact that anyone can get them now. It's about the time we invested in doing the quest to get them because the PvP part was during IB and it was a bitch. It's also about the fact that we spent the last month trying to complete these special things from year 2 and to see that rendered moot is really not cool. Between us, we spent hundreds of strange coins and motes to get these faction items before ROI dropped (RWG not only got her Chaos Cloak, but the New Monarchy Mark and Dead Orbit Bond) that we could have held onto for ROI had we known our Items would be just given away. Anyway, maybe it's salt but like I said, it's probably insignificant to some, but it's part of an overall pattern that I really wish Bungie would do some inward soul searching on. We play this game and we invest our time because we love it and we love immersing in the worlds alone or with friends, but Bungie cannot keep showing us that the dedication we put into this game means nothing and that is what these decisions do. I've had fun in ROI too, but this shouldn't have happened and they need to understand that.

i have over 150 faction levels on my hunter alone, most of which i got year one before you could just dump mats into them. over 100 in fwc and 40 some in dead orbit. i dont care there are legendary versions of the cape. the legendary versions dont give the spawn animation, bonus rep, and cant be rerolled. also getting 25 faction levels isnt much of an accomplishment now

Omg. I realised I got the legendary version of the exotic bond I was doing the quest for. What a way to ruin its value. Now I don't even want to finish the quest anymore.

  • Wtf!? Really? I spent all my time to get two of each for class, slogging my faction levels up, suffering through crucible, but now i can just BUY them now? Cheap, bungie. Cheap.

  • They're not the same. Exotic gives you faction rep, Legendary gives you crucible rep.

    • I do not see the issue. I have my exotic 'Mark of the Oblivion' which I earned, and I have my legendary 'Mark of the Oblivion', which was given to me in a random drop from my faction. You still have to earn the exotic class item.

      • I managed all 3 exotic class items for my Warlock and 1 each for my Titan and Hunter before RoI dropped. Seeing this now.. does make me feel kind of cheated. Just Bungie shooting par for the course.

      • When I got the legendary Titan mark from New Monarchy expecting it to look like toilet paper, I got the one that looks exactly like the exotic! Oh wait, it practically is... I feel like I cheated and I agree 100%, I guess they want us on the book now? And the new gear?

I know how you feel. My favorite cloak is still locked in Y1. IDC if it comes back into rotation for Iron Banner, that just invalidates my efforts further, IMO, because the cool thing about having it now (even at light level 30) is that very few people actually have it. If/when they bring it back, EVERYONE will have it at a higher light level, AND I still have to grind to re-earn what I already have in my inventory. It's just very insulting IMO and one of the reasons why I didn't pick up the expansion. I want to see some changes regarding the things that mean the most before I give Bungie more money. It's very simple really. Respect your players and the time investment they have made in this game. Stop nerfing everything fun. Stop prioritizing PVP over PVE - separate them, or have them take EQUAL priority (meaning on occasion you will have to tell the crucibabies to stuff it). These are all non-content related things that they could change TODAY, and even w/o the new RoI content, it would improve the game immensely. But I'm still waiting (and I doubt that day will actually come). I'm just counting down the days to Skyrim Remaster's launch.

        • Normally I would agree with you sols but the item isn't the same. The appearance may be but the effects are not. The perks are different.

          • This thread is filled with people that equates the appearance of an item to it's value. In a RPG none the less. This has nothing to do with which side of the argument is a special snowflake. Both versions of the snowflake theory is equally lacking. The point is. You now have more options to create builds you like with the look you like. That is all there is to it. If you have the exotics, well great. They are still reroll-able and with a unique perk. In other words they still hold a unique value. The fact that they don't look unique anymore does nothing to it's value except on a superficial level. Equally superficial is also peoples decision to feel that this somewhat diminishes the value of the "grind" they did to get said cloaks. They are still unique. They still tell people around you that you ranked to 25 (ooooooh). You still have to get to 25 with a faction to get the quest. Now, now. I do understand that there is value in the perceived superficial. However it is nothing but subjective, and to argue that it somehow isn't. Well that is a discussion without value. Which is probably why this thread is coming off as a cry-baby thread.

            • They aren't the same item guy. They only look it. You don't get the spawn in animation. You don't get bonus faction experience. That is what makes it exotic and different.

                    • I think you need to do some inward soul searching. Read your own post why do you think so many players have left ? How do you think they will get new people to play ? I've read a lot of your posts and you express a lot of my views. I just couldn't continue to throw money at the screen for a product that didn't have value for me. I just stopped in to see if it was time to get back in, guess not. I don't want you to think this is some kind of bashing to you or any other person that has played this game since day one or year 2. Continue on Guardian there listening.

                      • The only thing that sh!ts me is the spawn in animation doesn't work anymore. It does nothing to the gameplay, however it was such a cool idea, looks great, and this is what makes it truly unique for me.

                      • the actual exotic class items increase your reputation gains with that specified faction, along with giving us the special spawn-in effect, while all of the legendary class items give only crucible reputation gains and not increased gains to your faction; so while they did add the exotic ones as legendaries, they're just as useful as the other legendary ones so i don't see what the big deal is about it

                        • Sorry Sols but I have to disagree on this one. Being able to rank up faction rep with mats just diluted the special factor of that item or anything else faction related. I merely haven't gotten to 25 because I keep deleting my characters and also too lazy to farm mats. My son is well over level 100 in his factions and all from farming mats. No real reason to run the nightfall for rep when you can turn in heavy synth and motes. Yet we have real serious issues that are being ignored like those with multi console homes who can't play together anymore due to the latest patch. Yes I am one of those homes who invested a great deal of money in large flat screen TV's, consoles, headsets......so we could all play together as a family. Yet we can't play together, nor can I play with my other son and his fiancé who lives a few blocks away or any of my other friends I have made here. How about we stick to issues that really matter to the gaming experience instead of trophy gear that wasn't really that hard to get.

                          • Cosmetics aside, you're still getting a Faction Rep boost and Respawn Animation, whereas the Legendaries do not. I'm just not entirely sure it's worth THIS level of "outrage" ( for lack of a better term) I spent the time and energy to get my New Monarchy bond. I'm proud of it and the achievement it represents to ME. That's really all that matters. A few weeks from now, we're all going to be wearing the same gear anyway.

Destroyed is kindof hyperbolic, don't you think? I mean, sure, the animations seem to be bugged but otherwise they work just the same as they did before. They're less unique in appearance. Meh. I guess class items are more important to you primadonna hunters but I'll live. If they would make a damn Y3 Emerald Light again I'd probably never wear anything else anyway but the bond from the Sepiks strike is sexy AF so that's where my first skeleton key is going.

Excuse my vulgarity guys. But - Holy shit Rise of Iron story sucked bigtime. It reminded me a lot of Destiny 1. We are thrown into a fight we know nothing about. We are given some bullshit facts about what happened which sound like horseshit. Glad there are new gear to get in this thing or it would not be worth getting at all. How could 100 guardians(Iron Lords - whatever) go down to SIVA. But me by myself I am able to destroy SIVA for good alone. How does that even make any sense? So am I stronger than the original Iron Lords combined. So maybe they were not such great men and women after all. Do you see what I am saying here. They overhyped this expansion and SIVA. But literally destroyed her in 30 minutes. So lets just call it what it is. A Light level increase and reskin. I will still play it tho, but I reserve my right to complain about the lack of story. SIVA literally was not an artificial intelligence. It was not a character, so destroying it felt underwhelming. Why couldn't they come up with a cool enemy to fight. Literally the only reason it felt good to finish the story was that I could now start grinding for Light levels to play the raid.
