As a hyper liberal commie socialist hippe I have to say: WTF.
You would think that this would be a easy problem with a common sense fix, that nobody in Congress can say no removing junk food items from qualifying for Food Stamps.
But no. It's not.
The food industry fiercely opposes nutrition standards.
Of course the food industry would oppose the standards. They rely on poor people killing themselves on their unhealthy shit to stay fat and happy in the monetary sense. God forbid they have some -blam!-ing morals and propose people eat reasonable portions.
House Republicans adopted almost the entire food stamp plank of the conservative Heritage Foundation - work requirements for able-bodied adults, drug testing and big funding cuts - except for a ban on junk food.
And of course the Republicans don't have the -blam!-ing backbone to push for reasonable or common sense cuts. Instead they want to spend more money drug testing everyone using Food Stamps to make sure they are using.
"Why is it," Simon said, "that we're OK telling women what to feed their children on WIC, and certainly we're fine telling schools what to feed children, but somehow food stamps get a big pass?"
And of course the hypocrisy isn't lost on me.

Curse blacks.

See, the liberals are just as totalitarian as republicans. I hate them both.

13 RespuestasEditado por Gaara444: 12/4/2013 12:24:07 AMI hate big daddy nanny state telling me what I'm allowed or not allowed to eat. Now with that being said, I think this is just asinine. I'm sure those same people on food stamps can get some sort of healthier options with those food stamps but choose Cheetos and Pepsi anyways. While I believe that it's somebodies personal responsibility to eat healthy and not have the Government tell you what to eat, if you're going to live off the government, you should at least be given shit you don't like (but is healthy) as drive to get out of living off the government.
-
Ban junk food, alcohol, tobacco, etc
-
2lolberal4me
So this is what a Halo 4 fanboy is like...
-
I feel like if you take junk food off of food stamps people on food stamps will try to get a job to pay for junk food.
-
am i the only one who thinks people should get drug tested for food stamps and the food shouldn't be junk food? it should be what the government deems healthy?
-
Take away junk food, forcing those dependent on stamps to buy healthier food, which should make for a healthier population, reducing the burden on medical clinics and hospitals for obesity/health related maladies. Win win.
-
>ban everything but junk food stamps >each stamp is now worth more calories >stamp payment obligation drops 90% because all food stamps are worth loads more calories >Use extra money to pay off debt >fix economy >Get re-elected forever >Amend constitution with super-majority for infinite national power >Make America fascist >Divert all funds single handedly to NASA to create moonbase >build laser on moonbase >win WW3 >win the real game civilization In all seriousness, it may be hypocritical, but it's not the government's goal to provide a nutritional diet, just one that can sustain you.
-
Oh dear lord, 70% of Americans are overweight! D: Usually they only quote the obesity figure (30%) for adults and I know there is a significant difference between overweight and obese...but this still shocks me :-|
-
And people like you who think they can boss us around needs to get out of the country. I don't have food stamps, fast food is the only affordable option for me and even then I can only eat one meal a day.
-
Ah yes, once again, rich Americans spend money to keep the poor ignorant. How noble of them.
-
1 RespuestaDamn you Big Junk Food! On a side note, I don't know if it is still that way, but it used to be that a Big Mac was the most bang for your buck nutritionally.
-
I want both a ban on food stamps and restrictions on expensive food, such as organic food. I shouldn't have to subsidize the poor eating shit, and I shouldn't have to subsidize the poor feeding themselves great food. It's enough that they get to live off of my money.
-
It's pathetic how lobbyists are allowed to influence politics.
-
They should be forced to buy healthier food (at the same price) because by living off of food stamps, they're sucking up taxpayer money. If they then use those stamps to buy horribly unhealthy foods, they're training taxpayer money for their medical bills.

Editado por cxkxr: 12/4/2013 1:17:04 AMWell junk food is considerably cheaper... And freedom of choice isn't a bad thing... so..
-
It depends on what is considered 'junk food'.

10 RespuestasEditado por asir: 12/3/2013 6:13:14 AMFast food / junk food is cheap and full of calories. When you're so poor you have to be on food stamps, it's not like you're going to be eating a healthy dinner full of fruits and veggies. You're going to be rationing that bitch out so you don't starve at the end of the month.
-
If they prevent you from buying junkfood on foodstamps, they better raise the amount of foodstamps you can get per month. Eating healthy is VERY expensive. Buying junk is cheap as hell, and very filling.
-
Because the large food manufactures have tremendous pull in Congress. Sadly, the junk food is also cheap and high in calories. So...

I am currently eating Munchies.
-
Mountain Dew and Doritos (along with other companies) are not going to allow that to happen.
-
And as a guy who's fairly fiscally conservative, I would fully support something like this. If you're going to be on food stamps, you should only be aloud to buy things you actually need to survive, not a bunch Doritos on Mountain Dew.
