I'm going to get right down to it.
Ever since Destiny was announced, Bungie has avoided attaching the MMO title to the game. Sure, they've say they've done this because of the "baggage" that comes with the term, such as subscriptions, microtransactions, and the like. But after reflecting on the whole thing, it's clear to me now: Bungie refuses to use the term MMO because IT'S NOT AN MMO!
Destiny is, first and foremost, an FPS. Bungie has said this more times than I can count. Normally when this phrase is uttered, it's followed by a qualification stating the game contains MMO and RPG elements. But just because the game has characteristics that show up in MMORPGs doesn't mean the game is one. Destiny may have loot, public spaces, customization, and other similar features. This doesn't mean the game will have the whole kit and caboodle you find in an MMORPG. Things like lotteries, player housing, pickpocketing, pets, marriage, or whatever goofy idea you saw in that one game that one time probably won't show up.
Here's a good rule of thumb: if, at first glance, the idea doesn't relate to a first person shooter, it might not belong in Destiny.
My reasons for creating this thread are a) to clear up the confusion about what Destiny is at its core, and b) to correct some of you who have unrealistic expectations for Destiny because you've fallen into the trap of picturing the game as a traditional MMORPG.

Editado por Stealthy Merc: 1/17/2016 6:50:34 AMIt's because Bungie is still learning from MMOs. For example, Destiny has you run Normal KF to progress to Hard KF, and that's it! That is all. A normal MMO you would progress from one raid to another to another newer raid not just difficulties. Something Bungie hasn't quite learned yet because they're too busy making Destiny 2 which will not have you fly from planet to planet like a game called No Mans Sky which was developed by 3 people as opposed to a whole team.

Seeing a lot less ridiculous ideas as of late.

6 RespuestasBungie doesn't use the term "MMO" because of people like this.

4 RespuestasNo one knows what Destiny will be but Bungie and to be honest people are excited about this game because we are expecting something new and different. The people who are excited about MMO elements like those kind of games, who are you to tell people what to like or what to look forward to when in fact you don't know what to expect. Everyone knows this is a FPS because Bungie fans know what Bungie is good at and what they like to do but let's be honest here Bungie is trying to break a mold and give us gamers something amazing and different and if anyone can do this its Bungie. We all know this is not an MMO, it's going to be something different but you also can't sustain us gamers with a FPS for 10 years. Lets just see what Destiny will become. Now bring on BUNGIE DAY!!!!!

2 RespuestasEditado por Citrus raptor: 7/1/2013 10:52:32 PMBut why should we allow the past MMO games to taint the three little words: Massive Multiplayer Online, just because of their styles and trends? And even if I do understand why Bungie is avoiding the acronym, I don't understand why logical minds should submit to the general concensus of what the genre has come to be identified with.

Honestly, I have no expectations for Destiny. Only excitement at what Bungie will tell us next. It really doesn't make a difference to me if I can own a house in-game or not. Yeah it would be cool but it definitely isn't required in what this game primarily is, an FPS. Destiny is Destiny because it is so unlike other games, and that's what makes it beautiful.

It's a SWFPSRPG :D

1 RespuestaDestiny is Destiny. Done. No need to label it. All that matters is it will be awesome.

6 RespuestasEditado por Vischu: 7/2/2013 4:00:55 PMTo me it seems to be an FPS RPG, much like Bordrlands and Borderlands 2. Borderlands also had Co-op features but they did not focus on it as much as Bungie seem to be doing with Destiny. I really don't think it is wrong to compare the two games, but comparing details is for a later time. For now we can compare the general feeling and vibe of the game, also core gameplay from the 2 FPS RPG's. I know Bungie calls it a "Mythic Sci-Fi" and I'm sure it is one but for now I don't understand how. So I'm sticking to FPS RPG.

8 RespuestasI like to think of Destiny as a SWS- Shared World Shooter, which is a term that I think Bungie has thrown out there before. Other upcoming games that can be considered SWS's are The Crew, Watch Dogs and The Division.
-
Destiny will be an Fun Shooter, that's what Bungie does... Marathon, Oni, Halo
-
1 RespuestaDestiny may not be an MMO, but it sure as hell is what an MMO should be.
-
Destiny- a game where you and your friends mug aliens. Is that so hard to understand?
-
3 Respuestasanyone remember Phantasystar? Kinda reminds me of it in jus the aspect of the public places and meeting with people to go out on missions.
-
1 RespuestaI think Destiny will become its own hybrid genre, taking cues from multiple different genres. So to say that it is purely RPG, FPS or MMO is quite ridiculous because it takes aspects from all 3 of them. I think the reason that Bungie is labeling it as an FPS is because the campaign will likely be FPS, but the online portion can still be much different from it.
-
1 RespuestaI think the biggest reason they want to avoid that is the "massive" part of it. Sure the world size looks to be quite massive with the different places to explore but the player count isn't looking to be. The big public event that took place during the demo had all of 7 people in it. They said there'd be more but I'm guessing there probably won't ever be 20 or so players on the screen at the same time even for competitive. Save for perhaps the city hub would be my guess.
-
It's an FPSRPG type mythic syfy game.
-
There's a specific number or higher of players that must be online in a persistent world, on the same server in other games although it doesn't matter how it's done as long as they are, and it's a significant number which destiny doesn't meet or exceed and that's why destiny is not an MMO.
-
2 RespuestasWhat I want to know is: will I be able to explore at my own will? Will I be able to leave the tower, but not through a mission, just leave into the wilderness?
-
I agree with you but I dont like the Braves

2 RespuestasMMO... Massively Multiplayer Online. Really not trying to say that you are wrong or anything. But technically that is a part of what Destiny is. There will not be any offline mode to this game, so that shows the Online part. Massive, in that they said this game will be huge, so many areas to explore. So many worlds for that matter! Then we go to multiplayer, sure there are private areas where you could stay away from people, but then there are the public events. You are also able to set a setting in which says you want to be grouped with other players instead of playing solo. So you could just be out in the world and then meet someone around the corner. So in reality this game is an MMO, and it is only in your opinion that you would like it not to be an MMO. Which in my opinion I wonder why? There are so many great aspects of being an MMO, which destiny has already showed us a great deal of them. :)
-
I think it's because they don't see it as an MMO. We'll just have to wait and see for ourselves. I'm very excited for this game.
-
if ppl wanna dream or post threads about it being an mmorpg and what they would like to see in game etc, let them, for when destiny comes out they'll know if it is or if its not.
-
Because an MMO has certain aspects that Destiny will not and vice versa
-
3 RespuestasI think a lot I of people are going to be disappointed because they were expecting an mmo. I think it's is going to be a lot like halo but with player customization.
