Why Three Of Coins Should Not Be Nerfed (And Why The Destiny Community's Best Traits Get It Into Trouble)

Recently, Bungie Employee Cozmo replied to a thread concerning a Three Of Coins exploit, hinting that the drop rate for Exotics that they boost would soon be dropped. I feel this is a bad idea, and if the past is any indicator, I think Bungie already agrees with my reasons why. One of the defining traits of this community is how we adapt. If some new power weapon drops, we make a beeline. See Suros, Gjallerhorn. It's what keeps our Strikes and Raids running smooth and our Crucible streaks going. We also adapt to nerfs. See AR's (pre-2.0) and Fusion Rifles. If you nerf the drop rate for the Three Of Coins, even if the nerf is reasonable, a large portion of the community will never touch them again. They will be deemed not worth the coins or trouble, and the admittedly interesting idea Bungie had will end up just another failed experiment like Commendations. Nerfing the drop rate is not the answer. Cozmo's post also hinted (to me at least) that one solution Bungie is considering is increasing the amount of Strange Coins required for Xur's inventory. (See: "The Nine may be delighted you're blowing them all now") This too, is a bad idea because of another shining virtue of this community: We are tenacious. Any time Bungie has made a currency more valuable or scarce (or both) the community immediately develops a voracious hunger for them. If you lower the drop rate of Coins from Rare Engrams, increase the amount needed to purchase items from Xur, or implement any kind of forced-rarity upon them, the community will respond. All methods of farming those Blue Engrams will become major focuses for your average player. Chest exploits, "loot caves", etc. Basically all distractions from actually *playing the game* will spike, and the same mentality that created the first loot cave will return. The only solution that will not have an adverse affect on the way we play, or the mood of the Destiny Playerbase, is to patch the enemies themselves. All Bungie has to do is make sure the only Ultras are the ones at the end of Strikes and the Bosses in Raids. This way, the Three Of Coins remains a valuable consumable, and they encourage play of the precise activities that should award great loot: Strikes and Raids. Everybody wins.

    • Agreed, if it was a simple stack on top of the heroic strike playlist buff and you activate one each strike you dont get an exotic is perfect. I myself got terrible drops relatively speaking from my 70. 4 gauntlets, 4th horseman, and hawkmoon. While my friend spent 40, and got every major new exotic minus the telesco. Then i have another friend who with 60 got 5 alpha lupes while on his hunter. Some got great luck, and im slightly jealous, but it all comes around, ive also had 4-5 blues turn into legendarys in 3 days of not much playing.

        • I think you gave this "community" more credit than it deserves. ;) But I agree with your solution. However, I think I'd be on the fence with allowing the Ultras that spawn during patrols to drop exotics. Not sure how I feel about that one.

I agree with this but I can still see somebody on these forums crying that they can not farm for Exotics anymore.

        • I definitely agree. The last thing destiny needs is one less way to get loot but this three of coins and draksis method is going to kill the game since people are burning through content they would usually spend hours, weeks, months, or even years on doing. Bungie, don't kill the three of coins just take story bosses out of the equation.

        • I agree. The coins should have no effect on the mini ultras. Another way Bungie could do it.Though it may take a little more patching. Is making it a one coin daily cooldown. By taking a percentage of the coins being 'stackable', and putting it into just one coin use. With this Bungie has a few more options to play with such as. Would we [Bungie] keep the coin use on the mini ultras with this bigger cooldown. Or only useable on strike and raid bosses, because of the extra 'stackable' percentage. Then the added, how many should Xur sell. Keep it at 5? Or maybe cut it down to 3? In all, Bungie can fix this in many ways. I hope that the way they choose is reasonable for everyone.

While I agree that something should be done other than a simple nerf to drop rates, I fear your solution (although a good idea) might require a fair bit of time and testing to implement. Another solution I would suggest might be to add a cooldown timer to the three of coins itself, perhaps 5 minutes? This will decoupage farming and encourage uses of them once let strike (as I imagine they were intended).

          • All they need to do is put a 5-10 minute cool down on the consumable similar to ammo synths. This would prevent farming, but allow them to be used in strikes as intended.

            • I agree the biggest problem is the enemies they are being used on. If you had to do a strike for a small exotic chance, it would be pretty fair. The percent is probably too high. It seems now to be around 20% drop rate. That means roughly you get 1 exotic per 7 strange coins. At 10 percent at least it's 1 exotic per 14 strange coins. Still cheap compared to buying the guns but a significant investment and usage reward. People will still buy and use these so I don't buy your claim of that because... It's still better than RNG.
