You couldn't buy stuff like this a while back without spending a lot of money. A lot of new stuff has been around for a while, but it wasn't practical to manufacture it for the majority of the population.

Because the technology wasn't there. In order to have VR you need precise tracking of the head and very small, very high-res displays to fit in a headmounted display. And that's just the hardware side. With current computers you can have very believable, realistic worlds created in software, with stereo-3D and high frame rates. There was no push for small, hi-res displays by tech-companies until smartphones took off in a colossal way. Since the arrival of the iPhone, HD Displays have gotten smaller and smaller, and cheaper and cheaper. Now they're small enough, light enough and have a high enough resolution to make virtual reality possible. VR used to be astronomically expensive for a far inferior experience. Now it's both cheap and a quality experience. In summary, it's a good time to be into games.

Nintendo did one, it was a pair of big binoculars on a stand in black white 8 bit. Now it's 360 view and HD 1080p resolution you can wear. That's the difference.
