What are your thoughts on the morality/legality of the following issues:
1. I own the Game of Thrones books (A Song of Fire and Ice series). Sometimes, I don't want to have to lug a book around. I'd rather be able to just read them from my phone/tablet. I go online, and download the ebooks, without paying of course. I use them only for my own benefit, and I do not share them with friends/family.
2. I love Fallout 3. Played for multiple hundreds of hours on my 360. I want to check out some mods, and various other options that the PC version allows. I download Fallout 3 for PC, without paying of course, and proceed to play through the entire game.
Thoughts on these? Is it illegal or wrong for someone to do either of these? If so, why?

8 RespuestasPiracy is only excusable in a couple scenarios: 1 - the title is long out of print, and you've taken reasonable measures to obtain it legally. 2 - the title is not sold in your country, and you've taken reasonable measures to obtain it legally. Anything else, and you're being a cheap bastard.

both of those things are illegal. neither of them though am i morally against; so long as the only person who benefits is yourself and/or you aren't monetarily profiting from it.

If you have already paid for them then I don't think there are any ethical concerns.

Regardless of whether it's legal you're not going to get caught for something so small. So you can essentially do whatever you want.

5 RespuestasIt's illegal to download something for free if whoever owns the rights to it doesn't make it free. It doesn't matter what other versions of the product you have or what you're using it for.

4 Respuestas1: Perfectly fine. I think the same way when I emulate games. I pretty much only emulate ones I own. 2: I'm leaning on the side of saying it's morally ok, but since it is a completely different product, I'm not sure. Then again, so are the books, but this just seems different.

I personally don't see an issue with pirating an eBook or game that you already own. I'm of the belief that purchasing a physical copy of a book ought to provide the benefit of a free or discounted eBook download.

11 RespuestasOK, on both, you are violating the law, and should be treated as a criminal. What you failed, rather spectacularly, to understand is that when you buy either the book or a game disk that you do not own what is in or on that medium. You have purchased a license to interact with that medium as defined in the EULA or copyright. For a book you have to look in the first few pages, for a game read the eula. Its listed right there. Just because you didn't share it with anyone else does not mean you have the right to it. Its stolen property. If you rob a bank and just pile the money in your room to stare at, not spend, its no less stolen and no less illegal. Even if the government could just reprint the money you stole...

Buying something like a game or book only allows you to play ONE copy of the book or game, not the right to as many copies as you want on different platforms. Why didn't you just buy the ebook for the GoT books from the start? ebooks are like $5-10 max and you can read them anywhere

If so, why?[/quote] This on the other hand is piracy, as the PC version is not the same as the console version and is in effect an entirely different product. I have a feeling both would be considered illegal though.
