Destiny is described as being very social at its core. This is probably one of the most intriguing things destiny has promised.
We know this is not an MMO (not in the traditional sense at least). Typical MMOs go the route of having text based communication.
As this is a console focused game, I assume voice chat will take precedence.
How do you guys expect that to work? We have been told that there are many situations in Destiny where players dynamically join other players world as their current story based objectives align. Players may dynamically encounter other players, help and interact with them as well. I'm not sure about you guys, but depending on the atmosphere of this game, that sounds phenomenal.
But I imagine it would break immersion to simply have players "connect" to an 'instance' or zone and immediately gain vocal communication. There would be no 'surprise' when the person dashes to assist you if this was the case.
It would be incredible if destiny utilized some form Proximity Voice. Only players within a certain range are capable of hearing you. This is underused in the vast majority of PC MMOS, but is used well in games such as the ARMA ll mod, Day Z.
I assume members of the same squad will remain in vocal communication regardless of their position in the zone. It would be nice if we had a choice in settings. What if I want the communication between my squad to be audible to all players? What if I want it to be limited to just those in my squad (sort of like party chat)?
Would proximity voice between random random players be a good thing to you guys?
What of Squad's chat and the available options?
TL;DR Do you think proximity voice is a good thing for Destiny?

1 RespuestaThere should be proximity voice, but ... It should appear as a notification (a list of available nearby squads/teams), and a squad/team can have the option to: - ask for assistance - ignore other team frequency I believe this would satisfy many people and create that immersion feel of the future.
-
Proximity voice would be perfect,of course the option to mute would be a necessity. Like several people below have mentioned, it would be nice if the player's voice was not as loud/muffled if you were further away.

2 RespuestasProximity voice is an outstanding idea and I think that in a large open-ish world that Destiny will be a great system to manage the biggest issues that a large overwhelming number of voices screaming in your ear from everyone playing across a planet could bring. What I would love to see is a management system similar to what we used in the military for large scale engagements and coordination of units where there are essentially based on how you enter a firefight. Example you have 10 guys in your party when you drop on Venus to take down an enemy outpost, and suddenly when you hit the dirt there are an additional 80 people spread out over 8 other parties. I think the proximity chat should automatically take the party leaders and put them into roles as as sergeants (or squad leaders), and have some system that essentially asks for volunteers in the commander role (put in incentives in place for extra XP, or $ bonuses or something like that for people who are effective commadners). That commander on the ground then can talk with all 8 squad leaders, and they can pass along commands, and set micro objectives within the framework of the commanders major objectives. I also think it would be cool that even if someone isn't a commander, another frequency that is a direct line to the commander based on what they are doing for example tank commanders or a drop ship pilot has the option to scroll between tactical frequencies or anytime someone is in some sort of special role it automatically gives them a a special channel. Example: The Commander knows that a drop ship pilot has 10 troops on board and needs those troops dropped off at the South West corner of a compound, he flips to his pilot channel, and asks for the insert, and once the pilot lifts off and goes back into an orbit with his door gunner or sniper to provide intel and covering fire to the troops on the ground. Now the pilot has the option to talk with the commander, anyone who hops on his ship as crew, or he can flip back into squat chat and talk directly to his squad leader. I just think a certain level of customization in regards to communication provides a 3D battlefield, and I realize this requires quite a bit more effort but this system only is more work for people who want the responsibility, and at the basic level party leaders aren't anything new. I just think for a game to be truly cooperative a slightly more dynamic communication system needs to be implemented and Proximity Voice is a perfect large vision for that, while some kind of tier based, info-centric, comm system would make the game so much more fun.

3 RespuestasI just realized. There will come a day when I get saved by an awesome looking Exo Titan, then he'll speak, and I'll realize he's ten years old and I will be forever ashamed.

