Abandonment

A very smart guy once posted a thread talking about how the ideal of (political) abandonment seems to be occurring with B.net. He compares it how politicians never campaign in areas they know they already have votes locked in. Or how you don't fight for territory you already control. It seems that this is very true with regards to how Destiny is getting introduced and talked about. This has been happening for a very long time, so please don't mistake this thread for one of nostalgia about the "old days". And it's not exclusive to just Destiny. Prior to Deej's upgrade, news on B.net was pretty stagnant. The "Community" guys are active in the community, it's just that the community now no longer is B.net. And it hasn't been B.net for pretty much as long as I can imagine. Actually, if you want to know anything new and exciting about the Destiny/Bungie universe, B.net is probably the last place you should check. Now, I'm not slighting any of the people that got an advanced look at Destiny. Louis Wu as far as I'm concerned is a giant among mortals especially in what he's brought to the table in regards to the Bungie community. I'm not upset that other people from around the Bungie nation got selected to be given some hands on time with the game. KP, G4's Mr. Sark, and the guys from TTL have all done a lot for the greater Bungie community. However, they are all separate from B.net. This is what got me thinking about how Bungie.net seems to be the last place that is considered "community". While maybe once upon a time the Seventh Column started here, I really don't think it's been here for a long time. The better members of the community have long since left because they can't stand B.net or the majority of its denizens. Now I'm not one to tell other people how to run their own IP. I'm curious as to why no one (not even the moderators) from B.net were considered to get the preview and talk about it. Why is it that the only places I see employees talking about Destiny is on other websites other then B.net? I know more about Destiny by reading things on TTL's Blog, HBO's front page, and GAF, then anything I've seen discussed on B.net. Urk in one of his rare appearances in this forum talked about how he lamented the fact that they don't talk to people on B.net anymore. How he wanted to be able to have a smaller discussion with people (maybe in a private chapter or something similar) and be able to give people on B.net a better venue to have a decent discussion with them. I was excited. I honestly got my hopes up and I guess it's no fault but my own because I'm disappointed it never came to fruition. So I guess what I'm saying is: Should I have abandoned B.net all those years ago and started my own little place in the community? Should I have joined up with TTL years ago instead of just recently? Why is Bungie's home no longer the home of it's community? -MM

  • I got upgraded? To what? This has been the only place where I've taken questions that the entire team is invited to answer. The Bungie Blog represents my largest efforts. We interview a member of our team almost once a week. Why do you feel abandoned? We might visit other houses in the community, but this is where we live. And TTL is for nerds.

    • Nice post. I am going to have to check out that othrr thread you referenced. I have always been a proponent of a "find it on b.net first" ideology. I too was a bit contorted to see how bungie interacted with the facebook community. But, as it comes down to it, I understand what Bungie is trying to accomplish. There will be social aspects to Destiny that will require utilize aspects of social networking sites. And without a strong fan base with those outlets, it could be difficult for Destiny succeed in those areas. I trust in what Bungie attempting, and I believe that they would never truly turn their backs on the b.net community. Once the campaigning is done, I'm sure Bungie will call b.net, information central..

      • Just wait until destiny comes out. People will start funneling back in. It's just because bungie doesn't have a game title out right now and the only ones that are here are either interested in destiny or are veterans of the community that love it here. You should always see bungie.net as your home. We are like a big crazy family.

      •
The better members of the community have long since left because they can't stand B.net or the majority of its denizens.
Then they aren't members of the community anymore, so why should I care? Yes the conversations and interactions are not as intimate, I haven't gotten a comment from an employee in at least a month, but that's just the season Bnet is in, there will be quiet times when Destiny gets a little stale, then things will perk back up again once the COMET DLC comes out. During those quiet times I think you'll see more of the quality members.

Achilles kinda hinted on this, but it is my theory as well. B.net is a catch all in terms of community. It needs to be something malleable so you can get people to come in, easily find people, and then find their own niche of the community they can fit into. That has been what it has always been about and what it most likely continue to be. While I do think eventually think that the main pull of the site will be game data specific (like Halo), the forums and community will still act in the same manner. I have a few ideas as to why you see information and discussions happening elsewhere. In the same context as the niche group comment above, it is so much easier to talk to a smaller group of people. Especially when you can sit down and see names that are recognizable. At the same time, getting mass media like a trailer out there wouldn't be very efficient using just this site. Look at their twitter account for example: over 230,000 people follow the Bungie account. in 140 characters, they just informed that many people plus several thousand more due to retweets from their followers. There is no way that many people regularly check any specific website for the latest information. Last, everything is so interconnected that you hear about new information regardless of where it is posted anymore. B.net is probably not the best place to disclose the latest information because it might not resonate enough anywhere else. To me, where or when the information is posted isn't important, it's what it is actually about. I may not get everything at once, but that is fine, I have enough on my plate that it wouldn't be possible for me to digest everything at once anyway. Also, I'm glad you're back among the living BB.

        • After Destiny ends and we have to wait for a new franchise, go around looking for groups of fans. Bungie.net will always be the core of Bungie Fans.

        • Lord. You could have at least linked to B.B.'s thread as your source. Oh and I will let you in on a little secret. Now this may have changed but B.net is supposed to be the first place you land. Then you go and find other communities that fit you better. If you decide to stay that is fine, but in reality you should be going out and meeting new people.
