OVERDUE: Old Business, Re: DLC, Non-DLC Players, Communication (Att: Bungie, DeeJ)

Since the launch of The Dark Below, non-DLC consumers of your product have been barred from the Nightfall/Weekly Strikes 2 weeks out of 5. On top of the Daily Missions that land on content from The Dark Below, the migration of certain Vanguard Strikelist rewards up to the Roc list, you have grievously picked the pockets of your playerbase and diminished the experience of the game they originally purchased. This conversation is long overdue. This conversation started on December 9th, with the release of The Dark Below and the initial outcry over non-DLC consumers being barred from Nightfall and Weekly strikes, and what that meant moving forward for Destiny. Then, clearly unprepared to deal with the backlash of this matter as well as controversy over the quality of content in The Dark Below, you pushed aside criticisms with a fluff End of the Year update and hurried off for the holidays. It is now January 6th, 2015, and you owe us a dialogue. If not that, you owe us at least a response. Some transparency, some communication, some advance notice of your game plan. You never even adequately addressed the uproar over the Exotic Upgrade System and what it exactly meant when you said you were conscious of player feedback. Talk to us, damn it. You've started to bleed out and you don't seem to know it.

  • May the good lawd bless one Batman Dobbins for taking the time to supply us all with another wonderful critique and narration of the State of Destiny over inspiring footage of folks with superior latency wrecking opponents nearly unmolested due to a good 1+ second lead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4OP1uAcfV4

  • I agree I would be more than mildly annoyed had I not bought the DLC. I like that the DLC guys get exclusive items and the new raid, strike and missions but you guys should still get to enjoy the vanilla game as it was before the DLC.

I can't believe these idiots who feel it's okay for Bungie to lock out players on content that they purchased. It's like me buying a car upfront with cash, but only have the dealership tell me 4 months later that 2 weeks out of a month I can't drive it, because they have the right make sure my car won't start up. I can't believe how many idiots post on these destiny forums

      • Disclaimers before I'm shot down/insulted: I have the DLC I'm in a full time job and can afford further DLCs I'm almost 37 I do not have a sense of entitlement Now that's over with, onto the main body of my post... I am very much in the camp of believing that Destiny should be offering an alternative Nightfall/Weekly Strike for those with just the 'vanilla' game. People who are only able to afford or even just want the original version of Destiny shouldn't be locked out of these weekly events completely. Battlefield, CoD, WoW, etc. all offer their vanilla content still or alternative playlists for those still without the DLC. My opinion is that DLC is optional but Destiny is pushing their customer base to it in more of a mandatory way. Let's be honest, when you take away the weekly events, there isn't a whole load of other 'fresh' content in a week. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for an alternative event for those without the DLC. Again, I say all of this as someone who has purchased the DLC, I just disagree with the route Destiny is taking.

        • Also, this is a lovely Kotaku article that touches on some outstanding and new problems, and briefly touches on how The Dark Below negatively impacted the standard Destiny game. They even suggest, and correctly, I think, that the DLC "doesn't feel optional" and that it's a hard-sold subscription-in-sheep's-clothing. http://kotaku.com/destiny-review-update-four-months-later-1678011068

          • I'm sorry but this is how an MMO works guys. New content comes out that makes the old obsolete. If you just wanted an fps I suggest call of duty. Titanfall is like 15$. But please stop whining to those of us who care about the game enough to pay for new content and support the franchise as a whole. Not being a dick, just maybe consider that this is the first console MMO.

          • If it were up to me people like you wouldn't even get new weapons and gear. All the new tagged gear is Croats end gear. You want it buy the dlc. You happy with your 300 attack rifile? No? Ok buy the dlc. Oh wait you get gear and guns we get even thought you didn't buy the dlc. So shtfu and enjoy gear you were given rather than bitch about the random rotation of playable extra content.

              • Quick question just to see where your head it at. Do you plan not never purchasing the DLC "Expansions" ? If so I believe that you are doing yourself a HUGE disservice and you will miss out on a lot of upcoming content. 1) The Dark Below 2) House of Wolves 3) Comet 4) Vex pt. 2 5) Forge of the Gods At some point I feel like you are going to have to bite the bullet and either pay for the DLC "Expansions" or stop playing the game.I understand your frustration but it has been well known that Destiny was going to be expanding through DLC content. You have to remember that this is an MMO style console game and the patches, balance changes, weapons, armor and gear updates are mostly accessible for non-DLC consumers...There's no subscription fee. I don't feel like Destiny was designed for "non-DLC" consumers. It was designed to make money. Again I understand your frustration. And I agree that it sucks that you are barred from Nightfalls / Weekly strikes and rewards. But at some point you are either going to have to A) Deal with it or B) Purchase the additional content. You are speaking with your wallet and that's a good thing. But ultimately that is not going to make Bungie / Activison deviate from there program. I think it's time for you to pick up a different game mate. Eventually your going to get left behind.

