As you all know, Today Gameinformer released a video interview in which they sat down with Bungie’s lead for Halo 3 multiplayer, Lars Bakken, to talk about competitive multiplayer in Destiny. At one point the interviewer asked,
Would you say the multiplayer matches are faster then halo games, how would you compare the speed?
Lars Bakken responds saying,
Definitely faster! if we were to talk about lethality, its certainly more lethal then Halo. When you catch a guy with his pants down you can take him out really quickly, and that's not even including using a heavy weapon or super to do that but, generally your primary assault class weapons are going to do a little more damage then... then what we had in Halo.
Interviewer then asked,
Whats the reason for that?
Lars Bakken says,
Combat resolution is FUN. Getting into combat and having it end is FUN, its satisfying for both sides... and its not all the time you know. Good players are still gonna be able to get away some of the time but its a little hard now
Okay, one of the reasons i personally don't love Cod is because the player that gets the kills are the players you saw their opponent first. From what you guys just read, it looks like the same concept. In Halo you have time to plan out each of your fights and you have time to react so the best man out is usually the person with the skills and not the person you shot first. What do you guys think? • For me, Halo 2 BR Battles were perfectly balanced and satisfying as hell! So definitly slow paced ftw!

  • I hope multiplayer won't be too fast. I'd like battles to have a strategy and enough time to recover from your mistakes.

    • I don't think we have enough information about Destiny to be completely sure. Games can be super fast paced but have much slower kill times, the biggest example probably being Quake. The movement in that game is super intense yet it takes like 2 rocket shots to kill somebody, and that's if you're actually good enough to do 2 close-range hits. If you get the first shot on somebody with a BR in Halo 2, they rarely got away. I think the thing you don't have to worry about is super fast kill times like COD. I'm thinking the movement in Destiny is more present and dynamic, with things like sliding, double jumping, and others. They did say there's armour and health, so I'm sure it's more like 4-shot BR kill times in Halo 2, like 1.6 seconds or so.

    • 1-combat resolution is fun.(ex:swat) 2-combat is fun.(ex:assassination) I'd say, combat is fun, combat resolution is satisfying. What is better? it's a matter of personal preference. What kind of player are you, what do you look for in a game? There's no good (or bad) answer.

I'd need to try it for myself to decide. I will say that if you go back and re-play older Halos, those kill-times do feel a bit on the slow side. I noticed/realized recently that 343i sped them up in Halo 4. I'll also admit that there is nothing more frustrating than having someone dead-to-rights and they somehow manage to escape.

      • i like having the time needed to react to a threat that hasn't flanked me or killed me from behind. In CoD even if you have good skills it doesn't matter because its always a shoot first and ask questions later kind of game.

I'm definitely a fan of longer kill times. For me, the resolution isn't the fun part, it's the maneuvering. There's nothing better than knowing you're about to lose a fight, dropping down to some cat walk below you, running through some tunnels and circling back to kill the guy who initially attacked you. Or, within combat, being able to jump on something or take a lift, and then using your gained height to confuse your enemy and again take him out. I could go on forever. It's all about what happens inside the combat loop. Actually killing the other guy is fun, sure, but if it was all about the resolution I could just go kill bots in some twitch shooter.

          • Lars also mentions a health system similar to ODST where you have Armor then Health. Which sounds like gameplay speed is going to fall somewhere between Halo and CoD/Battlefield, so expect kills to be take some time and a couple of consistent shots so you have time to do some maneuvering but not so long that someone can get away and live after the first shot or so. I honestly think ODST will have the closest approximation to the time it will take to kill you. And I hope this health system makes it into the final game in order to give Destiny a unique feel and style of play.

          • The reason why I dislike halo 4 is because it's so much more fast-paced than 3/reach.

Less health means that you need to react quicker and strategize more. And more health means that there will be more skill involved, if your good enough you can turn a negative situation to a positive.

          • I'm used to destroying everyone with a triple K/D on CoD so I'm not going to complain about the faster pace. Halo vets though probably won't be quite as used to the change.
Okay, one of the reasons i personally don't love Cod is because the player that gets the kills are the players you saw their opponent first.
Sounds like you need to work on being the player that sees people first.
In Halo you have time to plan out each of your fights and you have time to react so the best man out is usually the person with the skills and not the person you shot first.
Yes, if the skill you're talking about is accuracy over time. However if you are more concerned with skills of stealth and detection, then Call of Duty would be the game where the player with the most skill wins. Remember, just because a game focuses on a different set of skills than you're used to needing, doesn't mean it doesn't take skill to play. Skilled Call of Duty players don't just happen to see other players first. It's not just luck. Skilled Call of Duty players guarantee they see other players first.

            • Its sounds like a Battlefield setup. If you are behind someone, you'll win most of the time. 1 on 1 will go either way, while being quicker than halo but not a 2 shot kill like cod unless you get a crit or something.

            • Well if you think about this it makes sense. Remember players have that movement focus now. It will be easier to escape, so you have to balance that, make it easier to kill. Nothing would be more frustrating then when your shooting at someone and they teleport that short distance and get away

              • I saw it as simply faster kills than Halo, but with shields and health bars probably slower than CoD, which seems like a perfect mix.
