Are the Guardians total a-holes? As in: are we the bad guys?

Yes

Titans, were the greek pantheon's total d*cks, fighting and losing the war against the awesome and just gods, the Olympians. Warlocks, in the legends of old and in modern fantasy, are those who corruptively use magic destructively instead of creatively. Hunters, away from the usually heroic Rangers, are predatorial. As in Hunter is the literal equivalent of predator, someone who kills or traps prey. All of the guardian classes have names that in history and fiction is usually reserved for the antagonists, not the protagonists. The name and description of "bad guys". Additionally, our ONLY meaningful interaction with other intelligent species in our solar system is to kill them. An undead army of killers. Sure, the alien races have attacked us, but did they really? The Hive seems wretched and zombie-like to us, but their most capable fighters are classified as their Acolytes and Knights that fight their battles. Their leaders are Exalted, with titles like Wizards and Princes. Does the Hive see themselves as noble? Are they seeing themselves how we view the legends of Arthur and Merlin, chasing down The Traveller, an ancient foe, to bring peace to the galaxy once again? How about The Fallen? Did they lose their Empire to the ravages of The Traveller, their own personal Hitler? Does The House of Kings and The House of Winter lead the final hunt, with their Captains, their Servitors, their Lords and their Primes in a valiant chase that they hope will echo in their legends for eons when the traveller and it's undead army is finally defeated? How about the Vex? They can't be good, can they? An organic race of religious robots, going to Venus to protect something they consider at least a Guru, and at most a God. Wouldn't humanity be as forceful to claim a holy relic? Wouldn't humanity be angered when the relic was destroyed, during prayer? I bet parts of humanity, the humanity we know, would to exactly the same. At this point it should be unecessary to point out the valiant vanguard, the Space Marines of the known alien universe, The Cabal. Bravely fighting hostile aliens, chasing down the evil that is The Traveller, with their mighty, well trained, brave army. Their legionarys, centurions, phalanxes, psions and colossi. Under the banner of any Primus, they seem hell-bent on putting and end to the evil magic of the Traveller, it's evil undead army (us) and anyone else who comes in the way. Each faction in Destiny could have a game or a series of books of their own, their own noble purposes, and we do not have a clue. Warlocks, Hunters and Titans, the unholy, undead army, infused with the mysterious powers of the lifeless Traveller. Are we the badguys? Are we the D*cks of the universe? What do you think? Please come with suggestions either way. Personally, I think this way of looking at it is pretty cool.

  • One of the grimoire cards literally says as much. Someone had a vision of the black garden, and the Gardner practically tells her she is an evil zombie and to screw off. I'm paraphrasing.

    • Well the cabal were just sitting on mars leaving earth and the tower alone until we went and started blowing their shit up. And no one knew about the vex until we went and woke them, we are kinda like the futures terrorists. We want things back the way they were and don't care how things are now, we will do whatever we want because dinklebot tells us to. Oh and ghost just happens to be a voice in your head with powers, reminiscent of many religious ideologies.

Zeus killed his father and waged war on the titans before Zeus the titans were in charge. Just saying. The Romans were imperial, when they fell they left a religion to rule the world from beyond the grave, technically evil, to this day the Roman Empire has a stranglehold on politics rivaled by two other empires of the sun. Warlocks have a religious connotation in reality, as we have yet to discover real magic. The theory is sound but one mans evil is another's good.

              • hmm... A post based on the crucible master watching and debating sounded good. Also a thought to that civil war, if the guardians that chose their side, FWC for example. What would they do to those that lost?Would we exile them and execute them where we first started off in the game? Or would we send them on a suicide mission and get them killed (like the dead guardian on the moon).

The Speaker could also be a bad guy, or a dark guardian. Maybe the humans decided to steal all of the Traveler's technology for themselves, and it was we who brought it to Earth and dismantled it. And since the Traveler could not speak for himself anymore, we decided to rewrite history and say that we are the good guys and that the Speaker guy is trying to heal the Traveler. And maybe those alien races got pissed that we destroyed their god and are now trying to wipe us out to reclaim it. This would at least explain why haven't the alien races nuked the Traveler already (as seen in Angry Joe's review ;p), and why the Speaker is so vague when talking about the past ('cause it didn't happen like they say). I mean, surely a race that is able to destroy planets or use moons as ballistic weapons should be able to at least destroy an immovable target.

                  • Remember that names of creatures could be the names humanity calls them. Take Halo with the Elites, Grunts etc, their true names were not revealed until later. I know Destiny is different from Halo but the same thinking could still be there. That said it is an interesting theory you have on the story.

