You can wield the sword of crota on earth patrol.
In case anyone doesn't know where, it's by the first spawn. Go down the stairs (where the 3 Hive majors normally are) and you fill find a whole bunch of hive running around and a knight that has the sword. Kill him and the sword is yours to wield for a few minutes before it disappears.

That's where I found it too. However, looking at Destiny clips on Xbox Upload, it looks like the ritual can spawn in a number of different locations, usually dark places like caves.
