Do you believe Destiny is a MMO? We have all had an opportunity to play this game for a while, so it would be nice to know how the community feels about Destiny.
Edit* During alpha and beta, the forum was filled with discussions whether Destiny is an MMO or not. This thread is to see whether people's opinion of the game has changed.

It's still a very complicated question. I'm still leaning towards no although it does have a lot in common with MMO's but the overall presentation... I just still don't feel comfortable calling it an MMO. I do believe that it did create a new genre though.

12 RespuestasEditado por Saboteur-6: 9/19/2014 2:56:00 AMI'm so tired of this question man because what people are REALLY trying to say is that Destiny isn't like what's commonly been associated with MMORPG's. Basically if it didn't look like Everquest and a World of Warcraft then it's not an MMO and that's just outright nonsense. Listen all the word MMO means is Massive Multiplayer Online, which Destiny INARGUABLY is. That's not subjective opinnion. Now that being said, if you want to point out that Destiny LACKS in multiple aspects COMMON in established MMORPG's (like World of Warcraft) THEN that's a different conversation. Chat / Communication functions come to mind. EDIT: Everyone is hung up on the word "Massive" as a genre descriptor as being synonymous with one big persistent world shared SIMULTANEOUSLY with other people. Destiny pushes aginast the naming convention because IT DOES THAT, it's just not simultaneous. As many have pointed out there are constantly NEW people dropping in and out of your instanced map.

Borderlands isn't an mmo. This isn't an mmo. Its a coop FPS with RPG style progression and limited social aspects.
-
2 RespuestasMore of an mmo than an fps.
-
1 RespuestaI think Bungie even says they do not consider it a MMO game.
-
Destiny is both an MMO and not an MMO at the same time. It has a lot of mmo aspects to it, such as random item drops, farming/grinding for those said drops or for materials to upgrade/build materials. However, there are a lot of other elements to the game, similar to fps and RPG games.
-
2 RespuestasYes it is. It's just a bit of a new breed. People voting no either haven't played an mmo or are in denial.
-
Its a shooter with MMO aspects. Mainly the armor system and all the grinding. The inky thing is it isn't "massive". 12 players max on a server isn't massive lol.
-
1 RespuestaOf course it is.

Editado por RagedHalomaniac: 9/19/2014 2:11:21 AMCalling this game a MMO is about the dumbest thing ive ever heard. There is nothing "Massively Multiplayer" about it. 16 people is obviously not "Massively Multiplayer." It certainly has some MMO aspects that are usually in the MMO category but that doesnt make it an MMO.
-
due to constant errors and ghost towns i hardly call it an mmo... there is no multiplayer and unlike other mmo's i dont get kicked just as i load my character

4 RespuestasEditado por CharlesDaBro: 9/19/2014 2:20:57 AM3 people in a fire team is not an mmo.

Editado por Krevorn: 9/19/2014 1:10:02 AMIf you would of asked me years ago, I would of said definitely no. Asking me now, I say no. But, the way real MMOs are heading with all the "phasing" (WoW calls it CRZ rofl)(killing the whole massive in MMO just to scrape every penny from server costs), in the future Destiny may be considered a MMO (sadly). Disclaimer: I love Destiny and I love MMOs both. Just really hating all the phasing becoming the norm in MMOs.
-
It's definitely got MMO elements but no it is not an MMO itself
-
No. Maybe unless mmorpg means miniature multiplayer online rpg. Only 16 people able to be in one place at a time is not massive. It has mmo traits and uses many characteristics but Bungie made sure not to call it that since then people would expect stuff like 24 player raids or massive public events with like, 50 people in it.
-
I feel like it is a mix of things, rpg, mmo, shooter. It has a shared world with being able to bump into random people and have fireteams, makes it an mmo, also raids and stikes, and dailys and weeklys and stuff. RPG in the fact of skill trees, and shooter in mechanics and pvp. I think the real problem is we try to label it just one thing when it really is a MMOFPSRPG.
-
There's a dance emote. 'Nuff said.
-
I believe it is, or at the very least the beginnings of one. MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online. I would Drop the Massive and keep it simply as Multiplayer Online. To be Specific, i would classify Destiny as a Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter Roleplaying Game, or an Mo-FPS-PG.
-
No, and even bungie has said that it's an open world shared shooter. Damn media pumping lies. It's not an MMO since we aren't talking about hundreds or thousands in one server roaming around.
-
Editado por DanielKBoom: 9/18/2014 3:44:37 AMI think they are testing the waters. If Bungie did a full blown MMO would the fan base follow? They have the tech to do anything they want with this game. I call it a MMO on training wheels. A scaled down MMO. Some big things are missing. The ability to communicate with other players outside of your party. A party finder. A matchmaker. I am waiting to see where they go with this. The gameplay is solid, I enjoy it. The graphics are amazing. My only issue, I want to communicate ( easily ) with my fellow players.
-
5 RespuestasNo, it is not. It's a shared world shooter with a few MMO elements that enrich the experience but are certainly not the focus of its design.
-
Still no
-
I think the social aspect is an mmo but the levelling system is like a rpg and the last bit is diablo styled games with new loot around the corner to increase your stats so I don't really know what to call it
-
I think it's a sort of MMO FPS game. It has a crapton MMORPG aspects but it's not quite there. It's a bit in the middle. It's definitely it's own little type of MMO though.
-
Not but it is trying way to hard to be.
-
Shared world shooter. It has mmo bits to it but not exactly an mmo. It's a newish breed