                    • Yeah, it's something I think about as well. And this Grimoire entry puts it into chilling perspective: “This is the vision I had when I leapt from the Shores of Time and let myself sink: I walked beneath the blossoms. The light came from ahead and the shadows of the flowers were words. They said things but I will not write them here. At the end of the path grew a flower in the shape of a Ghost. I reached out to pluck it and it cut me with a thorn. I bled and the blood was Light. The Ghost said to me: You are a dead thing made by a dead power in the shape of the dead. All you will ever do is kill. You do not belong here. This is a place of life. The Traveler is life, I said. You are a creature of Darkness. You seek to deceive me. But I looked behind me, down the long slope where the blossoms tumbled in the warm wind and the great trees wept sap like blood or wine, and I felt doubt. When my Ghost raised me from the sea there was a thorn-cut in my left hand and it has not healed since.”

                        • I can see the Fallen maybe being seen as not so bad, but the Hive are definitely not even remotely good. They may see themselves as good, serving their gods and whatnot, but their methods betray their true nature. They kill and corrupt everything they come into contact with, which is why that weird black fungus like stuff grows wherever they are. To me, they seem a lot like Necromorphs from Dead Space, with their conversion methods being mentioned on occasion (like the creation of ogres). They are also so bad that even the Fallen are afraid of them, as evidenced by the locked facility in Old Russia. The Cabal on the other hand are pretty brutal, and have even been known to simply blow up entire planets if they deem them as a problem. They don't even seem all that interested in the Traveler, just in conquering worlds to add to their empire, much like the Romans were more preoccupied with conquering Europe than much else. The Vex are not exactly evil, but not necessarily good. They are that ordered neutral group, and seem focused on that age old robotic concept of eliminating the illogical organics in order to build a perfect, logical, mechanical universe, even going so far as to turn entire planets into machines (which seems hardly necessary, especially with how frequently they do it).

                          • Repeating myself, since my original comment was completely buried: You can't gauge a being's morality of good or evil without understanding their culture or motives. Calling the Hive, Cabal, or Vex "evil" or the Guardian's "good" is pointless, because someone will always oppose their ideals and call themselves "good" in comparison.
Example: the Cabal are known to destroy planets that get in their way. Similarly in Halo, the Primordial Humans were known to do the same. But as it turns out, they were exterminating the Flood. What if the Cabal are exterminating the Vex?
When talking about the philosophy of another being, you can never speak about their ideals without holding them with bias against your own, and comparing them as less important. Instead if debating whether we're right or wrong: focus on protecting what you think is right. Which, speaking about this game, it's the Light.

                            • I have had some similar thoughts on this. For one I'm not sure that the Hive isn't some abomination gone out of control though. Physically the bear some traits in common with the Fallen but there's this one statement, I may not have it exact but "Once there was a time when the Hive threatened to take over the earth, so we gave up the moon." Not to mention that the Fallen seem fixated on locking them away and or exterminating them. The Cabal do seem to carry themselves with a sense of honor in a way. I believe we will find ourselves fighting along side them at some point way down the road. They appear to carrying out a recon mission of some sort on Mars and obviously they seem to have a strong need to shut down Rasputin. I believe they are setting up a tactical location there to address something bigger. The Fallen I'm unclear on. Perhaps they are here to serve as a chaotic neutral. An empire divided into many houses. I may be wrong, but I believe the Fallen who stand with the Queen look to bear the markings of the house of Exile, obviously meaning they do not intend to carry out the same purposes as the greater collective. Also, if we used captured Fallen to twist them into what was to become the Hive the ...yea...they have good reason to hate us. The Vex may be the one truly evil race in the game. They are found everywhere but the moon. They are fought by us, the Fallen and the Cabal. Even the exo stranger refers to them as something so evil that it hates other evil. Being creatures based in technology they may have a strong link to the Warmind Rasputin, perhaps even the physical extension of it's will. It's also worth mentioning that it is stated in the game itself that they were worshiping the heart of darkness because it was beyond their ability to comprehend. With all that covered we now have the Guardians. Magic wielding warriors who were brought back from the long dead to carry out the tasks given to them by those who speak on behalf of the Traveler. Essentially, having NO CLUE what has transpired or is about to take place other that what they are told to do. Our real task...our real and true Destiny...to seek out the truth behind every facade we encounter. The Tower may in fact be the primary facade. Placed high up above a city that we can no yet reach and where much of the truth may yet be revealed. A device of unknown purpose deliberately put in place within prime view of the Traveler and at it's helm, The Speaker. A fully cloaked figure that puts me in the mind of Emperor Palpatine. And, last the Traveler itself. Maybe all that we are told about it is true. Tales of how it ushered in the Golden Age and how it sought to defend a city...but from who? Did we as earthlings capture it to use for our own selfish wishes waging war with any race who even got close to our Golden Egg...that would be so much like us really, now wouldn't it?

                            • It's a bad sign when a game has such a scarce story that fans have to make up conspiracies to help make sense of it. That said, I doubt Bungie put as much thought into the story as you did with this one post.