                • I personally think that this game without dlc is just finished, so I've in plan to buy all because all my team do that and we like play this game togheter. But watt you say is true and only true. Is a shame that the new and old contend aren't divide in case of nightfall and daily. This game is based on the loot , yes I'm having fun at play the strikes and wathever but without a trophy this not work. I play cod zombie over and over so the repetitivy is not a problem but without a goal (high rounds or achiviemets for Easter eggs) this not work. The goal is the exotics, and the principal font is the nightfall, vog loot is still broken and give you weapons 1.0, so sad. Lock the nightfall for how didn't buy dlc for me is let people back. Hope in a fix.

                • You say you have lost content? How did the old missions disappear? Could you only do those missions if they were nightfalls? No? Then you haven't lost anything you can still play those same missions all they did was add the new maps to the rotation and everyone is flipping their shit. What would be the point of getting the dlc if we couldn't challenge the new missions in nightfall mode? All that would do is get people to bitch about not doing anything with the new missions after you finish the story. Lets just be honest nothing has been "stolen" from you the only reason you guys are upset is about not getting one more try at loot ( or 3 tries in most peoples case). Just remember it could be a lot worse if they really wanted to "force" you to get the DLC you guys would all be 28s trying to beat Atheon. Be happy that you already are getting handouts. Free 31, Free weapons and you can still do your nightfall every other week. It's true what they say you can't please everyone especially when all you children do is complain about everything. Either play your lame ass game or go cry in the dark alone stop polluting the forums with all this nonsense.

                  • Here's my argument with this whole Dlc nonsense. First, people without the Dlc should not be able to rank past 30, nor have any new weapons, gear, missions, etc. They should however still have access to their normal content, untouched, and essentially frozen in its pre Dlc state. This is a vary tall order though, one that programming wise is a complete nightmare. The easiest way around it is to have an area of the tower dedicated to new Dlc owners vendors, and quest givers. This way, the nightfall and heroic would grant the expansion packs relevant shards/energy as well which has been my primary Dlc gripe as I sit with full raid gear, 49 radiant shards away from 32, but with 39 radiant energy in my inventory. Raid tonight gave me the helm, energy, 3 shards, and another gauntlet which I broke down to get me enough shards to upgrade one slot. But anyway, yes they could have done it better, but be thankful for what you have, when it comes to mmo's generally non dlc/expansion players are left to rot until they upgrade.

                      • And now you can realize this will be the same way with the next four expansions! Hey guess what HoW adds 1 more strike Comet adds 4 more Then the the after that add 1 each. Thatll be 8 strikes total that will be in rotation. So if you want to keep enjoying the game....buy the flipping DLC. (Of course supposedly comets free but who knows) This is how the game will work. Dont like it? Stop playing.

                      • So we're talking about $20 right? Clearly people are upset because they love the game, they're obsessed or addicted or whatever or they just really enjoy playing and see what they can encounter next. So for something that you can't put down, is $20 that hard to scrounge up? If all of you whiners had saved five lousy dollars each week you would have enough to buy the DLC right now. Or you could have put aside ONE -blam!-ING DOLLAR a week since the game released. And voila. I ain't mad tho.

What about the part where non-DLC owners were able to upgrade to 31 without buying the new content? While they miss out on a weekly event (and let's be honest the rewards aren't typically very good) they also got something free out of this deal. I would argue being able to upgrade to 31 is better in this trade off. It allows folks to be better equipped for the VOG, which provides way better rewards when compared to the weekly strikes.

Both group A and B bought this game at full price, group B then purchased ADDITIONAL content, bungie then blocks group A from playing content that originally available in the aforementioned purchase. If you don't understand how this is wrong and borderline illegal you should spend more time In school and less time using daddies credit card to buy dlc.
I have the DLC
Next time it's up, take the hour or two you would spend doing the strikes, work some OT or do some extra chores, earn $20, and buy it. Problem solved. Activision is just trying to teach you some responsibility.