I operate with my friends as a team. The last thing I want is a screamer to come by and start F*cking around. I like to soak up the objective and environment and interaction. I don't want some screamer who has no taste or sense of the epic to suddenly interrupt our voyage and adventure and ruin my experience by jumping to conclusions, cheating the game, and generally ruining the purpose of these missions in general (to capture awe and experience epicosity at its greatest). I would rather have the option to NOT let one of these people interfere with my private "operations." Also, another valuable contribution to the game would be, although I don't know how they plan on working the deaths and responds, that if you die you respawn at the city under the Traveler. This would increase the pressure of not dying because it would take forever to get back to where you left off, but also, it would help with the screamer problem. If a screamer were to approach my team in the middle of a mission I will politely request that they take their unwelcomed business elsewhere and leave. If they refuse I will initiate and execute Code: Screamer and force peace upon their restless soul. In doing so they shall respawn back at the city hopefully giving me and my team enough time to make significant progress before they, if they dare, return again. :) (I love it when I win!)

Yes, this not only would be great I think it is a necessity. Also, if they utilized surround sound this would be phenomenal. Imagine someone calling out to you from the left and you hear them on that side so you don't have to guess where they are coming from, it sure would add immersion which is seemingly one the principles this game is based around. Of course they would need an option to turn it off or on, same with just proximity voice in general, always needs more options.
-
Since Party Chat on XBL? Nope. I don't expect to hear anybody. I think we all know the only viable form of communication left.
-
Absolutely. However, to avoid the possibility of incredibly annoying people ruining an environment, they need to have something in place to allow players to choose what they subject themselves to. One possibility is to allow players to select a "hear all" button which opens proximity chat entirely. They could also choose "invite only" that would take a simple request between players to speak to each other, and could be easily muted if necessary.
-
1 RespuestaProximity voice would likely get annoying as all hell. There could be so many people that it just sounds like chaos, or, more likely, you'll have the obnoxious people that are already on multiplayer games, except you'll have more of them, and it'll be more of a hassle to mute them.

4 RespuestasProximity voice adds a feeling of realism to the game. Voice communications always does. Especially since this game is placed in the future where there will obviously be an advanced communications network. Here are a few voice chat channels that might be helpful and make things run more efficiently. Global Channel: It's kind of like a all-hailing communications network, where you can call for assistance to a certain range(lets give it 50 planetary miles range, just a random number, it would be too complicated and get overused and crowded if it could broadcast over the entire planet) Direct Communication(Proximity Voice in a way): You can communicate to any soldier within 50-100 meters off you, so you can coordinate combat, fire maneuvers, trade, or just talk in general Group/Team/Unit Channel: Basically what it's name means, you invite players to your Group or Team or Unit and be able to communicate with them, this will help keep other comm channels clear for more important information Ship/Transport Communication Channel: Well this idea is a fun one... We know in the future you will have all terrain vehicles such as ships, hover-cars, hover-bikes, armored trucks, etc... Maybe in the game your friends, group, unit, or team can travel in your transport vehicle together to get to locations well then maybe there can be like a interactive button that syncs(hooks you up to the vehicles communications) your player to that vehicles unique communications channel so you can leave a player behind as a pilot and you can call for extract or pick up without all the comms interference. Have some fun throw some variables into the whole communications thing. Like, when players enter a certain area their comms get scrambled due to weather conditions and they can only use like Direct Communication(Proximity Voice) or the enemy jams the player comms and you can't use Global Channel or Vehicle/Transport Communications Channel to request back up. This would make the game a lot more intriguing to players and be more realistic on the playing field. Just another fun thought, I heard a discussion on a map for the game that the player could use, add grid coordinates on the map to make moving to locations a lot easier for groups of players. These are just some ideas that might help or just get the mind creativity juices flowing. Feel free to judge and play off of them. I appreciate your time and effort.

