Why Three Of Coins Should Not Be Nerfed (And Why The Destiny Community's Best Traits Get It Into Trouble)

Recently, Bungie Employee Cozmo replied to a thread concerning a Three Of Coins exploit, hinting that the drop rate for Exotics that they boost would soon be dropped. I feel this is a bad idea, and if the past is any indicator, I think Bungie already agrees with my reasons why. One of the defining traits of this community is how we adapt. If some new power weapon drops, we make a beeline. See Suros, Gjallerhorn. It's what keeps our Strikes and Raids running smooth and our Crucible streaks going. We also adapt to nerfs. See AR's (pre-2.0) and Fusion Rifles. If you nerf the drop rate for the Three Of Coins, even if the nerf is reasonable, a large portion of the community will never touch them again. They will be deemed not worth the coins or trouble, and the admittedly interesting idea Bungie had will end up just another failed experiment like Commendations. Nerfing the drop rate is not the answer. Cozmo's post also hinted (to me at least) that one solution Bungie is considering is increasing the amount of Strange Coins required for Xur's inventory. (See: "The Nine may be delighted you're blowing them all now") This too, is a bad idea because of another shining virtue of this community: We are tenacious. Any time Bungie has made a currency more valuable or scarce (or both) the community immediately develops a voracious hunger for them. If you lower the drop rate of Coins from Rare Engrams, increase the amount needed to purchase items from Xur, or implement any kind of forced-rarity upon them, the community will respond. All methods of farming those Blue Engrams will become major focuses for your average player. Chest exploits, "loot caves", etc. Basically all distractions from actually *playing the game* will spike, and the same mentality that created the first loot cave will return. The only solution that will not have an adverse affect on the way we play, or the mood of the Destiny Playerbase, is to patch the enemies themselves. All Bungie has to do is make sure the only Ultras are the ones at the end of Strikes and the Bosses in Raids. This way, the Three Of Coins remains a valuable consumable, and they encourage play of the precise activities that should award great loot: Strikes and Raids. Everybody wins.

  • or just a 5 min (or so) cool down like ammo synth... Under normal play (non-farming) you would be extremely unlikely to find an ultra in the next 5 min side note: Amazing how fast they want to patch something that could benefit players yet things that really work against players take forever to fix (heavy ammo armor bug anyone???, White nail/Hive Disruptor perk on Black hammer???/ CE/VOG glitches ???) Bungie - how about staying focused on fixing things that MATTER????

  • It shouldn't be nerfed, because this was a very special case. People had many hundred strange coins and could buy a bunch of TOCs. Now after this so-called exploit many of these people have less. And the price is just right! 21 strange coins will get you 15 TOCs, which gives you 1 exotic guaranteed, 3 if you're extremely lucky, and probably an average of 2. And these exotics are random and require you to grind 15 ultras. So with Xûr you can either buy one revealed exotic weapon for 23 coins, or you could pay 21 coins + work to get an average of 2 that *you don't know what is and could be for another class or you already own*. You even have a slight risk of getting naught. The problem isn't the Three of Coins, the "problem" is the large amount of Strange Coins collected by players, and I find that they deserve the "exploit" because of this.

    • Instead of nerfing, I would up the price. Make it so taking 5 three of coins costs slightly less than buying a weapon from xur. You'll be able to get exotics, any of them, but at a price.

    • A cool down timer fixes the problem of suicide-killing the boss at a checkpoint; no need to reduce drop rate.

      • Y not just put a 5 min cool down? That way u can't just kill yourself and do it immediately. That and no strike takes less than 5min so its more than enough time to get from boss to boss. Bump it if ya like, or don't.

        • Enjoy it while you can folks, I know I will. You know it will get nerfed and there is nothing the community can do about it. It happened to the Loot Cave and it happened to the HoW chests. The whole point of Destiny is to collect gear. If you get that gear too fast then you have no reason to play, at least most people won't. So that is why they nerf these things.

        • I think your solution is the route they'll take. Bungie is a business. A game developer. So they need to do two things. One, keep as many players happy as possible. Two, keep you grinding, thus playing. The 3 of Coins "exploit" hurts them. They probably won't nerf the drop rate, because that would undoubtedly infuriate players. However, they can't have players just farming exotics like that. It takes away a big incentive to keep playing. It's also the solution I would prefer.

This is ridiculous. I did the exploit and I already have everything I want. Why nerf the drop rate? So people who didn't exploit them are punished? Bungie blame yourselves for not selling anything worthwhile for us to spend coins on. I had hundreds piled up for a rainy day like last Friday. Now I have everything. And your answer is to punish others? That's a joke.

If you must make a change Bungie, let this be the one. That way we still get drops, people still buy coins, and people get encouraged to stay in strike playlists more even with the higher chance for purples. You -blam!-ed up with Field Scout, don't -blam!- up here.

          • Great post. An alternate solution that might be viable is limiting the amount you can buy. This way there is no need for increased grinding, nor does the 3 of coins lose any value. Ofc the limit shouldn't be too low, and I think 3 of coins can be 1 coin more expensive.

            • Nothing wrong with Ultras (wherever you find them) having the chance to drop an exotic. I think it's a great idea to be honest. The "problem" that makes it a cheese lovers dream is the exploit. Patch the story bosses so the mission ends when the boss dies - period. Having to rekill the boss if you die is dumb anyway. There will still be plenty of Ultras to kill but you won't have an infinite loop of "suicide-kill the boss and start back at the boss check point" for the give-it-all-to-me-now subset.

              • The public event "ultras" do not count even though they are way harder to kill. But spamming draksis some how counts.

                • I see no issue with this! You wanna stack coins two, 5 15 (someone has) go for it!! It's just like vegas! You wanna take the gamble, knock yourself out! Besides only the day one players have the stockpiles to pull it off anyways. On a side-note it's sad to see gambling make it to destiny before GTAV!! That's whack!

                • I have to agree with you. Making it to where it drops from strike ultras instead of story ones would fix the issue at hand with the item. You still have to burn about 14 strange coins for one exotic, so I think the drop rate for the item is fine, and after this weekend I think most of the wares for strange coins were depleted, (mine dropped from 200 to 70)

                • I definitely agree. The last thing destiny needs is one less way to get loot but this three of coins and draksis method is going to kill the game since people are burning through content they would usually spend hours, weeks, months, or even years on doing. Bungie, don't kill the three of coins just take story bosses out of the equation.

                • I think you gave this "community" more credit than it deserves. ;) But I agree with your solution. However, I think I'd be on the fence with allowing the Ultras that spawn during patrols to drop exotics. Not sure how I feel about that one.
