If you don't mind a direct plug into controller pair I like the XB1 brand stereo headset. Sounds much better than the ps brand and they are about $55.

I'll never understand how people will get so upset that they will damage items that cost a decent amount of money. Try turtle beach headsets. They're fairly strong and last a long time. The mics are pretty "echo-y" though.

Just get a pair of earphones with a mic I bought a pair of skullcandy earphones for $20 last year still work great and if I wanted to I can use on my phone so there's always that.
