Never, in ALL my years of gaming, have I ever encountered something so unanimously hated on by a community.
Skill-Based Matchmaking.
Granted, the game has numerous problems. I'll ignore all of those for now. SBMM has proven, time and time again, to be the constant plague of PvP. I've seen COUNTLESS posts asking and begging for its removal. And yet, after months of "tweaking the matchmaking," it is still blatantly obvious that it exists, and is consistently ruining the experience. Unbelievably horrible connections, the constant sweaty matches, and the solo-players-against-full-teams-in-iron-banner because of SBMM is pathetic and inexcusable. This is YOUR game, Bungie. The community has been in agreement for MONTHS that this is a problem and simply needs to be removed, or at the very least, DRASTICALLY changed so that it is no longer relevant.
I'm still in disbelief how this is even still a thing. Remember Black Ops 3, when they tried implementing SBMM in? The backlash from the community was loud and clear, and Treyarch, in response, took it back out within a matter of days. YOURS has been causing issues for the game for months, the community has been voicing their opinions on it loudly, and still, nothing has been done. It is simply pathetic that no positive action has been taken regarding the situation, and that you don't listen to the clear voice of your community. It's disrespectful and disgraceful.
You need to fix this, Bungie. We're past the point of asking politely. The community DEMANDS that you remove SBMM from Destiny.

Edited by Wintermute 2050: 4/26/2016 1:22:59 AMI quite agree that the current system is really flawed. But I also well remember the posts from several months ago when gamers were screaming about connection-based matchmaking and that it should be abandoned. We now have a hybrid of the two types, and it also is failing. A ranked system would be the best solution.

1 ReplyFirst - Bungie stated, in quite a "clear voice," that SBMM would still exist (after the sneaky debacle) but CBMM would be primary...most times it works for me, sometimes it doesn't. Second - my "clear voice," as part of this community, is to keep SBMM. The crucible is much more enjoyable for me and my kids when playing with people of similar skill level.
-
Hold up. Since when have we ever asked politely for even a short extended period?

1 ReplyReading through this and trying to understand some common ground on this issue. 1. Nobody likes a laggy game So this should probably be dealt with first. 2. No one likes going against really good players all the time. This applies to both the really good players and the really bad. No one wants to have to give 100%, 100% of the time. PvP games are more fun when players can identify the strong players on both their own and their enemies team, allowing people to try and think out their firefights and engagements so that they can be more likely to succeed. Again, no one wants to deal with a team where they perceive every enemy they fight as "at thier level or stronger" this has to do with a bit of psychology and self confidence in ways that I don't have enough sleep to properly explain. So trying to create a balance in games where you have a good amount of relaxed paced matches and more serious matches is crucial. 3. Anything that negatively affects either #1 or #2 is not in any way helping the current situation.

I'm a casual that started playing in year 2, during all this SBMM. During all this time I been getting a lot better, I usually play solo. When I do play in trials, like last night it's with randoms off lfg doing only bounties. I like SBMM because it has made me get better. I was .3kdr-.5kdr for a long time, until I started learning which weapons are good/learning the game. I kept going up. Skill based got me better if I would play people lower than me you don't learn as much when you play people your skill. I don't play much but my goals have been to be 1kdr player now 1kdr player on trials which I think I have on two characters after that I'm planning to get 1.5kdr and do the same for trials. SBMM will only help the higher kdr players, they want to dominate the weaker players because they can't get any better. Not only that the better players usually always have fireteams so a team of 6 players with 2kdr will crush the poor .8kdr randoms.
-
3 RepliesHe speaks for more than just the top players. We didn't have sbmm all year one and did fine learning the game. I am around average, maybe a tad better, and I hate sbmm. Gamers for years have been against sbmm, it's ruined games in the past.

2 RepliesAddressing those in defense of SBMM: Can we stop categorizing the player base and consider the subject rationally for a moment? Aside from a personal bias, what place does SBMM really have in Destiny? Let's take a look at a quote made by Lars Bakken himself regarding the crucible during an interview with GI: "Interesting thing about the crucible is that if you take it too seriously you're just going to be frustrated. And it's not because the game isn't balanced or the game isn't fun or whatever......sometimes it's the baggage you bring in from other games. But if you sort of like play it to relax and just have fun it's a really amazing experience." To put things more clearly, the crucible is not meant to be competitive. This point is made all the more apparent by the lack of ranked play and custom lobbies. In the current state of things, SBMM (even in small doses) does nothing but increase competition and concurrently worsen connections. To say that SBMM has a place here is to go against Bungie's declared design vision for Destiny's PvP. "Skill" is not a stated part of the agenda. Whether or not you are losing by small margins should not even be in the discussion. Do not expect to be able to perform well or win. That is not the game's focus. It is simply intended as a fun and social experience. To implement SBMM is to alter the "experience". Now, having said all of that, I would absolutely love SBMM to have a place in Destiny's PvP. Ranked play is something the game would most assuredly benefit from. However, there needs to be a balance of competitive and social experiences (Bungo, look to Halo!). As it stands now, I see no reason for Bungie to continue implementing SBMM aside from using us all as guinea pigs for Destiny 2's multiplayer. TLDNR: Nerf Fusion Rifles.

