One of my favourite memories of the vault is staying on, when the rest of my clan had gone to bed and just chilling out on patrol in front of the vault, sniping at vex from the top of a pillar and just taking in the scenery.
One of the plates hums to life and that unmistakable sound of the vex machinery clunking as a raid begins. I aim down icebreaker's scope at the left plate and, sure enough, see a team beginning the raid. I quickly switch weapons (pulse rifle to aetheon's, icebreaker to found verdict, and machine gun to gjally) and head over to enter the fray. I quickly weigh up the situation (who looks like they're struggling, are there any guardians down/out of position) and, more often than not, take up my position bolstering the left (bottom plate). Sometimes others sparrowing though on patrol join in, sometimes no-one comes by for the (seemingly) short time it takes for the shimmering sound and series of clunks that signify the door opening.
I rush to the door, waving to each guardian as they enter, and they wave/dance/point in return. Sometimes i'm invited to join due to shortage of numbers and i happily accept. Sometimes the fireteam is full but that extra body has helped make the opening of the door a bit less painful, and that knowledge is all the thanks i need. For all i know this may be the fireteam's first foray into the hidden mysteries of the vault and i've helped them begin their adventure or it could be their twentieth and i've helped save them time and get the door open straight away, it doesn't matter. The ability to do this was sadly missing from Crota and Oryx, and i think may be an element that contributes to the enduring legacy of the Vault.
The opportunity that having the Vault entrance accessible on patrol gave meant that you really never knew how your night was going to end up, and I think that that unpredictability was part of the magic of the early days of destiny. I hope it returns.

1 ReplyI'd all but forgotten about that. I helped a lot of guardians. If I saw a group starting the raid I'd stop and lend a hand. It always put a smile on my face when someone would return the favour. It was a neat way the comunity cane together. Even if it isn't the entrance, I'd love to see part of the raid take place in a public space.

2 RepliesThey confirmed some parts would be visible from patrol, so there probably are parts that you can do that miss. I loved that about VoG too.

I thought it would be something they did consistently, but I was disappointed to find out otherwise. Would be awesome if they took the time to patch that into the other raids even if they've already been done and have little interest. Though I understand there's probably good reasoning as to why it's not there

1 ReplyGood read. I would usually go to the high plate on the right, help kill adds that spawn above and ones that spawn below that migrate towards center. Then I would snipe adds that spawn towards the far left. This one time I was collecting bounties on Venus and ended up over by the VoG door. A team of 6 was having a hard time of it so I went up high right and started killing everything. The spire formed and all six of them messaged me their profound thanks. Only one of them had completed the raid before and he was taking them through it. They were all excited about the raid before them. We added each other as friends and I waived as they descended through the door and into the void. Felt good.

3 RepliesDespite having never done the raid myself, I sat around the entrance a couple of times to help people get the door open, even if it was just me bullet sponging it up. It was nice.

4 RepliesThe game should be like that. We shouldnt have a strike menu, we should have to go into patrol and ride our sparrows to the area of the strike. Then we leave that area to do patrol missions or another strike.

1 ReplyNever was their a better feeling than being the 7th man on the raid team. You didn't know the people going in, you didn't know if you'd ever see them again or if they'd succeed. You were a doorman, an extra trigger or a shield against the Vex. You saw them off and that was reward enough.

1 ReplyThe Vault of Glass will always be the most breathtaking and nostalgia inducing level of any game I have and ever will play.

1 ReplyKeep up with good posts like this

1 ReplyI like how even though you weren't in the actual raid group, it would still give notifications when the spire was up.

1 ReplyThe responses in this post are the best I've read in a long time...a long time. Nice to read folks reminiscing about experiences rather than bitching about them.

4 RepliesEdited by elkhoury: 8/6/2016 3:32:33 PMOh yeah, I remember them days, they were surely fun. There were few times when my team and another team were actually starting at the same time.

1 ReplyTHINK OF ALL THE MACHINIMA POTENTIAL.

1 ReplyAgreed. ..patrols should act as hubs for activities.

9 RepliesYour over use of emojis bothers me. Don't get hyped for an expansion that's smaller than ttk because look how long ttk lasted.

1 ReplySomeone said somewhere on the forums that many parts of the raid will be visible from patrol, possibly even accessible from patrol.
-
1 ReplyAnd you were my homeboy for the day if you helped us. * high five*

9 RepliesAgreed. I get a little misty-eyed every time I pass by the VoG entrance now...

1 ReplyYeah, and you could get 6 people in the cosmodrome

1 ReplyIt would be cool if in certain parts of the raid where we have to traverse the terrain, we can see people from patrol and wave and dance with them. And I'm not talking about the beginning of the raid and that's it. I'm talking about halfway in or something and you have to go onto a part of the wall and run it and look into the patrol area and see other guardians.
-
2 RepliesYeah that would be awesome

1 ReplyI agree those were good times, more to come :)
