Xbox One Might Be Getting Graphics Performance Patch
Microsoft may be looking to improve the Xbox One’s graphics performance, a new report from Hothardware.com suggests. Currently, 10% of the machine’s GPU is reserved for the motion-sensing Kinect, but a new patch could loosen that restriction. Sources say Microsoft could allow developers to make use of 8% of that, with the final 2% reserved for voice commands. Xbox One’s performance has been coming under scrutiny since launch, most recently with the news that Tomb Raider: Definitive edition runs at a higher framerate on PS4. Here’s the statement from a Microsoft spokesperson, provided to Forbes: “At Xbox, we are always thinking of what’s next for our platform and looking for new ways to innovate. We believe Kinect is an integral part of the Xbox One platform and its use of voice and gesture lead to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for consumers. Beyond that, we have no further comment” Noncommittal, naturally, but notice what it doesn’t say. Normally I’d expect to hear “Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation,” the boilerplate answer for the vast majority of reports. It leads me to believe there might be some truth in it. It would certainly make sense — games that aren’t making heavy use of the Kinect, for example, the aforementioned Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, could easily make good use of extra processing power. All of this number competition has added up to some bad press for Xbox One with core gamers, so a little more juice could assuage frame rate issues. The Kinect is arguably the crucial element of the Xbox One — it’s the reason that it costs $100 more, its voice and gesture controls are one of the most important features of the platform’s entertainment lineup, and it’s the biggest differentiating feature from the PS4. Even so, few launch titles have taken any real advantage of it. The one Kinect-centric game, Fighter Within, sits at an impressive 24 on Metacritic — that’s one mixed review and 37 negative reviews. I’ve tried to use Xbox Fitness, which works fine as a normal exercise video, but is hopeless when it comes to recognizing anything I’m doing. The voice commands lose a little luster once you find yourself repeating “Xbox, Pause” for the fifth time. All of that is going to take a lot of work to fix. This change would say something a little different — it reminds us that the Xbox One is not just a Kinect machine. It’s a traditional console as well, and traditional games should be able to use it as such.
If this is true, it'll be another reason to shut up the Sony drones.

I love how sony wants to tout hardware like its state of the art... Both these systems are a far cry from what they should have been in this day and age... I chose xbox because of Titanfall, Halo and the HDMI pass through for cable. I have nothing against PS4 and I would eventually like to own one, but for now I had to roll with xbox. I love how everyone on here wants to hold their preference or purchase over the next guy like its a Lamborghini, guys... It's a 400 to 500 video game console. Please quit acting like you bought a cray super computer. Within two to three years, the common smart phone will boast more power and higher resolutions than both of these consoles.

    • I like the kinect, never had a lot of issues with it recognising my commands. Not saying it couldn't use improvement, it definitely needs some issues worked on but overall I think it could open up new experiences in gaming.

Shame that Forbes went from being a respected publication to a crowdsourced blognews site that is arguably less reliable and less ethical than even HuffPo.

        • This doesn't mean that the Xbox One will become more powerful than PS4, it will be an improvement. It will mean that games will have a more stable framerate but it won't match PS4.

Maybe they should have -blam!-ing realised they were releasing a piece of shit ages ago and actually planned around that, rather than waiting for the whole world to turn around and tell them their games look like ass. The marketing department at Microsoft is an utter farce. How on earth OP sees this as a positive is beyond me. HURRDURR LETS PATCH OUT SHIT AND LETS DOWNLOAD MORE RAM WHILE WE'RE AT IT Beyond retarded.

While the PS4 will pretty much remain the same.

                  • If you understood anything about what is inside of the Xbox One, you'd understand that there is no excuse for it to not be running Tomb Raider at 60FPS in 1080p. It seems like a lot of third party developers aren't putting in the time, because every jaw-dropping beautiful game I've seen on Xbox One is first party.

They may be increasing it, but that doesn't mean that it'll be as powerful as the PS4. You're taking the context completely out of proportion. Plus, it's only an 8% performance increase, which is not a lot at all. They already shipped the Xbox One overclocked a bit (or they bumped it up to stock speeds, whereas before it was underclocked). Not much performance improvements can be gained on the hardware side at this point.

Just wait until they activate the Cloud.... Once the Cloud technology is activated, it's estimated that games should be able to run at 7K resolutions at 682 FPS. MS knows what they're doing. 6v6 and bots was just the beginning. Prepare your anuses.

Microsoft should've scrapped the kinect for the Xbox one. Then they should've taken the money saved from that, put it into more powerful hardware. Then the could've been up to par with or even surpass the PS4. I'm not a fanboy, I'm just stating facts.

                            • 2% was reserved for voice and 8% reserved for video. Now the 8% for video is being given to developers if they want it. So that means developers are going to be able to take away features from the Xbox one. Whatever that 8% was being used for could be gone in most games in the future. The big question is what exactly was that 8% doing? Snap? window in window stuff? On a side note the 8% could get 1-3fps probably making tomb raider be more steady at 30fps or maybe it could use that power to be able to run full resolution effects or not drop below 1080p. Would be a step up for Xbox one players but not anywhere near threatening the crown.

While its some good news for X1 owners, it makes little difference. You can't patch hardware. PS4 has the undeniable advantage there, and isn't being weighed down by the Kinect and 3 bloated OS's. Sony will have the graphics advantage this gen. That much has been clear for a while now. Shouldn't matter much to X1 owners since they are buying it for exclusives / Kinect / TV / etc. Will mean less sales for X1 compared to the PS4 though, and will make life harder for Xbox fanboys.

Well, it's something I suppose. 8% is barley anything, and the gap between other aspects of the consoles is still too large to make a significant difference in visuals/performance.