Proximity voice is a great solution to the question of how to allow communication between players. However, there could be terminals in cities or staging areas that allow players to contact others across vast distances. Players could broadcast their locations or could release distress calls to these terminals that allow players waiting for some sign of action to receive the broadcast and reply and deploy (and by this I mean run or drive) to the origin of the signal to join the fight. Of course, distress call broadcasts that get picked up by the terminals could also have a range where players within a certain radius could receive coordinates and decide whether or not to help.
-
Proximity could be utilized very well for destiny, here's why. Firstly, you can call out for help if you are engaged in a fight that you may not be able to handle, and should fortune ring true, someone will come to help.Voice is important for interaction on consoles because you can't really type in a chat bar. Non-Proximity voice would cause such a great deal of pollution that you would never be able to hear yourself think. Halo 2 already capitalized on this beautifully. The further you were away from the person who was talking, the quieter their voice was. However you should have the option to turn this off at any time, and turn on party chat, so that even if the members of your party are on the other side of the solar system, you can still hear them as well as if they were standing next to you. Because interaction and communication are so vital, I feel you should be able to hear the voices on proximity even if your headset is disconnected.
-
It would be cool to have the proximity voice setup like in Halo 2, allowing you to always talk to your team/squad but allow to hear other people. The only places this would get annoying would be in the social areas where there will be tons and tons of people.
-
1 RespuestaI think the real question is should party chat be banned. You know everyone you come across is going to be in it. I always assumed Destiny would use proximity voice. I think people in your squad/team/whatever should always hear you (basically an in game party chat) but when other people are near (I mean really close. Think Halo 2.) you should hear them too (which is why party chat should be banned).
-
3 Respuestasi think they will do proximity but squad can speak to one another regardless of distance. that would be best for a MMO on the xbox and ps3-4
-
Proximity voice chatting would be cool.
-
Destiny should have the options of EITHER squad, all friendly allied players in area, or entire team/outfit/faction (the last for tactical functions such a telling a certain squad where to next). Also, while those are choices that can be switched between, I think proximity chat should be a toggle. You can have, for instance, squad and proximity chat engaged, or squad chat only engaged, or proximity and faction, or just faction, or local friendlies and proximity, or just local friendlies, or just proximity (last for that real authentic/realistic play experience) Or, you could just deselect all voice communication. And this system should be purely inside of Destiny, maybe even Destiny could force players out of parties, etc?
-
Motion for Halo 2 voice masking.
-
Wait for it... Voice filters! Why hasn't anyone mentioned this yet? Say you hate your nerd voice and want your avatar to sound more like Solid Snake. It's probably not practical, because of processing needs and voice lag during urgent moments, but it's still a cool idea.
-
1 RespuestaProximity voice would be a very cool addition to Destiny. I would, however, like to be able to adjust my voice/party chat settings etc. in game. For example I would be able to choose between: proximity voice, being only able to communicate with my squad if we're playing as no-good-bandits or to mute everybody as I'm a lonely wolf. :-)
-
Proximity chat would have to be the way to go. What would be cool is a way to change the volume of people based on their distance or if behind a wall or something. Then as others suggested have an option to link to a radio channel that would be constant volume for tactical communications, but would be confined to the planet. Having it system-wide might be a little too unrealistic considering the distances between planets, but there should still be some way to send messages to other friends so that you could meet somewhere.
-
Yes, but I also excited to see what they do with gestures or whatever it is they said they are implementing

4 RespuestasThe MMOFPS Planetside 2 has this. They've essentially got different audio channels. Squad (group), Outfit (guild), Platoon (raid), and Proximity. That way you can talk to people on your faction, regardless of whether you're grouped with them or not. This does create problems. (People driving the bus-like vehicle playing the Ice-Cream truck song, or the small tank playing Low rider, etc.), but in PS2 it's fairly easy to mute people. In your options menu, there is a local chat list, and you can just click the mute next to the person's name, or you can point at then, hold the spot key, and it pops up a menu that you can select mute there.
-
5 RespuestasPS4 comes with headset as standard. That should help too

1 RespuestaJust so long as I can turn it off.
