I found that if you are carrying the relic during the Templar boss fight, if you go too high up, the relic will be removed from you and returned back where it originally spawns. I first noticed it when trying to get the relic to the top, where people spawn before the fight, then again when taking it into the "cubby hole" where people usually go to shoot the back left oracle.