Personally I haven't seen any lag recently at all, and I enjoy skill based match making cause then it's much more of a challenge, but if you guys are going to whine about having a difficult match and not being able to totally destroy the enemy team then that's your choice, but your not gonna get any better vsing people below your level or way above your level. Skill based matchmaking is good
-
I am no longer seeing the lag I once did. Things have improved dramatically. Sure every so often I'll see a lag spike, but nothing like it was when they made it purely SBMM. I think in the perfect world skill based is best, but this isn't that world, but it's good that they have something of it in destiny. Though they have connection based as well.
-
Edited by Maximalism: 4/25/2016 11:54:01 PMYou're only hearing the whiney ones. Most either prefer skill-based, or dont give a shit either way. Also, refrain from trying to speak for the community, it's split on 100% of issues, and doesn't know what it wants. You speak for the people that care about connection-based matchmaking, thats it.
-
6 RepliesNo. Connection should be prioritized but SBMM should also play a part. Casuals shouldn't be paired with sweaty try-hards and pros shouldn't be matched with blueberries.
-
7 RepliesI don't demand it so you don't speak for everyone. In fact you probably speak for a small minority of sweaty players who don't care about the experience of anyone else. On the other end of the spectrum there are players like a few poor guys in my clan who are really bad at PvP and to them, that "non-sweaty" game you want to play sometimes is a curbstomp where you go unbroken and they die 23 times. IMO, as a casual and very average crucible player I think we're close to the sweet spot, lag is not as bad as it was a few months ago at the height of skill-weighting (which was a definite problem, no argument there) and at the same time, even when playing solo I don't see as many lopsided battles where I'm seriously reconsidering my personal policy of not ragequitting mid-match.
-
1 ReplyBut.....leave skill based matchmaking in Trials of O'Snipers please. Make the neck beard try-hards earn their flawless victories 😉
-
2 RepliesThe majority are average players and matches are just fine. Bungie isn't gonna cater to the few.
-
4 RepliesI disagree. The majority of games are close now where in the past there was blow out after blow out. SBMM has created very competitive matches.
-
I much prefer to play against my peers rather than hardcore pubstompers - and so do the majority of players. Without SBMM players would leave the crucible in droves and the game would die off a heck of a lot faster. If you're talking about Trials, where the intent is for only the top tier players to achieve top-tier success and casual players are discouraged from participating, then sure, CBMM all the way, I couldn't care less.
-
7 RepliesSeriously man. How can you sit there in your moms basement and say bungie doesn't listen? Bungie does nothing but nerf this, buff that, tweak here.....because of squeakers like YOU!!!!
-
I respect your opinion and agree that there are certainly issues in PVP that need to be addressed. However, please note that voicing your opinion does not stretch to you trying to speak on behalf of the community. Next time you want to post on my behalf, ask me first.

3 RepliesEdited by albinomachina: 4/25/2016 11:02:26 PMOh look, another "I'm scared to play people as good as me, so I'm going to make a post hating on SBMM and then blame it on lag" post. How original. Never seen one of these before. Not ever. edit - I've said it before, and I'll say it again. No-one in Halo complains about SBMM. You know why? Because it's not full of a bunch cry baby, special snowflakes that get butt hurt if they lose a game like Destiny is. Get off your mommy's tit, grow a pair of nuts, and stop whining you little bitch.
-
Skill-based matchmaking is the way to go Bungie, true competition for everyone. The top 10% are the ones making most of the noise. As far as the lag goes, it is a great thing putting down a lagswitcher, thier like mini bosses.
-
29 RepliesEdited by Appelfeller42: 4/25/2016 6:58:29 PMIm so tired of seeing your type here complaining. Your so good nothing is ever good enough, stop being a selfish punk and think about the millions of players worse then you that need a break. The game is fine, stop asking for changes, you've all ruined it enough already.
-
1 ReplySorry, but in order for Bungie to receive your feed back you be a streamer or from Reddit.
-
Remove it bungo!!

I don't mind it at all. I love sweaty match ups and truth be told I'm usually better with a group of randoms than my own friends in most iron banners. I definitely think they should tweak the whole connection based stuff but I also think they could almost entirely erase that problem by just not allowing wireless connections with these consoles. Most all people I play with that have problems are running consoles on wireless connections. To me wireless and gaming just don't mix.
-
Edited by RustyShackleford: 4/25/2016 11:12:47 PMAgreed, SBMM is dumb. Also making Trials even more sweaty. I have no issues going flawless but my everyday casual friends just can't when you got people that live on the game unemployed every day of the week playing.
