Will Destiny Have a Traditional Leveling System?

So today i decided to watch the Pathways Out of Darkness Vidoc due to a bit of spare time I had. While they were showing off the functionality of the mobile app I stopped the video during the highlight of Halcylon's character Outfit. I noticed the numbers in the top left side of the screen and asked myself, "What do those numbers stand for?". I've seen a few scraps of speculation on the forums, but the only one that actually stuck to me was Hylebos's theory that the number could possibly be an elo rating.
A player's Elo rating is represented by a number, which increases or decreases based upon the outcome of games between rated players. After every game, the winning player takes points from the losing one. The total number of points gained or lost after a game is determined by the difference between the ratings of the winner and loser.
Above is a short example of the elo system in action. Now the thing that stuck with me wasn't the possibility of it being an elo system, but rather that it was a rating of the equipment the character had as a whole. This led me to think,"What if there isn't a "Leveling System" in Destiny?" What if progression isn't restricted to levels but rather based solely on the ability of your armor to keep you alive. How can I properly express how i see this? I remember in a mailsack a bungie employee talked about meeting a pack of enemies that were so strong that he was killed relentlessly and had no other choice but to run and seek refuge. This could be a prime example of his equipment not meeting requirements. A big problem i have with this theory however is with the four base stats on the bottom of the picture. Those numbers don't seem like they would be static throughout your entire playthrough. This means that there would need to be some way to enhance these stats in order to progress. Now obviously the first idea would be that the gear you acquire would give additional stats like a Tyrannian Pulse Rifle would give +4 Disciple and +2 Shields. There is also the chance that there is a traditional leveling system, and with each additional level acquired you are given points to allocate where you wish. This honestly does sound like a bit of an ideal situation, but it also seems to be a bit restrictive for this adventurous open world we have been told so little about since you wouldn't be able to explore and see what you want to see as a new character due to the face that anything and everything could kill you. This is of course just speculation and I would love to hear your feedback especially if you have a dissenting opinion. -Be Brave

    • I personally don't want the enemies to have levels. It wouldn't create an environment where players who spend different amounts of time playing could play together. Also player leveling usually means patches and content updates periodically. Regular maintenances. I just want the expansion every year. If my friends wants to go to Pluto to fight in the barren wastelands hunting fallen and he's been playing for weeks. I want to jump in and be able to play with my friend having only like 10 hours clocked on the game. Also player levels mean grinding gear. I play a few mmos and i can tell you. Grinding gear sucks sometimes. If I want gear or costumes, I just want to round up my friends and head out right then. I don't want to have to level to be able o get to the area it's in, then possibly level some more to wear. I would rather a credit system by doing missions. To upgrade my guns and tweak them so it never seems pointless to do so. And enemy shouldn't have levels. Encounters should just be arranged differently for difficulty. Enemies have vehicles(tanks, hover bikes, ect), weapons, classes, and their own environment. They can make it pretty hard if they need too. I don't want a new player to feel useless if he goes to a difficult area with my friends and me. Enemy levels can act as deterrents. If you want to advocate that a enemy is tougher than normal, or enemies in this area are tougher than normal, make the look tougher. These are the guys that made halo people. There were never any levels in halo, and it still was able to keep new inexperienced and old experienced players satisfied for years. This is the same thing, just on a larger scale.

    • In all honesty i think yes. So youll be able to level up. Your Enemies and Other Players may have lvl. Indicators above there heads so u can see if your fighting a for example lvl 32 cabal. I think that would be really cool.
