As a 30+ year gamer, and a father of two, I understand your dilemma. I don't like quitters. But when I ask my son to do something, he needs to get it done at the first possible opportunity. When it's getting to be dinner or bed time, something he's expecting, he needs to be sure he's not committed to something he can't get away from. This is not only respecting me and my wife, but respecting his friends. It's important to me that he values his time, but also the time of his peers and elders. Respect is a two way street, but it starts with the parents setting realistic expectations and following through them. Kids won't learn to respect if they aren't shown how.

More interesting will be when during an interview with a potential employer you are asked about whether you consider yourself a team player and you reply "well I was always the relic bearer or the swordbearer in my clan, so I'm used to taking on high pressure leadership roles inside a team, when everyone is relying on me to make the key play work." I imagine that your mum doesn't believe you are a pathological liar, she is probably just playing dumb because she could care less about your computer game as computer games are traditionally seen as having no transferrable skill set into real life and are therefore of zero value.... Maybe in 30 years the ability to effectively coordinate an online only team through the use of VOIP and avatars, will be invaluable...

My wife is an old school mud player so she understands completely. If she needs me for something or wants to show me something she'll just ask, "Are you someplace safe?" I did make her laugh when she asked if I was someplace safe during an Iron Banner match and I said, "Right now nowhere is safe." 😄

When I was much younger and playing early MMORPGs I had the same problem helping my parents understand the social commitment involved with online group activities in video games - especially since in the not-so-distant past group activities on consoles required the other players be sitting in the same room looking at the same screen. The inability to pause online games, when they were used to early console titles like Mario and Donkey Kong, was especially difficult for them to comprehend.
